Book excerpt: Ohio's Black soldiers have always been in the forefront of this nation's wars and the American Civil War is no exception. The state raised two infantry regiments for the United States Colored Troops during this war and then sent recruits to other regiments organizing in the South. Over 6,700 Black Ohioans served in this war and the names of many of these men have been lost until now. The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866 has the rosters for the two Black regiments and additionally, the names of 1,007 more men who were listed as being unassigned to a regiment for a total of 5,092 men. This roster simply states "no further record found" for these men. The author has researched each man using the Compiled Military Service Records of Colored Troops and he has been able to identify the regiments in which these other men were assigned. In the process he was also able to identify over 1,600 more Black Ohioans who are not listed in the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866. Besides listing the name of each soldier and his regiment, this book also lists the company, rank, age, birth place, enlistment and discharge information, and death and burial information if occurred during the war. The author was also able to identify a number of Blacks who served with Ohio's white volunteers both as combatants and non-combatants.

Book excerpt: The 27th United States Colored Troops consisted largely of Ohioans. They served in the Union Army from April 1864 to September 1865 in Virginia and North Carolina. These men who were already free before the war hoped that their participation would lead to increased rights in the northern states. The creation and success of the 166 black regiments during the Civil War served as contradictory evidence against the tenets of nineteenth-century ideals of white racial superiority. Black troops had confidence in their military accomplishments, therefore they believed that their manhood should be recognized as carrying the same birthright of political and social justice as white soldiers. The men of the 27th returned to Ohio after the war. They and their families optimistically sought full access to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and compensatory citizenship rights for their collective sacrifice. For the rest of their lives black veterans experienced both success and disappointment as they strived to obtain their due. In spite of Ohio's persistently discriminatory atmosphere, they contributed significantly to societal changes in northern communities during the postwar years. This dissertation expands the discussion of black wartime participation to include the postwar results of their involvement. It moves the conversation away from the debate over the degree of significance that can be attributed to black troops concerning Union victory or Confederate loss. Instead this project analyzes how the Civil War and African American participation affected post-bellum society. Specifically, how free Ohio blacks interpreted and understood their own participation in the Civil War. It also reveals how they and their families used their military service to negotiate an increased role in Ohio society and obtain the benefits of federal citizenship. Despite the white resistance to blacks obtaining their rights, African Americans who served in the 27th Regiment understood their role in helping to preserve the Union. Ultimately, they used their position as martial citizens to pursue personal gains. But they also gave the Ohio black community realistic hope of achieving equal status as American citizens through the tangible evidence provided by their receipt of pensions, GAR membership, and participation in Civil War commemorative activities.

Book excerpt: In the past two decades, historians have begun to focus attention on the story and struggle of the more than 186,000 African American men who served in the Civil War. While scholars have produced books such as Forged in Battle and Black Soldiers in Blue which have greatly advanced knowledge about the role of these men during the war, relatively little has been written about what happened to these men after they returned home. There are several noteworthy books about the post-war experiences of Union soldiers. However, none of them delve deeply into the topic of African American veterans. A notable exception to this pattern of scholarship is Donald Shaffer's book After the Glory. In this book, Shaffer gives the results of his research into the post-war experience of black veterans. His groundbreaking research compares African American veterans to white veterans and, to a lesser extent, to the African American population as a whole. The goal of "With Diplomas of Patriotism" is to see whether Shaffer's conclusion holds true in Ohio. Using Springfield as a case study, African American veterans were compared with white veterans and with African Americans who did not serve in the Civil War. The results were somewhat surprising.

