Book Synopsis Exposure Treatments for Anxiety Disorders by : Johan Rosqvist
Download or read book Exposure Treatments for Anxiety Disorders written by Johan Rosqvist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposure Treatments for Anxiety Disorders is a unique volume, as it draws together the latest research on the rapidly-expanding field of anxiety disorders and illuminates how to correctly apply the proven methodology of behavioral therapy techniques to the variety of situations that face today's mental health professional. That said, cognitive therapy has in the last 10 years gotten increased attention as an alternative to behavior therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. But while it is gaining acceptance among practitioners, cognitive therapy has yet to illustrate substantial benefits above those that behavior therapy can already provide. In light of the aforementioned, coupled with the pressure many practitioners feel from managed care paradigms and shrinking healthcare coverage, this book will be a welcome resource allowing for increased clarity of action, accountability, and ultimately, positive client outcome. Each chapter is designed to address pivotal aspects in the assessment, formulation and diagnosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders, to a sufficient depth that the generalist practitioner will be comfortable using this book as a guide when working with the anxiety disordered client.

The authors act on that belief by using relatable personal stories to communicate the concepts of psychological science (and the process of science itself), and by presenting important research in a clear not oversimplified way. Hockenbury and Nolan also take full advantage of online learning, creating activities in LaunchPad that have students thinking about psychology as scientists do. New co-author, Susan Nolan of Seton Hall University was recently designated a Master Teacher by the Society for Teaching Psychology. She regularly gives talks about incorporating scientific literacy into the introductory course and across the psychology curriculum.

Book Synopsis Family-Focused Treatment for Child and Adolescent Mental Health by : Paul A. Sunseri
Download or read book Family-Focused Treatment for Child and Adolescent Mental Health written by Paul A. Sunseri and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a treatment manual for using family-based treatments with children struggling with mental illness, supporting both family therapists and the families they are helping. Based on over 40 years of research, it has been shown that involving the entire family in treatment is effective. However, family therapy is still not used as a first line of treatment. Paul Sunseri explains and explores why family-based approaches should be used with struggling young people and how this can be applied in practice. Chapters discuss the causes, contributors, and social determinants for the rise in childhood mental illness and provide empirical evidence and treatments for working with children and adolescents suffering from self-harm, suicidal ideation, anxiety, anger, and depression. Filled with case studies throughout, the book also touches on mitigating the effects of screen time in our increasingly technological lives and interventions to help reluctant children participate in therapy. This book will be invaluable reading for graduate-level students, clinicians in training, and fully licensed clinicians, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and clinical social workers. The book is also a practical resource for parents and other caregivers; it pulls back the curtain on therapy and teaches parents exactly what to do to best love and support their child at a time when they need it the most.

Book Synopsis The Physiology of Psychological Disorders by : James G. Hollandsworth Jr.
Download or read book The Physiology of Psychological Disorders written by James G. Hollandsworth Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-01-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explanations of abnormal behavior that emphasize the importance of physiological determinants of disorder are relatively unpopular among psychologists, especially among those who work as clinicians in an ap~ plied setting. The reasons for this are theoretical and historical, as well as practical. Physiology and its associated biological disciplines of bio~ chemistry, pharmacology, and genetics are traditionally more associated with medicine; their use to underpin explanations and treatments of behavioral abnormality has consequently demanded knowledge to which most psychologists are not exposed and skills that are unavailable to them. The dichotomy thus created between medical and psychologi~ cal approaches has caused many psychologists to disregard physiologi~ cal factors. Even when the latter are recognized as important, many psychologists have been unwilling to admit to the fact, in the belief that by doing so they will commit themselves to an overly medical model of psychological disorder, undermining what they see as preferred views of abnormality. As I have become increasingly aware in following the progress of this book, in the United States the theoretical issues in this debate have been further sharpened by professional rivalries (present but less explicit on the European scene from which I write) between medical and nonmedical health care workers, regarding facilities for and approaches to the treatment of the mentally disturbed. Faced with these divisions of interest, psychologists have available two courses of action.
