Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph proposes a comparative approach to all the ways of denoting ‘more than one’ entity, from collective and aggregate nouns (with the first-ever typology), to count plurals, partly substantivised adjectives and conjoined NPs. This semantic feature approach to plurality, which cuts across number, the count/non-count distinction, and lexical/NP levels, reveals a very consistent Scale of Unit Integration, which establishes clear-cut boundaries for collective nouns, and accommodates cases such as three elephant, cattle or a chain of islands. The study also offers a refined understanding of aggregate nouns (a category nearly as large as that of collective nouns) and quantification in pseudo-partitives, develops Guillaume’s notion of ‘internal plurality’, and proposes the innovative concept of ‘hyperonyms of plural classes’ (e.g. furniture). The Animacy Hierarchy is also found to be influential, beyond hybrid agreement. The book aims to be accessible to scholars of any theoretical background interested in these topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eight chapters, David Harned explores the theology of the Apostles’ Creed, taking the position that the creed, in fact, provides us with a master image for self-understanding, and that controlling image is “child of God.” The creed is seen as being important for personality formation and the development of “character,” rather than as either a statement of beliefs or a loyalty oath. Harned’s ninth and final chapter is intended for those who wish to pursue further the question of master imagery for the formation of a Christian Sense of Identity.

Book excerpt: In New York City, a homeless man with amnesia must unravel his past while a serial killer stalks the streets, in this taut thriller from the author of the Mongo Mysteries. When he wakes up he remembers nothing, not even his own name. He doesn’t know why he’s squatting in Central Park or why he carries the human femur that earned him the nickname “Bone.” He has no idea what he’s done over the past year wandering the streets of Manhattan—or what came before. Det. Lt. Perry Lightning suspects that Bone is the serial killer who’s been brutalizing the city’s homeless population. He also suspects Bone is playing games, pretending to have no knowledge of his life or his actions. But despite what the detective thinks, Bone doesn’t remember committing those horrific crimes. With the help of a social worker named Anne and a street performer named Zulu, Bone attempts to discover the truth. But his pursuit of the past is about to take them deep into New York’s underground . . . where untold horrors await.

Book excerpt: Anthropology begins in the encounter with the ‘exotic’: what stands outside of—and challenges—conventional or established understandings. This volume confronts the distortions of orientalism, ethnocentrism, and romantic nostalgia to expose exoticism, defined as the construction of false and unsubstantiated difference. Its aim is to re-found the importance of the exotic in the development of anthropological knowledge and to overcome methodological dualisms and dualistic approaches. Chapters look at the risk of exoticism in the perspectivist approach, the significant exotic corrective of Lévi-Strauss vis-à-vis an imperializing Eurocentrism, our nostalgic relationship with the ethnographic record, and the attempts of local communities to readapt previous exoticized referents, renegotiate their identity, and ‘counter-exoticize.’ This volume demonstrates a range of approaches that will be valuable for researchers and students seeking to effectively establish comparative methodological frameworks that transcend issues of relativism and universalism.

Book excerpt: The Swiss artist Miriam Cahn (*1949, Basel) deals with political and social themes in oil paintings; charcoal, chalk, and colored and lead pencil drawings; and in photographs, films, and installations. Strong color is characteristic of her work, forming a stark contrast to the recurring motifs of violence, tenderness, war, destruction, and physical infirmity. Her habit of commenting upon her work in writing is a golden thread running throughout Cahn's career. She illuminates her own art, commenting in the process on art and world events, and she sets up the texts opposite her artworks in exhibitions and publications. WRITING IN RAGE is the first compilation of her writing by itself, and includes essays, journal entries, and correspondence with friends, foes, family members, and gallerists. The book provides very personal insights into Cahn's life, her family, and the art market, introducing the reader to a disputatious, independent spirit.
