Book Synopsis The Mediterranean Sea by : Stefano Goffredo
Download or read book The Mediterranean Sea written by Stefano Goffredo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-09 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an indispensable addition to the multidisciplinary coverage of the science of the Mediterranean Sea. The editors have gathered leading authorities from the fields of Marine Biology, Ecology, paleoclimatology, Chemical and Physical Oceanography, Zoology, Botany, Aquatic Photosynthesis, Socioeconomics, Mariculture, Mediterranean History and Science of Humanity. Beginning with the birth of the Mediterranean Sea and its myths. From coral to fish, an introduction is given to its major inhabitants of plants and animals past and present. The chapters illustrate how organisms interact as part of the structure and function of the Sea's main ecosystems. The rise of the Mediterranean as the cradle of the Western Civilization leads to a discourse on the status of human interaction with the sea. Accelerating global climate change, water warming, ocean acidification and sea level rise, and analyses of their effects on key organisms, entire ecosystems and human socioeconomics are given. Forecasting and predictions are presented taking into account different future scenarios from the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change). The volume is richly illustrated in color, with an extensive bibliography. A valuable addition to the limited literature in the field, offering up-to-date broad coverage merging science and humanities.
Book Synopsis The Mediterranean Sea in the Era of Global Change 1 by : Christophe Migon
Download or read book The Mediterranean Sea in the Era of Global Change 1 written by Christophe Migon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its particular characteristics, the Mediterranean Sea is often viewed as a microcosm of the World Ocean. Its proportionally-reduced dimensions and peculiar hydrological circulation render it susceptible to environmental and climatic constraints, which are rapidly evolving. The Mediterranean is therefore an ideal site to examine, in order to better understand a number of key oceanographic phenomena. This is especially true of the Ligurian Sea where, due to its geology, oceanic conditions are found close to the coast. As such, 30 years ago, an offshore time-series site provided a fresh impetus to a long history of marine biology research, which has generated a very important body of data and knowledge. This is the first volume, in a two-volume series, that summarizes this research. Across these two books, the reader will find 13 chapters that examine the geology, physics, chemistry and biology of the Ligurian Sea ? always with the goal of providing key elements of oceanography in a changing world.
Book Synopsis Effects of Riverine Inputs on Coastal Ecosystems and Fisheries Resources by :
Download or read book Effects of Riverine Inputs on Coastal Ecosystems and Fisheries Resources written by and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five chapters are presented which address a number of aspects of riverine and runoff effects on coastal marine systems. Examples are presented and documented in which the apparent effects of runnoff-related nutrient enrichment and consequent eutrophication have been important. Various other aspects, such as sedimentation, etc. are explored. The purpose is to advance the scientific, policy, and political dialogue on issues related to utilization and protection of coastal marine ecosystems. The "Marine Catchment Basin" or "MCB" appears to be the logical scale of policy and management interest wherever terrestrial runoff has substantial impacts on a marine system. The MCB expands the "marine ecosystem" concept to include not only the marine aquatic system, but also the adjacent land areas that drain into it. The MCB concept has been identified primarily with semi-enclosed seas, where effects have been particularly dramatic and where the "catchment basin" retains an easily visualized geological context. However, even along open ocean coasts, hydrodynamic processes act to retain coherent masses of water, together with their contained organisms and materials, against the coast. Thus open coastal areas may exhibit MCB features similar to those of enclosed or semi-enclosed basins

Book Synopsis Alboran Sea - Ecosystems and Marine Resources by : José Carlos Báez
Download or read book Alboran Sea - Ecosystems and Marine Resources written by José Carlos Báez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-22 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alboran Sea represents a regional Mediterranean space where North and South worlds merges, creating a geopolitical region where marine resources and maritime activities should be managed from a national and international perspectives. It is widely known, that currently the planet is suffering a global change, and it is also affecting the Alboran Sea, its ecosystems and populations. An important first step to update a paramount vision on this region is to understand the climatic, geologic and oceanographic, including biochemical cycles, process which shapes the rich geodiversity, biodiversity, the productivity, and the sustainable use of the marine resources from Alboran Sea. The fisheries management system should take into account marine environmental variability to achieve biological sustainability of marine resources. Well-funded policy-makers’ decisions require a sound science based knowledge of the interaction between the marine environment and commercial stocks. This is because the role of marine environment in the evolution of fish stocks is sometimes even more important than the one played by fishers in the commercial exploitation of them. Finally, we should analyze the different aspects of political context that could affect the management of the resources from Alboran Sea in the context of climate change. This book reviews different aspects of the Alboran Sea to help understand the current situation from the original Tethis Ocean. The book is divided into four blocks: (i) Oceanographic, geological and ecological context (chapters 2 to 7), (ii) biodiversity and ecosystems distribution (chapters 8 to 12), (iii) fisheries resources and aquaculture (chapters 13 to 20), and (iv) conservation, management and marine polices (chapters 21 to 25).

This book was released on 1992 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a scientific journal like "Oecologia Aquatica" reaches its tenth issue, it is perhaps not an occasion for extraordinary celebration. However, if it turn out that this coincides with a series of unusual circunstances, then the perspective changes somewhat. Moreover, if the editors hasten to confess that this modest milestone of issue na 10 was really taken as an excuse to pay tribute to Professor Ramon Margalef, who was the founder, the first director and the driving force behind the journal, we can be forgiven for waiting to celebrate.
