Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Handbook of the Public Athletic League, Baltimore, MD The Public Athletic League is an outgrowth of the Public Parks Gymnasia, established in 1908 by Robert Garrett. Under his leadership, together with Theodore E. Straus, J. M. Cummings, and Theodore Kistler, the League was organized October 20, 1908. George W. Ehler, with a master hand, laid the foundation and started the building along the lines in which it is still grow ing in size and developing in function until its roof is covering the State of Maryland from the mountains of Allegany County to the sea of Worcester County. When Mr. Ehler withdrew to take up a new field of work at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. William Burdick came to the League and the later growth has been due largely to his skillful hand. In April, 1911, the Public Athletic League, in order to secure the advantages of closer co-opera tion with other social agencies and share the economic results of greater efficiency, became a part of the Social Service Corporation. This resulted in no real change in autonomy, but in an increase in efiectiveness. The State Legislature of 1912, through the efforts of State Senator William M. Maloy, appropriated to the public_ath]letic League to conduct athletics through out the State. Through the co-operation of Superintendent M. Bates Stephens, the State Board of Education and Superintendents, Albert S. Cook and Charles J. Koch, as well as the other leaders in education in the State, its activities are increasing rapidly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Handbook of the Academic Athletic League of California, 1910 We think that the circle of friends of clean athletics to - day is not only wide, but widening. From earliest times, thoughtful men have seen the interacting influence of mind upon matter, of body upon brain. Hence, they have long advocated the cultiva tion of the sound mind in the healthy frame. But, with the more recent rise and remarkable growth of crowded urban communities, in which the boy can no longer gain the muscular development that comes from performing the daily chores on the farm, and in which he is restrained from playing the old-fashioned games in the same old way, because the village green has given way to the paved thoroughfare, many new and vexatious problems in the sane regulation of athletics for the city youth have pressed forward for solution. It is equally true that even the problems that arise from the condi tions surrounding wholesome athletic activity in those parts out side the great cities, now appertain to organized groups, not, as formerly, to dissevered units. Hence, the wise solution of such grave matters would in itself be sufficient justification for the continued existence of such a body as the Academic Athletic League. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Punch the Bag Many forms of exercise are indulged in by folk desirous of improving their physical condition, but none of them is more attractive and at the same time more beneficial than bag punching. Here is a recreation, simple and inexpensive, awarding splendid means for the development of bodily powers, and indulgence in which, rewards with symmetry, grace and strength obtainable in no other way. Did you ever punch the bag? If so, you are well aware of the truth of the foregoing statements; if you never have tried this unsurpassed exercise, you have before you a pleasure as valuable as it is fascinating, and that is saying a great deal. One of the beauties of bag punching is that it may be indulged in by men, women and children alike; another is that the apparatus is thoroughly adapted to use in any home, no matter how small - even if the prospective enthusiast lives in a hall bedroom in a city apartment, or in an attic room in some antiquated farm house. As for the actual benefits to be derived from punching the bag - well, a book could be written on this subject alone. From the view point of the man who is lacking physically the exercise is nothing short of fondest imaginings of the idealist. Arms, Shoulders, hands, wrists, the neck, and legs are brought into play individually and in combination in bag punching. Aside from the development in these parts of the body, the shoulders are made square and upright, the chest is broadened, the eye quickened, and the brain stimulated. The circulation of the blood in all parts of the body is vastly improved. The direct result is a new being for the bag puncher. He goes into nature's storehouse and by tendering exercise in payment, receives a supply of health and vigor, just as he would enter a shop and purchase a new suit of clothes in return for "coin of the realm." This publication describes a leadership philosophy that speaks to who we are as Marines. It is about the relationship between the leader and the led. It is also about the bond between all Marines that is formed in the common forge of selfless service and shared hardships. It's in this forge where Marines are hardened like steel, and the undefinable spirit that forms the character of our Corps is born. It draws from shared experiences, hardships, and challenges in training and combat. Leading Marines is not meant to be read passively; as you read this publication, think about the material. You should reflect on, discuss, and apply the concepts presented in this publication. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of leaders at all levels to mentor and develop the next generation of Marine leaders.

This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Drillmaster of Valley Forge-Baron Von Steuben-correctly noted in his "Blue Book" how physical conditioning and health (which he found woefully missing when he joined Washington's camp) would always be directly linked to individual and unit discipline, courage in the fight, and victory on the battlefield. That remains true today. Even an amateur historian, choosing any study on the performance of units in combat, quickly discovers how the levels of conditioning and physical performance of Soldiers is directly proportional to success or failure in the field. In this monograph, Dr. Whitfield "Chip" East provides a pragmatic history of physical readiness training in our Army. He tells us we initially mirrored the professional Armies of Europe as they prepared their forces for war on the continent. Then he introduces us to some master trainers, and shows us how they initiated an American brand of physical conditioning when our forces were found lacking in the early wars of the last century. Finally, he shows us how we have and must incorporate science (even when there exists considerable debate!) to contribute to what we do-and how we do it-in shaping today's Army. Dr. East provides the history, the analysis, and the pragmatism, and all of it is geared to understanding how our Army has and must train Soldiers for the physical demands of combat. Our culture is becoming increasingly ''unfit," due to poor nutrition, a lack of adequate and formal exercise, and too much technology. Still, the Soldiers who come to our Army from our society will be asked to fight in increasingly complex and demanding conflicts, and they must be prepared through new, unique, and scientifically based techniques. So while Dr. East's monograph is a fascinating history, it is also a required call for all leaders to better understand the science and the art of physical preparation for the battlefield. It was and is important for us to get this area of training right, because getting it right means a better chance for success in combat.