What she was about to learn; however, was that her great grandfather's name would not be among those remembered there. Why not? Curtis and Gloria have written Ohio Confederate Connection together to help people better understand what really caused the Civil War (the War Between the States). This is your golden opportunity." - Frederick DouglassAfter the Battle of Fort Sumter made clear that there would be war between the North and South, support for both the Union and Confederacy rose. Two days after the surrender of the fort, President Abraham Lincoln issued a call-to-arms asking for 75,000 volunteers, a request that would rely on Northern states to organize and train their men. While most Americans had hoped to avert war, many abolitionists had come to view war as inevitable, and the news from Fort Sumter suggested a chance to rectify the country's original sin through the defeat of the South. Though abolitionists were a minority that was mostly confined to New England and often branded as radicals, they had long sought to end slavery and secure basic civil rights for blacks. One of the most famous abolitionists, the escaped slave Frederick Douglass, realized immediately what kind of opportunity the Civil War presented to all blacks, whether they were slaves or free: "Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letter, U.S., let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pocket, there is no power on earth that can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship."In 1861, Lincoln was particularly concerned about alienating the border slave states that had not joined the Confederacy, particularly Kentucky and Missouri. The fighting at Fort Sumter had already driven Virginia into the Confederacy, and Lincoln rightly worried that the conscription of black soldiers might alienate whites in the North and the border states. As he famously put it, "I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky." When Generals John C. Fr�mont and David Hunter issued proclamations emancipating slaves in their military regions and permitting them to sign up for active duty, the Lincoln Administration swiftly and sternly revoked their orders. Ultimately, and perhaps not surprisingly, the War Department would only change its tune once it felt that doing so was a military necessity. Most notably, even before Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the Union had organized its first black regiment; in July of 1862, General David Hunter, the same one whose emancipation order had caused a political crisis in 1861, impressed slaves in the South Carolina Sea Islands and enlisted them in the Union Army to deprive the Confederates of the ability to rely on them. While it was obviously a sensitive issue to emancipate slaves in border states, Lincoln clearly understood the military value gained by adding Southern slaves to the Union war effort, and it was a logical stepping stone from Hunter's actions to simply recruiting blacks to aid the North.In time, the addition of black soldiers would help turn the tide of the war, adding hundreds of thousands of soldiers to the ranks, and the U.S. Colored Troops would fight in some of the most famous battles of the war, including at Fort Wagner, Fort Pillow, and at the Battle of the Crater during the siege of Petersburg. While there continues to be controversy over the way Southern slaves were utilized by the Confederacy, it's unquestionable that freedmen and escaped slaves were crucial to lifting the North to victory from 1863-1865.The United States Colored Troops: The History and Legacy of the Black Soldiers Who Fought in the American Civil War traces the development of black regiments during the war and the impact they had on the second half of it.

Book excerpt: More than 5,000 North Carolina slaves escaped from their white owners to serve in the Union army during the Civil War. Richard Reid explores the stories of black soldiers from four regiments raised in North Carolina: the 35th, 36th, and 37th United States Colored Troops and the 14th United States Colored Heavy Artillery. Constructing a multidimensional portrait of these soldiers and their families, Reid provides a new understanding of the spectrum of black experience during and after the war. Reid examines the processes by which black men enlisted and were trained, the history of each regiment, the lives of the soldiers' families during the war, and the postwar experiences of the veterans and their families in an ex-Confederate state. The 35th and 36th Regiments fought well and earned praise from military leaders, while the 37th fought poorly, though its role in combat was limited by problems of organization, internal discord, and military inefficiency. The 14th fought no battles and won little recognition, making it more reflective of the experiences of the many black units that saw little combat and have received little scholarly attention. By considering four regiments from a single state, Reid is able to assess what experiences proved to be largely universal among black troops. The full freedom they fought for and dreamed of having when the war ended did not materialize in their lifetimes. But Reid shows that many of them found in the army a kind of equality that was denied them in civilian life. The postwar benefits afforded to white veterans seldom crossed the color line, and few black veterans were able to translate their military experience into public or political careers. The accolades African American soldiers received, Reid demonstrates, came not from a new southern society, but from within their own communities, where black soldiers were seen and recognized as heroes.
