Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys: Sweden 2019 written by OECD and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swedish economy is growing steadily, but the expansion has peaked and global uncertainties weigh on the outlook. Monetary and fiscal stimulus has supported the recovery, but is being gradually withdrawn as the economy operates close to full capacity. Strong public finances provide space for fiscal loosening in the case of a downturn, especially as low interest rates reduce monetary policy margins. Beyond a strong economy, Sweden enjoys high well-being, low inequality and strong environmental performance. Nevertheless, some structural issues need to be addressed, notably alleviating obstacles to housing affordability and enhancing the efficiency of public services by seizing the opportunities offered by digitalisation. Maintaining a high level of workforce skills is essential to sustain growth, competitiveness and social cohesion, calling for action to lift educational performance and promote lifelong learning. Against a background of lacklustre school results and increasing segregation, this Survey proposes a coherent set of reforms to strengthen education institutions, better target funding to pupils' needs, enhance the steering of competition and school choice, increase the attractiveness of the teaching profession and reinforce teacher education. SPECIAL FEATURE: EDUCATION

Book Synopsis OECD Economic Surveys: Switzerland 2022 by : Oecd
Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys: Switzerland 2022 written by Oecd and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-20 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swiss economy has shown resilience but the COVID-19 pandemic continues to raise uncertainty and challenges. Effective government support has helped protect employment and buttress household incomes. Nevertheless, some sectors and groups have been hit hard, with a disproportionate impact on low-middle skilled and low-wage workers. Fostering productivity growth is crucial to maintain high living standards in the future. Switzerland is one of the top OECD performers in terms of labour productivity, but productivity growth has slowed markedly over the past three decades. Lower barriers to free and open competition within the internal market and continued openness to international markets would spur competitive pressures and raise productivity and growth. In addition, effective and sustainable use of resources can sustain stronger and more inclusive growth. Raising labour market inclusiveness, by keeping higher numbers of older workers in employment as well as reducing the gender pay gap, would help the recovery and improve living standards of all. SPECIAL FEATURE: FOSTERING A STRONG LABOUR MARKET TO SUPPORT THE RECOVERY AND SUSTAIN GROWTH

Structural reforms, high primary budget surpluses and debt measures underpinned Greece’s recovery and rising confidence. Then the COVID-19 pandemic struck, abruptly interrupting the recovery and adding new challenges to raising inclusiveness, competitiveness and growth.
Book Synopsis OECD Economic Surveys: Switzerland 2019 by : OECD
Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys: Switzerland 2019 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swiss citizens continue to enjoy high living standards on a range of dimensions. Economic growth has slowed but the healthy labour market is still supporting incomes and consumption. However, risks to the outlook are building. Monetary policy has been very accommodative but low interest rates are adding to financial risks. Fiscal policy is sound and debt low. There is scope to make greater use of available fiscal space. Adapting to population ageing is becoming pressing. This trend, along with digital transformation, will bring new opportunities for the economy and society, but challenges as well. Policies have not kept up with rising life expectancy, particularly the statutory retirement age. Updating the pension system and lowering barriers to working longer would ensure that workers continue to receive adequate incomes during retirement.
