Download or read book The MGA written by John Price Williams and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book is the definitive study of the MGA, for the author has gone back to factory records and to the people who worked on the car in the 'fifties, to find out how it was conceived, manufactured and marketed. Here is the real story of the MGA's engineering, body styling and every aspect of the car's development and production - including MG's strategy to beat its competitors. In seven years of production, there were major successes and sad disappointments. The MGA was the car that was "right first time" and though the Twin Cam variant was a nightmare for the factory, it is now the most sought after model. This book tells how the sleepy Thames-side village of Abingdon became a mass-production centre for the MGA, how the MGA became one of America's best-loved sports cars and how the MGA has become one of today's classic cars, cherished by enthusiastic owners all over the world.

Book Synopsis Daniel Gookin, 1612-1687 by : Frederick William Gookin
Download or read book Daniel Gookin, 1612-1687 written by Frederick William Gookin and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1912 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Gookin was a pioneering settler who resided in Virginia and Massachusetts, taking an interest in and writing about the Native Americans, toward whom he felt sympathy. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Gookin moved to his father's plantation in Virginia when he was aged only eighteen in 1630. Given a reference to his being a 'souldier', it is assumed that Gookin spent at least part of his youth in the military. Later in life he moved to the colonies of Massachusetts, becoming familiar with these and other lands. Gookin travelled to London on business multiple times, acting to relay information about newly discovered areas, their suitability for settlement, and challenges facing the colonists. Gookin gained distinction for his efforts to build rapport with the Native Americans. He promoted the conversion of natives to Christianity, with the eventual goal of permanent, peaceful coexistence. He also wrote two books about the native populations, and encouraged peace when violent conflicts such as King Philip's War broke out. He was also an early advocate for the lessening British influence upon the colonies. Frederick Gookin published this biography of his ancestor in 1912, piecing together many disparate sources in order to shed light on Daniel's life and deeds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen (Classic Reprint) written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
