Jack Devine, handsome, debonair antiques expert and New York jetsetter, is intrigued when he discovers that Yves Saint Laurent has paid a record sum at auction for a lacquer screen, 'Le Destin'. Who is this enigmatic Irish-born Eileen Gray, celebrated designer of 1920s Paris, now all but forgotten? Jack is astounded to discover that she is still alive, though in her nineties, and living a reclusive life in Paris. He determines to seek her out. Eileen's memory is awakened by Jack's probing, and she begins to relive her past, in all its glorious and painful detail - her artistic life, her passion for the modern age, her many affairs, her heartache at the hands Damia, the infamous singer. Wonderfully told, evoking the sights, sounds and characters of Paris in the roaring Twenties, Time and Destiny is an enthralling account of an extraordinary woman and time. And for Jack, as for Eileen, it is the beginning of a journey which uncovers hidden links to a past that neither could have imagined...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Thinking and Destiny, something new, although older than time, is now made known to the world--about Consciousness. The information is largely about the makeup of the human, where man comes from, what becomes of him; it explains what thinking is; it tells how a thought is created, and how thoughts are exteriorized into acts, objects and events, and how they make his destiny. Destiny is thus shown to be self-determined by thinking; and the process of re-existence and the after-death states are told in detail. A single reading of any one chapter of Thinking and Destiny brings rich rewards in new understanding of life`s puzzling mysteries. To read the entire book is to come nearer to knowledge of one`s destiny and how to shape it than is possible through study of anything previously written in the English language. Both the casually curious glancer at books and the most avid seeker for knowledge will be intrigued by the index, which lists more than 400 subjects in Thinking and Destiny, and by the fifteen chapter headings in the Table of Contents, which identify the 156 sections. The Foreword contains the only pages in which Mr. Percival uses the first personal pronoun. Here he relates some of the amazing experiences through which he was able to grasp the knowledge he transmits, and to acquire the ability to do so.

Book excerpt: Is time an endlessly repeating circle, or is it a descending path leading to decay and destruction? Is it a uniform stream, or is it made of tiny discrete parcels? Drawing from literature, biology, philosophy, psychology, and theology, this intriguing work explores each of these possible models and relates them to our own subjective impressions of time. Theoretical physicists are now striving to unlock the very structure of time itself. But the quest to understand time has never been the exclusive domain of science. From the Hindu notion of cosmic rebirth to Stephen Hawking's recent studies, philosophers and scientists alike have sought to answer time's riddle. Here is the first accessible, math-free introduction to the competing models of time that demonstrates how today's theories mirror ancient debates over the "shape" of time. This book explores such provocative concepts as synchronicity, time travel, black holes, and artificial intelligence. It probes the ultimate questions of science and philosophy, surveys the frontiers of theoretical physics, and finally, demonstrates how our own personal views on mortality must affect our choice of a scientific model of time.

Book excerpt: There has been much debate over the relationship of Heidegger's philosophy—in particular his book Being and Time—to his practical involvement with National Socialism. Yet the question has never been addressed through a comparison of Being and Time with other texts on history and politics written at the time. Johannes Fritsche does this, providing a detailed interpretation of the relevant passages in Being and Time—especially sections 72-77 on fate, community, and society. He analyzes for comparison two other authors who explicitly regarded themselves as rightists—Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf) and Max Scheler (Formalism in Ethics and other writings)—and two authors on the left—Georg Lukács (History and Class Consciousness) and Paul Tillich (The Socialist Decision). Fritsche concludes that Being and Time is a brilliant summary of right-wing politics in general, which proposes the destruction of liberal society in order to regenerate an idealized community. In addition, Heidegger rejects positions on the right, such as Scheler's, that enabled their authors to distance themselves from the most extreme political rightists, and thus he paves the way for National Socialism. Being and Time, Fritsche demonstrates, must be seen as a clear case for the National Socialists and their project of revitalization of the Volksgemeinschaft, the community of the people.

Book excerpt: 9 lectures, various cities, February 23, 1921-September 16, 1922 (CW 304) This is the first of two previously untranslated volumes of Steiner's public lectures on Waldorf education. Readers familiar with Steiner's lectures for teachers will discover here how Steiner presented his ideas to the general public with surprising directness. Teaching, Steiner says, should be artistic, creative, and improvisational--not dogmatic. Nonetheless, he is clear that "the great battle" has to do with the spiritual nature of children. He discusses themes such as understanding the role of health and illness in education, as well as the three major phases in child development: imitation, authority, and freedom. Also included are also two lectures Rudolf Steiner gave in England on Shakespeare and new ideals in education. With a little work, we can discover in the unfolding of our biography the traces of a marvelous, cosmic patterning -- the cycles of our life.In this fascinating book, Bryant argues that the seven-year cycle converts experience into psychological faculties; that the twelve-year cycle marks how self-awareness is translated into our life's work; and that the thirty-year cycle marks a major turning point in life. The Veiled Pulse of Time explores these cycles and discusses questions of freedom and destiny, transformation, reincarnation, and karma.
