Book Synopsis Don Quixote and Catholicism by : Michael McGrath
Download or read book Don Quixote and Catholicism written by Michael McGrath and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hundred years since its publication, Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote continues to inspire and to challenge its readers. The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel’s Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes’s hero to Cervantes’s text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he proposes that his study represents one way of interpreting Don Quixote and acts as a complement to other approaches. It is McGrath’s assertion that the religiosity and spirituality of Cervantes’s masterpiece illustrate that Don Quixote is inseparable from the teachings of Catholic orthodoxy. Furthermore, he argues that Cervantes’s spirituality is as diverse as early modern Catholicism. McGrath does not believe that the novel is primarily a religious or even a serious text, and he considers his arguments through the lens of Cervantine irony, satire, and multiperspectivism. As a Roman Catholic who is a Hispanist, McGrath proposes to reclaim Cervantes’s Catholicity from the interpretive tradition that ascribes a predominantly Erasmian reading of the novel. When the totality of biographical and sociohistorical events and influences that shaped Cervantes’s religiosity are considered, the result is a new appreciation of the novel’s moral didactic and spiritual orientation.
Book Synopsis La aventura ignaciana by : Kevin O'Brien
Download or read book La aventura ignaciana written by Kevin O'Brien and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis A Companion to Ignatius of Loyola by :
Download or read book A Companion to Ignatius of Loyola written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Companion to Ignatius of Loyola aims at placing Loyola’s life, his writings, and spirituality in a broader context of important late medieval and early modern movements and processes that have been appreciated too little by historians who explored Ignatius more as the colossal icon of the so-called Counterreformation than as a man influenced by the dramatic and revolutionary period in which he lived. One book will be never able to cover all aspects of such rich and controversial a figure as Ignatius of Loyola but the fifteen chapters of this volume indicate important directions of current scholarship that reassesses the previous scholarship and suggests new angles of studies on this pivotal figure of early modern period. An interview with editor Robert A. Maryks about this Companion is available on YouTube.

Book Synopsis The Jesuit Order As a Synagogue of Jews by : Robert A. Maryks
Download or read book The Jesuit Order As a Synagogue of Jews written by Robert A. Maryks and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Jesuit Order as a Synagogue of Jews" the author explains how Christians with Jewish family backgrounds went within less than forty years from having a leading role in the foundation of the Society of Jesus to being prohibited from membership in it. The author works at the intersection to two important historical topics, each of which attracts considerable scholarly attention but that have never received sustained and careful attention together, namely, the early modern histories of the Jesuit order and of Iberian purity of blood concerns. An analysis of the pro- and anti-converso texts in this book (both in terms of what they are claiming and what their limits are) advance our understanding of early modern, institutional Catholicism at the intersection of early modern religious reform and the new racism developing in Spain and spreading outwards.

Book Synopsis Faith and Fanaticism by : Robert Hooworth-Smith
Download or read book Faith and Fanaticism written by Robert Hooworth-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Inquisition is often seen as the archetype of religious fervour and fanaticism, and several of the papers here naturally focus on its activities. Overall, however, this volume aims to look at the broader context of religious attitudes in Spain, from the end of the 15th to the late 17th century. In an examination of how the religious orders behaved, the contributors demonstrate that concepts which may now appear excessive were perceived at that time. Similarly, poetry and other literary texts provide evidence for how Jews viewed Christians and Christians viewed Moors.
Book Synopsis A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism by : Robert Aleksander Maryks
Download or read book A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism written by Robert Aleksander Maryks and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism, Robert A. Maryks provides thirteen unique essays discussing the Jesuit mystical tradition, a somewhat neglected aspect of Jesuit historiography that stretches as far back as the order’s co-founder, Ignatius of Loyola, his spiritual visions at Manresa, and ultimately the mystical perspective contained in his Spiritual Exercises. The volume’s contributions on the most significant representatives of the Jesuit mystical tradition—from Baltasar Álvarez to Louis Lallemant to Hugo Makibi Enomiya-Lassalle—aim to fill this lacuna in Jesuit historiography. Although intended primarily as a handbook for scholars seeking to further their own research in this area, the volume will undoubtedly be of interest to scholars and students of Jesuit studies more broadly.
