Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the field of EFL (English as a foreign language) classroom learning within a formal learning institution. Drawing on theories and methods from various disciplines, this book explores the question which has been frustrating language teachers: why do so many students remain reticent and anxious in language class? Based on a large-scale survey and a more focused case study, the book argues persuasively that reticence and anxiety in formal EFL classrooms are important factors in determining the outcome of language learning. By means of a triangulated research method, this book examines various aspects of reticence and anxiety in EFL classroom learning situations. The author analyses causes and consequences, differences in terms of gender and proficiency level, and coping strategies.

Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 1998 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, Nova Southeastern University, language: English, abstract: The objective of this paper is to find solutions or strategies for the classroom instructor that will enhance students’ skills in oral practice, and will fulfill the curriculum objectives outlined to the faculty staff by the target school. The target school serves its local community which consists of mostly Hispanics. The semester for each level of study, lasts for one month. Within this month of instruction, the students have to complete and improve their listening and oral skills through the use of grammar, listening, and oral exercises which are supplemented by audio and visual aids, but directly instructed and guided by a classroom teacher. The problems that the target school faces lies in the discrepancies found on the test results of the exit examination compared to classroom performance results. The target group passes the examination given at the school with average marks, but due to the beliefs of the administration, those scores can be considered close to failing.

Book excerpt: The ELT & Linguistics Dictionary is a companion to the English language as a second / foreign language study. The Dictionary is more likely a reference/guide book for ELT professionals and students who have been taking up EFL/ESL courses at their graduate and post graduate education. So it is; Comprehensive: almost 2321 entries covering all integrated skills in English language training, linguistic terms closely related to ELT, EFL, ELL, ESL, ESOL, FLL, FLT, TEFL, TESL, & TESOL ; Informative: it provides bibliographies for most of the entries and a wide range of cross-referencing for more conceptual headwords; Referential: it gives a hand to the ELT professionals to understand the concepts more specifically used in ELT literature with the original definitions from the prolific writers in the ELT world.
