Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steps that lead to the production of oil and gas are diverse, complex and costly. They are diverse because the detection of oil and gas involves input from many specialties, ranging from geology to reservoir engineering. They are complex, as shown by the development of the job of the petroleum architect, who coordinates all the operations. They are costly, as the investments for exploration and production represent more than half of all investments in the oil and gas sector. Moreover, exploration is a risky activity, both from the technical and financial viewpoint: only one well in five produces marketable oil. Meanwhile, the areas for exploration and production are spread throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written and edited by experts and academics already active in the oil and gas industry, and addresses students and practitioners alike. It aims to familiarize them with salient features of oil and gas service contracts. The book provides a concise description and, to a lesser extent, analysis of the main features of service contracts of the types commonly used in the oil and gas industry. Writers and editors come from different legal traditions and practice in different jurisdictions, including UK, Iran, Brazil and Mexico. Service contracts are as broad as their name suggests, comprising a wide array of contracts. However, a clear distinction exists between contracts where one party to the contract is a sovereign state or neither is. This has been the basis for organizing the present book in two parts.

The first edition of this book has been selected for inclusion in Choice’s annual Outstanding Academic titles list. It has been rewarded for its excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of its contribution to the field, and its value as important treatment of the subject. The steps that lead to the production of oil and gas are diverse, complex and costly. This book provides a complete overview of the stakes and challenges involved in oil and gas exploration and production. Following a historical review and a survey of the markets, the technical phases are covered, as are the evaluation of reserves, the estimation of investments and costs, the decision-making and control processes, and the accounting, legal and contractual environment for these activities. The book concludes with a discussion of the role of safety, and of environmental and ethical issues. This work, which is designed for readers concerned with the various aspects of the oil and gas upstream sector, is accessible to all. This second edition takes into account the huge changes in the oil and gas industry, particularly the large increases in oil prices, investments and costs observed since the first edition. This book was released on 2014 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all oil and Gas in the world is developed through some form of contracts and for more than a century the petroleum contracts, as a basic legal tool, have played a crucial role between the contractual parties in the petroleum sector. The development of these sorts of contracts demonstrates the dynamic changes that have occurred in the petroleum industry. Relevant to the question of balancing the interests between the host state (HS) and the international oil company (IOC), this study examines the contractual measures that have been followed by the parties to create fair and adequate relationship, and also keep the contractual interests in a mutual and balanced manner. Furthermore, this study discusses the structure of the petroleum contracts with a special reference to the main terms of the KRG's Production Sharing Contracts. As a subsidiary concentration, the researcher also draws attention to the Kurdistan Region oil and gas law, the Iraqi constitutional approach of the region and the governorate's authority in striking oil and gas development contracts. This research applies a descriptive method to attain its objectives in its main discussions about the main features of the production sharing contracts in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the balance of interests between the host state and investor (IOC) under KRG's PSCs and the contractual mechanisms to guarantee the balance of interests between the host state and the investors in the KRG's PSC. Also this study shall seek the examination of the contractual relational outcome under the petroleum production contracts and their mechanisms. It will also take an analytical and critical assessment to evaluate the difficulties encountered in achieving fair interests for both parties. The current study's findings show that, the PSC is a suitable instrument for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to build up its domestic industry with the assistance of foreign oil companies. This research has also proven that these mechanisms are the main devices to encourage the parties to protect their interests and keep the balance of their relations during the life time of the contract. By adopting a range of mechanisms which are fair and flexible to both parties (HS & IOC) and adapted to any unpredictable changes that may take place with time, the KRG creates a reasonable environment for the International Oil Companies (IOC) to invest in its petroleum sector and keeps the parties' interest in a balanced manner. Hence, this study has shown that by introducing a flexible PSC and reasonable mechanisms, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has its own strategy for developing its petroleum sector and has established itself as an attractive region for foreign investment.
