Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Salmon served as royal secretary to Charles VI of France at a time when papal schism plagued the church, civil war divided the country, and the king suffered from an intermittent but incapacitating psychosis. In an effort to find a cure for the king's illness, stabilize the turbulent political situation, and secure his own future, Salmon supervised the production of two distinct versions of the beautifully illuminated guidebooks to good kingship known as his Dialogues. Where much previous scholarship has relied on an abridged edition of the Dialogues, Anne D. Hedeman returns to the complete, original manuscripts to present a fresh view of Salmon's purposes. She suggests that whereas the first version (1409) held out hope for the king's eventual complete recovery and accordingly counseled him on ruling wisely, the second version (1412-15) reflected a changed political situation: the French civil war had erupted, the compromise pope had died, and efforts to find a cure for the king had failed. include the future governors of France, especially the heir, Louis of Guyenne, who took on an increased role in the government of the realm during his father's attacks of madness. Hedeman shows how Salmon manipulated artistic style and iconography to construct a visual narrative that often was quite independent of its text. She also suggests how changes to the images in Franois de Rochechouart's copy of the manuscript (ca. 1500) signal efforts to appropriate Salmon's stature as a trusted royal advisor for later political purposes. Richly illustrated with plates from the original manuscripts, Of Counselors and Kings is a treat to the eye as well as to the intellect.

This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the invention of writing c. 3,300 BC, the world has mostly been ruled by kings. Though called different names: Pharaohs, Chieftains, Emperors, Caesars, Sultans, Khans, Maharajas, Monarchs, & Dictators, they act the same. Power, like gravity, concentrates into the hand of one person who rewards friends and punishes enemies. Socialist & Communist countries, too, though professing equality, inevitably are run by dictators. The most powerful king on the planet was the King of England. When Americans got the chance, they set up a government as far from a king as possible. A "republic" is where the people are king ruling through representatives. The Constitution is essentially a collection of hurdles to prevent power from snapping back to a king. Where did founders get their ideas? England's Magna Carta; Roman Republic; Athenian Democracy; and ultimately, Ancient Israel. Israel's initial 400 years out of Egypt was the first well-recorded instance of a nation ruled without a king. Did this influence colonial pastors who founded New England? What is needed for a nation to function without a king? Is the God of Bible an integral part? What is the difference between a democracy and a republic. How do they rise & fall? Did political activists develop tactics to help them fall: Machiavelli, Robespierre, Hegel, Marx, & Alinsky? Are these tactics being used in America today? -Identify racial & class fault lines running through society. -Fan real or perceived injustices into flames, creating tension & unrest. -When domestic violence erupts, everyone is so desperate to have order restored they relinquish freedoms to the state. 45 countries fell to communist dictators this way. How is domestic unrest created? With agitators, labor organizers, community organizers, agent provocateurs. Political advisor David Axelrod explained in a NPR interview, April 19, 2010: "In Chicago, there was an old tradition of throwing a brick through your own campaign office window, and then calling a press conference to say that you've been attacked." Stalin stated: "Crisis alone permitted the authorities to demand - and obtain - total submission and all necessary sacrifices from its citizens." Discover keys to preserving America's republic!

Book excerpt: Balance is lost throughout the kingdom when the whimsical King, overcome by impatience, decides to plant the wrong type of tree in the Royal Gardens, ignoring the cautious advice of his wisest counsellors. As havoc spreads across the land an absurd, and at times comical, battle unfolds where nature plays its part alongside humans and other beings. This deeply symbolic tale, to be enjoyed by children and adults alike, provides an allegory on the inner struggle of humankind. It is a reflection on how our lack of internal clarity has generated much of the chaos and environmental degradation we see in the world today. Based on an original story published in South America in 1998, this new bilingual edition presents some minor corrections to the Spanish version along with an excellent translation to English. Students will also find in it a valuable tool, alternating between both languages by simply flipping the book over.

