Download or read book Taxonomic review of the Ornithocheirus complex (Pterosauria) from the Cretaceous of England written by Taissa Rodrigues and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toothed pterosaurs are known from England since the 19th Century, through the works of James Scott Bowerbank (1797?1877) and Richard Owen (1804?1892). Harry Govier Seeley (1839-1909) soon realized that the English pterosaurs were distinct and referred several species in the genus Ornithocheirus. The fragmentary nature of the material, competing taxonomic proposals, synonymisations, and misunderstandings, lead to a very controversial taxonomic scenario. This monograph reviews thirty species that, at some point, were referred to Ornithocheirus. From these, fourteen are considered valid and belonging to five genera, three of them new. These genera are exclusive to the Cretaceous of England. Sixteen species are deemed undiagnosable. Descriptions and illustrations of all these species are provided. For the first time, a large number of species of the Ornithocheirus complex was included in a phylogenetic analysis and it is shown that most of them comprise a newly diagnosed clade, Anhangueria, with Brazilian and Chinese taxa.

This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the discovery and analysis of animal fossils found in one of the most important paleontological sites in the world—Porcupine Cave, located at an elevation of 9,500 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. With tens of thousands of identified specimens, this site has become the key source of information on the fauna of North America's higher elevations between approximately 1 million and 600,000 years ago, a period that saw the advance and retreat of glaciers numerous times. Until now, little has been understood about how this dramatic climate change affected life during the middle Pleistocene. In addition to presenting state-of-the-art data from Porcupine Cave, this study also presents groundbreaking analysis on what the data from the site show about the evolutionary and ecological adjustments that occurred in this period, shedding light on how one of the world's most pressing environmental concerns—global climate change—can influence life on earth.

Download or read book Freshwater Fish Distribution written by Tim M. Berra and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 29,000 species, fishes are the most diverse group of vertebrates on the planet. Of that number, more than 12,000 species are found in freshwater ecosystems, which occupy less than 1 percent of the Earth’s surface and contain only 2.4 percent of plant and animal species. But, on a hectare-for-hectare basis, freshwater ecosystems are richer in species than more extensive terrestrial and marine habitats. Examination of the distribution patterns of fishes in these fresh waters reveals much about continental movements and climate changes and has long been critical to biogeographical studies and research in ecology and evolution. Tim Berra’s seminal resource, Freshwater Fish Distribution, maps the 169 fish families that swim in fresh water around the world. Each family account includes the class, subclass, and order; a pronunciation guide to the family name; life cycle information; and interesting natural history facts. Each account is illustrated, many with historical nineteenth-century woodcuts. Now available in paperback, this heavily cited work in ichthyology and biogeography will serve as a reference for students, a research support for professors, and a helpful guide to tropical fish hobbyists and anglers.
