This book was released on 1992-07-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are moving away from a centrally planned economy toward integration within the global economy. How did this transition begin? Is this an aim which all the countries can afford? What conditions are to be met so that the countries will achieve a level of development comparable with the average level of their industrial partners? In this 1992 volume, leading international political economists from both the East and West provide an in-depth analysis of these questions. The contributors assess how the transition to the market requires liberalizing foreign trade, introducing convertibility, and transforming property structures, all of which are also part of the ongoing domestic reform. They also examine how these countries overcome their development lag and implement a restructuring policy.

Book Synopsis Foreign Trade in Eastern Europe's Transition by : Dani Rodrik
Download or read book Foreign Trade in Eastern Europe's Transition written by Dani Rodrik and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of 1991, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland have achieved a substantial degree of openness to foreign trade. In all three countries, trade is now de-monopolized and licensing and quotas playa very small role. Exchange controls have virtually disappeared for current-account transactions. Judging by partner statistics, export performance has been impressive in all three countries, and import booms are under way in at least Hungary and Poland as well. However, there is no evidence that exporters have had any success in finding Western markets for the exports they have lost in Eastern markets. The collapse of the CMEA represents a significant shock, amounting to a loss of real income of 3 1/2 percent of GDP in Poland and 7-8 percent of GDP in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Export performance is attributable to exchange-rate policy in part, but the collapse of domestic demand has possibly played an even more important role. Finally, trade liberalization so far appears to have had little effect on price discipline, in large part because of the substantial devaluations that have accompanied it.

Book excerpt: PAPERsJOF THE WORLD TRADE CONFERENCE 1985 HELD IN AMSTERDAM ON THE OCCASION OF THE OPENING OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AMSTERDAM ON 4,5, AND 6 SEPTEMBER 1985 Between the covers of this book the reader will find the papers presented at the World Trade Conference 1985, held on 4,5 and 6 September 1985. This conference was organized by the World Trade Center Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam and the Free University of Amsterdam on the occasion of the opening of the World Trade Center Amsterdam. The aim was to bring together businessmen, academics and policy makers in order to study pro blems of international trade and finance from a variety of viewpoints, sc. of those who are engaged in the cut and thrust of trade and finance, those who analyse it without being themselves involved, and those who regulate it. Hopefully this resulted in some useful cross fertilisation. The conference covered not only the whole globe, including the Japanese threat, the problems of the dollar, East-West trade, the Pacific Basin, barter trade etcetera, but also spanned a long historical period. The present and the future were examined, but also the past. The articles provide a round-up of what's going on in the field of international trade and finance. They cover a wide field, not remaining within the traditional boundaries of international economics. At the same time, the organizers strove to avoid shallowness.