Hailed as one of the best books of 2015 by NPR. Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet, in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods. Once the emperor has been overthrown, however, they each find themselves the leader of separate factions—two sides with very different ideas about how the world should be run and the meaning of justice. Fans of intrigue, intimate plots, and action will find a new series to embrace in the Dandelion Dynasty.

Book excerpt: Gain a knowledge of counseling methods that are practical and consistent with Christian theological convictions. What do the Scriptures say about counseling? What is the biblical basis for using Scriptures in counseling? What does it mean to think biblically about counseling-related issues? At the root of this book is the confidence that Christ and his Word are not only sufficient for effectively handling the personal and interpersonal challenges of life but are superior to the resources found in the world. The practice of psychological counseling is a ministry and should not belong only to the realm of humanistic and secular theories of the mind. Written to pastors, elders, deacons, seminary students, and laypeople; well-known pastor John MacArthur and contributors present a system of biblical truth that brings together people, their problems, and the living God. This kind of counseling is based on the convictions that: God's Word should be our counseling authority. Counseling is a part of the basic discipling ministry of the local church. God's people can and should be trained to counsel effectively. Counseling: How to Counsel Biblically provides biblical guidelines to counsel people who are struggling. The contributors represent some of America's leading biblical teachers and counselors, including: Ken L. Sarles, David Powlison, Douglas Bookman, David B. Maddox, Robert Smith, William W. Goode, and Dennis M. Swanson.

Book excerpt: Dr. Michael Belzman is the founder of the Association of Christian Alcohol & Drug Counselors (ACADC). An educator, counselor and pastor, he is also a speaker at congressional hearings warning law makers against making laws that exclude Faith-Based counselors from participation in the professional arena or infringe upon their religious freedom. ACADC is the only Christ-centered counselor certification organization authorized by any state government. ACADC Institute trains their students biblically so they can provide addiction counseling to Christians in need of the biblical rather than secular options. Few thought it possible that a Christ-centered certification board could exist in today's postmodern society, yet ACADC was written by the hand of God into the California Code of Regulations, opening a door that no man could close. From a background of teaching psychology at secular universities, and a false belief in human solutions to the problems of the soul, Dr. Belzman surrendered his life to Christ in 1980. By nurturing a personal relationship with Him through prayer and Bible study, he found that God's life principles and promises changed his life in a way that psychology or prescribed drugs could not do. He saw first-hand how God's power not only overcomes deep addiction, but can direct the decisions of kings. Dr. Belzman pastors ACADC Christian Fellowship founded on the notion that healing of the soul best takes place in the context of Christ-centered relationships bathed in prayer. He lives with his family in Calimesa, California and welcomes communication from anyone desiring to serve God by becoming a Christ-centered counselor. He and his staff of Christ-centered professionals may be contacted by email at [email protected], or by letter addressed to the Association of Christian Alcohol & Drug Counselors, attn: Mike Belzman, PO Box 8604, Redlands, CA 92375.

Book excerpt: What role does Scripture play in counseling? Today, we face a weakening of confidence in the Bible. This is just as true for the pastor offering counsel in his office as it is for the person in the pew talking with a struggling friend. We need to regain our confidence in God's living Word as sufficient to address the real-life issues we face today. Scripture and Counseling will help you understand how the Bible equips us to grow in counseling competence as we use it to tackle the complex issues of life. Divided into two sections, Part One develops a robust biblical view of Scripture’s sufficiency for "life and godliness" leading to increased confidence in God's Word. Part Two teaches how to use Scripture in the counseling process. This section demonstrates how a firm grasp of the sufficiency of Scripture leads to increased competence in the ancient art of personally ministering God's Word to others. Part of the Biblical Counseling Coalition series, Scripture and Counseling brings you the wisdom of twenty ministry leaders who write so you can have confidence that God’s Word is sufficient, necessary, and relevant to equip God’s people to address the complex issues of life in a broken world. It blends theological wisdom with practical expertise and is accessible to pastors, church leaders, counseling practitioners, and students, equipping them to minister the truth and power of God’s word in the context of biblical counseling, soul care, spiritual direction, pastoral care, and small group facilitation.
