Book Synopsis How Mutual Funds Work by : Albert J. Fredman
Download or read book How Mutual Funds Work written by Albert J. Fredman and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1993 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hope and faith were in short supply among Soviet liberals by the late 1960s. Writing about the popular culture of the Soviet intellectual during the years of post-Stalinist thaw, Anatoly Vishevsky cites the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia as a formal landmark that inaugurated the period in which irony was propelled to the forefront of the literary and cultural scene. Irony was the direct product of disillusion and despair over the apparent abandonment of the promising post-thaw ideals and values. This period that ended with the beginning of perestroika and glasnost, Vishevsky believes, also was the incubator of many processes now prevalent in the country's literature and culture." "Although censorship kept this ironic worldview off the main stage of Soviet literature, it surfaced in peripheral forms - stand-up comedy, songs of the "bards," short stories in periodicals and newspapers, radio and TV shows, local cinematography, regional literature - works that friends discussed over kitchen tables, "where most heated debates usually took place in the Soviet Union."" "A major part of the book is devoted to a corpus of writing never before treated critically: the ironic stories that appeared in the late 1960s and the 1970s in Soviet humor periodicals and in the humor pages of newspapers and magazines. These stories, each three to ten typed pages, were presumably tolerated by the Soviet authorities because of their brevity and their often unassuming placement in the back pages of magazines. The stories collected here, translated for the first time in English and including several by Aksyonov and Bitov, constitute a new subgenre in the history of Russian literature - the ironic short story."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Give Peace One More Chance! by : Anthony Tihamer Komjathy
Download or read book Give Peace One More Chance! written by Anthony Tihamer Komjathy and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1992 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Tihamer Komjathy grew up in a small Hungarian town, Satoraljaujhely, which was divided into a Czechoslovakian half and a Hungarian half. The author became interested in the history of Eastern Europe at a young age and has devoted much of his life to examining the treaties and events which have defined geographic and political situations throughout the Eastern countries. Give Peace One More Chance! compares the treaties following both WWI and WWII. Komjathy discusses the failure of the treaties and explains that they disregarded the moral principle of national self-determination. He looks at the use of force intended to "preserve" peace and the demands, especially those of the Hungarians, to rectify the dishonesty and manipulation imposed upon them. Komjathy interprets the implications of revisions of the Munich Agreement, the First and Second Vienna Awards and the re-annexation of Ruthenia by Hungary and then, after WWII, the serious consequences of Stalin's (and the Allied Powers') condemnation of the treaties. Komjathy seeks to revise the 1947 Parisian treaty in order to prevent the repetition of such calamities in the Danube Valley. He not only points out existing dangers, but also suggests very useful solutions. Contents: The First Vienna Award; Reunion of Hungary and Ruthenia; The Second Vienna Award; Comparison of Tranon and Paris Treaty; Conclusions and Suggestions; Epilogue; Appendixes: Agreement Between Hungary and Croatia; The Munich Agreement; Letter of the Hungarian Ambassador; Bibliography; List of Maps.
Book Synopsis I'm Right and You're an Idiot by : James Hoggan
Download or read book I'm Right and You're an Idiot written by James Hoggan and published by New Society Publisher. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Explor[es] the underlying history and psychology of public discourse . . . should be required reading for politicians and public advocates.” —Real Change The most pressing problem we face today is not climate change. It is pollution in the public square, where a toxic smog of adversarial rhetoric, propaganda, and polarization stifles discussion and debate, creating resistance to change and thwarting our ability to solve our collective problems. In this second edition of I’m Right and You’re an Idiot, James Hoggan grapples with this critical issue, through interviews with outstanding thinkers and drawing on wisdom from highly regarded public figures. Featuring a new, radically revised prologue, afterword, and a new chapter addressing the changes in the public discourse since the 2016 US election, his comprehensive analysis explores: · How political will is manipulated · How tribalism shuts down open-minded thinking, undermines trust, and helps misinformation thrive · Why facts alone fail and how language is manipulated and dissent silenced · The importance of dialogue, empathy, and pluralistic narrative reframing arguments to create compelling narratives and spur action. Our species’ greatest survival strategy has always been foresight and the ability to leverage intelligence to overcome adversity. For too long now this capacity has been threatened by the sorry state of public discourse. Focusing on proven techniques to foster more powerful and effective communication, I’m Right and You’re an Idiot will appeal to readers looking for deep insights and practical advice in these troubling times. “This is a must-read for anyone tired of the bullying, the propagandizing, the screaming, and the bullsh*t.” —Dr. Samantha Nutt, author of Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid
