Book Synopsis Easter Earthquake by : James A. Harnish
Download or read book Easter Earthquake written by James A. Harnish and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been in an earthquake? Earthquakes shake our most basic assumptions: that the ground will remain steady beneath our feet, that the world's current existence is the way it will always be. But when tectonic plates shift under the earth's surface and the ground shakes beneath our feet, it rattles the bedrock assumptions on which we build our lives. The Gospel of Matthew reports that on the first Easter morning, an earthquake rocked the earth, ripped open the tomb, and scared the Roman guards at the tomb, who "shook with fear and became like dead men" (Matthew 28:4). This is the second earthquake reported by Matthew. The first one took place on Good Friday, when the noonday sky turned black and Jesus died. In Easter Earthquake, James Harnish invites us to place the resurrection at the center of our Lenten journey. This 6-week study explores how Christ's resurrection shakes some of our most basic assumptions about ourselves and God. "The earth-shaking promise of Easter is that God has not forsaken any of us," Harnish writes. "The risen Christ will meet us along the confused, chaotic, fearful paths of our lives and speak the same words the women hear at the tomb: 'Do not be afraid .'" This book reverses the usual focus of Lenten studies by starting at the empty tomb and seeing the entire journey in light of the resurrection. Join James Harnish in this energizing exploration that will inspire you to live as a more faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. FEATURES A guide for daily mediation and prayer An outline for small-group meetings Begins with Ash Wednesday and continues through Easter Each week contains 5 readings, a prayer focus, and suggestions for small-group interaction Includes a hymn each week

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics by : Rajesh Rupakhety
Download or read book Proceedings of the International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics written by Rajesh Rupakhety and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes a collection of chapters that were presented at the International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (ICESD), held in Reykjavik, Iceland between 12-14 June 2017. The contributions address a wide spectrum of subjects related to wind engineering, earthquake engineering, and structural dynamics. Dynamic behavior of ultra long span bridges that are discussed in this volume represent one of the most challenging and ambitious contemporary engineering projects. Concepts, principles, and applications of earthquake engineering are presented in chapters addressing various aspects such as ground motion modelling, hazard analysis, structural analysis and identification, design and detailing of structures, risk due to non-structural components, and risk communication and mitigation. The presented chapters represent the state-of-the-art in these fields as well as the most recent developments.

Book Synopsis Issues in Urban Earthquake Risk by : B.E. Tucker
Download or read book Issues in Urban Earthquake Risk written by B.E. Tucker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban seismic risk is growing worldwide and is, increasingly, a problem of developing countries. In 1950, one in four of the people living in the world's fifty largest cities was earthquake-threatened, while in the year 2000, about one in two will be. Further, ofthose people living in earthquake-threatened cities in 1950, about two in three were located in developing countries, while in the year 2000, about nine in ten will be. Unless urban seismic safety is improved, particularly in developing countries, future earthquakes will have ever more disastrous social and economic consequences. In July 1992, an international meeting was organized with the purpose of examining one means ofimproving worldwide urban safety. Entitled "Uses ofEarthquake Damage Scenarios for Cities of the 21st Century," this meeting was held in conjunction with the Tenth World Conference ofEarthquake Engineering, in Madrid, Spain. An earthquake damage scenario (EDS) is adescription of the consequences to an urban area of a large, but expectable earthquake on the critical facilities of that area. In Californian and Japanese cities, EDSes have been used for several decades, mainly for the needs of emergency response officials. The Madrid meeting examined uses of this technique for other purposes and in other, less developed countries. As a result of this meeting, it appeared that EDSes bad significant potential to improve urban seismic safety worldwide.

Book Synopsis Cascadia's Fault by : Jerry Thompson
Download or read book Cascadia's Fault written by Jerry Thompson and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrillingly rendered, yet “level–headed” look at the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the devastating natural disasters it promises (Booklist) There is a crack in the earth's crust that runs roughly 31 miles offshore, approximately 683 miles from Northern California up through Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia. The Cascadia Subduction Zone has generated massive earthquakes over and over again throughout geologic time—at least thirty–six major events in the last 10,000 years. This fault generates a monster earthquake about every 500 years. And the monster is due to return at any time. It could happen 200 years from now, or it could be tonight. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is virtually identical to the offshore fault that wrecked Sumatra in 2004. It will generate the same earthquake we saw in Sumatra, at magnitude nine or higher, sending crippling shockwaves across a far wider area than any California quake. Slamming into Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Victoria, and Vancouver, it will send tidal waves to the shores of Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, damaging the economies of the Pacific Rim countries and their trading partners for years to come. In light of recent massive quakes in Haiti, Chile, and Mexico, Cascadia's Fault not only tells the story of this potentially devastating earthquake and the tsunamis it will spawn, it also warns us about an impending crisis almost unprecedented in modern history.
