Download or read book The Coloring Book written by Colin Quinn and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From former SNL "Weekend Update" host and legendary stand-up Colin Quinn comes a controversial and laugh-out-loud investigation into cultural and ethnic stereotypes. Colin Quinn has noticed a trend during his decades on the road-that Americans' increasing political correctness and sensitivity have forced us to tiptoe around the subjects of race and ethnicity altogether. Colin wants to know: What are we all so afraid of? Every ethnic group has differences, everyone brings something different to the table, and this diversity should be celebrated, not denied. So why has acknowledging these cultural differences become so taboo? In The Coloring Book, Colin, a native New Yorker, tackles this issue head-on while taking us on a trip through the insane melting pot of 1970s Brooklyn, the many, many dive bars of 1980s Manhattan, the comedy scene of the 1990s, and post-9/11 America. He mixes his incredibly candid and hilarious personal experiences with no-holds-barred observations to definitively decide, at least in his own mind, which stereotypes are funny, which stereotypes are based on truths, which have become totally distorted over time, and which are actually offensive to each group, and why. As it pokes holes in the tapestry of fear that has overtaken discussions about race, The Coloring Book serves as an antidote to our paralysis when it comes to laughing at ourselves . . . and others.

When he heard Genevieve was going to be on a three-day long party on a cruise ship, he jumped at the chance to reconnect with her. While he always had feelings for her, being best friends with her brother prevented him from acting on them. Now, he finds himself with a fresh new dilemma. He can write great music, but he can't talk to the one woman who makes his heart flip. Can he find the words to convince her to risk opening her heart to true love? Or will their chance at happiness pass like ships in the night?

Book excerpt: Vonnie Morrow is the last surviving member of her nuclear family except for her ninety year old mother Elizabeth. Vonnie has assumed full responsibility for the care and well being of this aging and very difficult woman. As the story begins, Vonnie enters the office of a middle-aged psychiatrist, Dr. Richard Koontz. She seeks help with the anxiety attacks that are being triggered by her dealings with her mother. The reader sees Vonnies childhood through flashbacks that give us a glimpse of the home she grew up in and her reasons for psychological difficulties now. Dr. Koontz himself is also dealing with the issues of aging and elder care. His father is showing signs of Alzheimers Disease. Dr. Koontz and his brother must come up with a plan to care for him even though he resists. Dr. Koontz himself is beginning to doubt his professional and personal choices in life. He wonders if a dramatic career and lifestyle change is warranted. Dr. Ed Wallace is Dr. Koontzs friend and mentor. As Dr. Wallace faces imminent retirement, he is faced with this alone. For all his wealth and social connections, Ed Wallace is a solitary widower and one who has developed some very poor coping mechanisms to deal with loneliness. The strand that holds the story together is Elizabeth, now in nursing home care. Vonnie struggles to overcome the influences of her past in order to function in the present. Doctors Koontz and Wallace seek to help her as does her husband Frank. Each individual must come to terms with the problems of aging for themselves and for those in their families. Aging Americans make up such a significant and growing part of our population. The theme of Assisted Living is a timely one. It is one that may strike a chord of truth for those readers who find themselves in the role of caretaker for aging relatives.

Book Synopsis Mrs. Morhard and the Boys by : Ruth Hanford Morhard
Download or read book Mrs. Morhard and the Boys written by Ruth Hanford Morhard and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loving biography of a dedicated mother in Cleveland, Ohio, who started America’s first boys’ baseball league during the Great Depression. At twelve years old, Josephine Morhard left her family's Pennsylvania farm to start a new life. After settling in Cleveland, she survived two bad marriages and became a single mother to two young children. When her spirited son started getting into trouble, she came up with a novel plan to give him the structure and sense of purpose he needed. Out of a dream, an empty lot, and the enthusiasm of other neighborhood kids, Josephine established the first boys’ baseball league in America. Beyond all expectations, the Cleveland Indians rallied behind her project. Future baseball legends Bob Feller, Jeff Heath, and Roy Weatherly helped hone the boys’ skills; renowned sports reporter Hal Lebovitz pitched in as an umpire; and they were even allowed to play in historic League Park. As Josephine’s Little Indians graduated into the Junior American and Junior National Leagues, and finally a Little World Series, she helped them develop strong values and a sense of accomplishment. Some of them, like Ray Lindquist and Jack Heinen, even made it to the Minor Leagues. Mrs. Morhard and the Boys tells the unforgettable story of her dedication and lasting legacy.
