Book Synopsis John Owen, Richard Baxter and the Formation of Nonconformity by : Tim Cooper
Download or read book John Owen, Richard Baxter and the Formation of Nonconformity written by Tim Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Owen (1616-1683) and Richard Baxter (1615-1691) were both pivotal figures in shaping the nonconformist landscape of Restoration England. Yet despite having much in common, they found themselves taking opposite sides in several important debates, and their relationship was marked by acute strain and mutual dislike. By comparing and contrasting the parallel careers of these two men, this book not only distils the essence of their differing theology, it also offers a broader understanding of the formation of English nonconformity. Placing these two figures in the context of earlier events, experience and differences, it argues that Restoration nonconformity was hampered by their strained personal relationship, which had its roots in their contrasting experiences of the English Civil War. This study thus contributes to historiography that explores the continuities across seventeenth-century England, rather than seeing a divide at 1660. It illustrates the way in which personality and experience shaped the development of wider movements.

Download or read book A New Creation in Christ written by T. Michael Christ and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-08 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the most important book on sanctification? For John Murray, it was Walter Marshal’s The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification. William Cowper praised Marshall: “I think Marshall one of the best and most spiritual expositors of Scripture.” The Marrow men also commended Marshall. Even Andrew Murray believed Gospel Mystery to be “the one book . . . admitted by all to be the standard on sanctification.” Marshall’s enduring value is well established, yet scarcely any resources explain Marshall’s theology. T. Michael Christ’s A New Creation in Christ fills this void by exploring Marshall’s theology in the context of the antinomian and neonomian controversies of Marshall’s day. At a time when interlocutors where pushing one another to further extremes, Marshall achieves balance because he grounds sanctification in the believer’s union with Christ and deploys two limiting concepts that discourage using one error to refute the other. He insists both that some measure of assurance of salvation must precede actual works of holiness (refuting neonomianims) and that holiness is a necessary part of salvation (countering antinomianism). A New Creation in Christ explores how these limiting concepts translate into practical help for those who, as Marshall says, pursue holiness “under the guilt and power of indwelling sin.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, early in the seventeenth century, the puritan pastor Anthony Wotton started to circulate manuscript statements of his theological revision, he was courting danger. Wotton was at once bold and subtle, a provocation to clerical brethren yet a skilled exponent of their technical disciplines. He addressed matters of fundamental importance: Christ's redemptive suffering and the imputation of justifying righteousness, God's saving grace and the moral law, faith and works, the gracious covenant and the legal covenant. Crucially important, for Wotton, was the interpretation of St. Paul's epistles in relation to the justification of sinners. This book examines Wotton's revisionary writings and the bitter doctrinal controversy that they stimulated, and traces the Wottonian complexion of the theology of John Goodwin, who became, over the course of a period of thirty years, a prolific exponent of unorthodox notions -- perhaps the most provocative of England's learned "heretics" and "blasphemers" in the age of the Long Parliament and the Interregnum. Contemporary responses to Wotton and Goodwin reveal how fixed were the core positions of orthodoxy and how worrisome were the challenges posed to them. Wotton and Goodwin trespassed -- often in the name of John Calvin -- upon some of the borderlands at which unusual uses of technical language became intolerable to the custodians of Calvinist truth. At these points, the contingency of theological language was uncomfortably exposed, and interlocutors discovered how rubbery were the signifiers of doctrine and how unstable the communication of "truth" could be.
Book Synopsis A Companion to Reformed Orthodoxy by : Herman Selderhuis
Download or read book A Companion to Reformed Orthodoxy written by Herman Selderhuis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects and comprises the latest in research on the history and theology of Reformed Orthodoxy (± 1550-1750) and is at the same time a work in progress, which makes this volume in the Companion series unique. The reason for this is not only the quality of the authors and the chapters they have produced, but also the fact that the study of Reformed Orthodoxy has in recent years taken an entirely new approach and has received renewed and spirited attention, whose results have so far not been brought together in one book. The renewed interest and reappraisal of this period in intellectual history is reflected in this work in which an international team of renowned scholars give an oversight of this fascinating period in intellectual history. Contributors include Willem van Asselt, Aza Goudriaan, Irena Backus, Mark Beach, Christian Moser, Anton Vos, Tobias Sarx, Andreas Mühling, Carl Trueman, Graeme Murdock, Joel Beeke, Sebastian Rehnman, Scott Clark, John Fesko, Luca Baschera, Maarten Wisse, Hugo Meijer, Pieter Rouwendal, and John Witte.
