Book Synopsis Dictionary of Visual Discourse by : Barry Sandywell
Download or read book Dictionary of Visual Discourse written by Barry Sandywell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantial and ambitious dictionary explores the languages and cultures of visual studies. It provides the basis for understanding the foundations and motivations of current theoretical and academic discourse, as well as the different forms of visual culture that have come to organize everyday life. The book is firmly placed in the context of the 'visual turn' in contemporary thought. It has been designed as an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary introduction to the vocabularies and grammars of visuality that inform thinking in the arts and humanities today. It also offers insight into the philosophical frameworks which underpin the field of visual culture. A central theme that runs throughout the entries is the task of moving away from a narrow understanding of visuality inherited from traditional philosophy toward a richer cultural and multi-sensorial philosophy of concrete experience. The dictionary incorporates intertextual links that encourage readers to explore connections between major themes, theories and key figures in the field. In addition the author's introduction provides a comprehensive and critical introduction which documents the significance of the visual turn in contemporary theory and culture. It is accompanied by an extensive bibliography and further reading list. As both a substantive academic contribution to this growing field and a useful reference tool, this book offers a theoretical introduction to the many languages of visual discourse. It will be essential reading for graduate students and scholars in visual studies, the sociology of visual culture, cultural and media studies, philosophy, art history and theory, design, film and communication studies.
Book Synopsis Paul's Line of Thought in 2 Corinthians 4:16-5:10 by : Fredrik Lindgård
Download or read book Paul's Line of Thought in 2 Corinthians 4:16-5:10 written by Fredrik Lindgård and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2005 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fredrik Lindgard analyzes verses 4:16-5:10 in 2 Corinthians, verses which have often been used to argue that Paul's eschatology developed over time or to ascertain whether or not Paul is an anthropological dualist. Paul's concern is how the Corinthians see him. His aim is to show them that he is frank and open to them and that his attitude to adversities confirms that he is a real apostle. He reveals his thoughts and emotions when facing suffering. The author shows that the section and its context do not support the view that Paul changed or developed his eschatology. Instead, the text displays the unsystematic character of Paul's eschatology. Concepts which Paul normally uses separately occur side by side without elaboration. Although Paul uses both dualistic and holistic language, the dominating feature is dualism. The analysis shows that a wide rhetorical approach can be useful when trying to understand Paul.
Book Synopsis When Life Gives You Risk, Make Risk Theatre by : Edwin Wong
Download or read book When Life Gives You Risk, Make Risk Theatre written by Edwin Wong and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creators, Innovators, and Theatremakers: Defy the Smallness of the Stage With the Greatness of Your Daring Wong’s first book upended tragic literary theory by arguing that risk is the dramatic fulcrum of the action. It also launched an international playwriting competition (risktheatre.com). His second book expands on how chance directs the action, both on and off the stage. Inside you will find three risk theatre tragedies by acclaimed playwrights: In Bloom (Gabriel Jason Dean), The Value (Nicholas Dunn), and Children of Combs and Watch Chains (Emily McClain). From the poppy fields of Afghanistan to the motel rooms and doctors’ offices lining interstate expressways, these plays—by simulating risk—will show you how theatre is a dress rehearsal for life. Six risk theatre essays round off this volume. In a dazzling display from Aeschylus to Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy, and Arthur Miller, Wong reinterprets theatre through chance and probability theory. After risk theatre, you will never look at literature in the same way. Tomorrow, Whoever Says Drama will Say Risk
Book Synopsis Oedipus at Colonus and King Lear: Classical and Early Modern Intersections by : Silvia Bigliazzi
Download or read book Oedipus at Colonus and King Lear: Classical and Early Modern Intersections written by Silvia Bigliazzi and published by Skenè. Texts and Studies. This book was released on 2019-12-29 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of King Lear seems to fill in the blank space separating the end of Oedipus Tyrannus and the beginning of Oedipus at Colonus. In both Oedipus at Colonus and the latter part of King Lear we are presented with an old man who was once a King and, following his expulsion from his kingdom on account of a crime or of an error, is turned into a ‘no-thing’. This happens in the time of the division of the kingdom, which is also the time of the genesis of intraspecific conflict and, consequently, of the end of the dynasty. This collection of essays offers a range of perspectives on the many common concerns of these two plays, from the relation between fathers and sons/daughters to madness and wisdom, from sinning and suffering to ‘being’ and ‘non-being’ in human and divine time. It also offers an overarching critical frame that interrogates questions of ‘source’ and ‘reception’, probing into the possible exchangeability of perspectives in a game of mirrors that challenges ideas of origin.

Book Synopsis Hegel on Sacred Poetry by : Víctor Ibarra B.
Download or read book Hegel on Sacred Poetry written by Víctor Ibarra B. and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his aesthetic reflections, Hegel identifies the Judaic Psalms, which he calls sacred poetry, as the core of the sublime. While it has often been suggested that Hegel showed little interest in the notion of sublimity, Ibarra B. contends that this interpretation is misleading and warrants further elucidation. Introducing a new perspective, he argues that a careful examination of Hegel's remarks on sacred poetry reveals a critique of the notion of agency as depicted in the Psalms. By revisiting Hegel's early works predating 1800 and his dispute with Kant's concept of freedom, this studyoffers a practical account of Hegel's view on sublime art within the framework of his philosophy of love.
