It gives you a 360º view of those spy agencies you only read about or see in a movie or TV show. With one chapter per agency, you can read only chapters you may be interested in. The life of most spies is not as glamorous as it is made out to be. You may think it is all about high-tech and guns and car chases and ‘hot’ women, but that’s not the case. In the real spy world, the techniques boil down to the interpretation of basic human psychology. Just as there are four bases naturally found in DNA, the existence of additional bases is not ignored, nor amino acids in addition to the usual complement of 20. Can there be more than "64" possible codons? RNA is examined from the point of view of Nussinov plots. All information is presented from the point of view of regular, context-free, and context sensitive languages, as well as Turing machines and Sequential Machines (and their corresponding semi-groups). Relationships to other subjects of mathematics such as Complex numbers, Quaternions, Algebraic-Topology, and Knot Theory are also mentioned. An examination is made of Splicing Systems as well as Dominoes. Shortcomings illustrating the dangers of mathematical abstractions that ignore biochemistry are pointed out. The papers examine the subjects of interest from the point of view of applying language theory to search for new results, but also as biological-automatons (implementations or machines) to do calculations. This book will be of value to those studying Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Computer-Science, Mathematical Linguistics, and Biology, as well as Pharmacology (with the possible promise of medically active artificial DNA, RNA, and proteins). The new current was promising, and Dharma Kumar, historian and editor of the famous Indian Economic and Social History Review, decided to publish a journal, along the lines of Granta and The New Yorker, dedicated to ferreting out the best literary talent. The journal, Civil Lines: New Writing from India, first appeared in 1994 and quickly attracted attention by publishing literary pieces that were a cut above, developing a cult following among readers of Indian writing in English. Till 2001, five issues had been published—totaling sixty-one individual contributions by thirty-eight contributors. Some of the contributors were then far from well known, and Civil Lines could be said to have given them a leg-up towards subsequent fame. Sheila Dhar, Susan Visvanathan, Raj Kamal Jha, Ruchir Joshi, Siddhartha Deb, Suketu Mehta, Amitava Kumar and Manjula Padmanabhan went on to become established writers after Civil Lines had published their smaller pieces. Ramachandra Guha’s first brilliant essay—a five-finger exercise in literary anthropology which seems with hindsight to presage his later work on Verrier Elwin—appeared in the inaugural issue. A little-known aspect of Amitav Ghosh is his interest in the short story. When the aircraft started deviating from its scheduled route, there was panic at the IGIA air traffic control tower. By 9:15 am IST, the aircraft was seen heading south, when it became out of range of the radars at IGIA. Had the PM’s aircraft been hijacked? Was it headed to Sri Lanka or the Maldives? The defence minister, external affairs minister and the NSA had accompanied the PM to Islamabad. In their absence, the best men to contact the Indian Air Force Chief were the cabinet secretary or the defence secretary. Both men tried to get hold of him, but to no avail. He was not answering his office or mobile phone. They tried the Vice Chief and got no response either. What in hell was going on? By 9:45 am IST, Indian Army soldiers in battle gear began arriving in army trucks at North and South Block, and at various other ministry buildings spread across Lutyens’ Delhi. Hundreds of soldiers also arrived at the residences of the union ministers in the 28.7 km2 Lutyens Bungalow Zone. At 9:45 pm Pakistan Time, about five hours after the Indian generals had finished the press conference in New Delhi and about two hours after millions had started demonstrating on roads across fifty-plus Indian cities, Prime Minister Irfan Khan chaired a meeting of Pakistan’s National Security Council. A plan of action was framed.
