Book excerpt: A new hydrodynamical interpolation technique has been developed and tested to construct a model of global ocean tides with the support of empirical tidal constants collected around the world. The discrete tide model features a 1 deg by 1 deg graded grid system in connection with a hydrodynamically defined bathymetry. The Laplace tidal equations are augmented by turbulent friction terms with novel mesh-area (latitude and depth) dependent eddy-viscosity and bottom-friction coefficients. The well-known astronomical tide-generating forces are modified by effects due to solid earth tides and ocean-tidal loading. New averaged finite differences in time are used to enhance stability characteritics and to facilitate the hydrodynamical interpolation of empirical data. This unique interpolation is accomplished by a controlled adjustment of the bottom-friction coefficient and by redefining a more physical shoreline. Extensive computer experiments were conducted to study the characteristics of the novel friction laws and hydrodynamical interpolation methods. The computed M2 tide data along with all (specially labeled) empirical constants are tabulated in map form for four typical 30 by 50 deg ocean areas. A complete tabulation and discussion of the computed M2 tide will be published in Part II of this report. It is estimated that the tabulated tidal charts permit a prediction of the M2-tide elevation of the ocean surface over the geoidal level with an accuracy of better than 5 cm anywhere in the open ocean and with somewhat less accuracy near rough shorelines.

Book Synopsis Global Ocean Tides. Part II. The Semidiurnal Principal Lunar Tide (M2), Atlas of Tidal Charts and Maps by : E. W. Schwiderski
Download or read book Global Ocean Tides. Part II. The Semidiurnal Principal Lunar Tide (M2), Atlas of Tidal Charts and Maps written by E. W. Schwiderski and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part I (Schwiderski, 1978a) of this paper, a unique hydrodynamical interpolation technique was introduced, extensively tested, and evaluated in order to compute partial global ocean tides in great detail and with a high degree of accuracy. This novel method has been applied to construct the leading semidiurnal principal lunar (M2) ocean tide with an accuracy of better than 5 cm anywhere in the open oceans. The resulting amplitudes and phases are tabulated on a 1 degree x 1 degree grid system in an atlas of 41 degrees x 71 degrees overlapping charts covering the whole oceanic globe. A corresponding atlas of global corange and cotidal maps is included to provide the reader with a quick general overview of the major tidal phenomena. The specifying hydrodynamical parameters of the model are listed along with quoted sources of empirical tide data, and significant tidal features are explained and discussed. (Author).
Book Synopsis Geodetic Features of the Ocean Surface and their Implications by : G. Seeber

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the papers which were presented at the Interdisciplinary Symposium No. 4 "Geodetic Features of the Ocean Surface and their Implications" during the XVIII. General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) in Hamburg, August 1983. The symposium was jointly sponsored by the International Associ ation of Geodesy (lAG) and the International Association for the Physi cal Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO), and was as such one further step in animpQrtant line of international and interdisciplinary symposia, re lated to the field of Marine Geodesy. Originally the term "Marine Geodesy" was widely understood as "Geodesy in the Marine Environment" and dealt primarily with two as pects: precise position determination at sea and determination of a fine structured marine geoid. However, mainly with the impact of satel lite radar altimeter measurements, a new understanding began to develop: it became evident that the field of Marine Geodesy could not be treated adequately from geodesists alone but that it needed close cooperation with related disciplines such as oceanography and marine geophysics. Symposium No. 4 at Hamburg could demonstrate that this coopera tion has already become a lively reality. The "geodetic features of the ocean surface" don't only reflect oceanographical but also marine geo physical aspects. As such scientists from geodesy, oceanography, marine geology and geophysics came together to present their ideas and to dis cuss questions of mutual interest.

Book Synopsis Oceanography from Space by : J. F. Gower
Download or read book Oceanography from Space written by J. F. Gower and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the proceedings of the COSPAR/SCOR/ IUCRM Symposium "Oceanography From Space" held in May 1980 in Venice, Italy. COSPAR (The Committee for Space Research) suggested holding a joint symposium with SCOR (The Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research) as a major review of space oceanography. Since this meeting fitted well with a series of colloquia organized by the IUCRM (The Inter-Union Commission on Radio Meteorology), these three bodies joined in sponsoring the meeting. The conference was hald 16 years after the first discussions of possible spaceborne observations of the ocean at a meeting organized in 1964 in Woods Hole. Gifford'Ewing was then keen to see oceanography benefit from the new satellite technology being developed, and he begins this volume by noting that most of the suggestions put forward in 1964 have now, at last, been successfully demonstrated in practice. The papers that follow show the variety of measurement techniques available or possible, and many of the types of studies in which they can be used. Papers are arranged in a general section, and in 6 specialized sections each of which starts with a brief introduction summarizing important results.
