C'est dans l'entresol qu'il occupait à Versailles, au-dessus des appartements de la favorite de Louis XV qu'il traça le zig-zag : la première représentation visuelle de la circulation des richesses dans un Etat. Les économistes en font aujourd'hui l'un des fondateurs de leur discipline et ils voient dans le Tableau économique la première esquisse de leurs modèles mathématiques ou de leurs comptabilités nationales. En son temps, Quesnay fut vénéré par ses élèves, les physiocrates, comme le " Confucius de l'Europe ". Depuis l'édition pionnière de l'INED en 1958, aucune publication en français n'a proposé une vision d'ensemble de l'œuvre de Quesnay, et plus particulièrement de son œuvre économique. Épuisée depuis deux décennies, elle n'a pas été remplacée. L'édition de 2005 s'appuie sur les recherches d'histoire du savoir économique et d'histoire intellectuelle menées depuis un demi-siècle. Elle prend en compte les critères actuels d'édition scientifique des textes du Siècle des Lumières. Elle inclut aussi de nombreux inédits tirés, notamment, du fonds Mirabeau des Archives Nationales. Ainsi le Despotisme de la Chine est publié pour la première fois sur la base d'un manuscrit. Il révèle un essai de sociologie générale avant la lettre, une théorie du gouvernement et de l'action du souverain dont Quesnay considérait que la Chine offrait le cas exemplaire. Rassemblées en une même publication et établies de la manière a plus rigoureuse, ces Œuvres économiques complètes et autres textes procurent aux historiens, aux économistes et aux spécialistes de théorie politique un témoignage capital de ce que pouvait être l'une des conceptions les plus réfléchies de l'économie et de la politique au XVIIIe siècle. Les écrits de Quesnay et de ses disciples, diffusés dans toute l'Europe des Lumières, ont bouleversé les idées qu'on s'y faisait de la science du gouvernement."

Interest appeared to wane after World War II, but in recent decades, there has been a marked renaissance of interest and research in the contributions of French-speaking authors. Drawing on the flow of recent research, this book presents a new assessment of the history of political economy in France incorporating both novel presentations of some traditional subjects and topics that are not usually studied. This first volume deals with the history of political economy in France in the Age of Enlightenment. After presenting a kind of “review of the troops” and some main developments inherited from preceding centuries, the chapters are devoted to P. de Boisguilbert’s foundation of liberal political economy; J. Law’s monetary theory and policy; the many strands of “commerce politique”; the theoretical developments of F. Quesnay and the physiocratic movement; and A.-R.-J. Turgot’s, J.-J.-L. Graslin’s and M.-J.-A.-N. Caritat de Condorcet’s sensationist political economy. The volume then examines some political critiques of liberal political economy and goes on with a study of the first attempts to quantify economic variables and to formalise the economic discourse. It concludes with a chapter on the importance of translations into French of books published abroad, and with the main institutional and theoretical developments which happened during the French Revolution. Book excerpt: Our tendency to read French Enlightenment political writing from a narrow disciplinary perspective has obscured the hybrid character of political philosophy, rhetoric, and natural science in the period. As Michèle Duchet and others have shown, French Enlightenment thinkers developed a philosophical anthropology to support new political norms and models. This book explores how five important eighteenth-century French political authors—Rousseau, Diderot, La Mettrie, Quesnay, and Rétif de La Bretonne—also constructed a "political zoology" in their philosophical and literary writings informed by animal references drawn from Enlightenment natural history, science, and physiology. Drawing on theoretical work by Derrida, Latour, de Fontenay, and others, it shows how these five authors signed on to the old rhetorical tradition of animal comparisons in political philosophy, which they renewed via the findings and speculations of contemporary science. Engaging with recent scholarship on Enlightenment political thought, it also explores the links between their political zoologies and their family resemblance as "liberal" political thinkers.
