Book Synopsis Translations In Times of Disruption by : David Hook
Download or read book Translations In Times of Disruption written by David Hook and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book throws light on the relevance and role played by translations and translators at times of serious discontinuity throughout history. Topics explored by scholars from different continents and disciplines include war, the disintegration of transnational polities, health disasters and revolutions - be they political, social, cultural and/or technological. Surprisingly little is known, for example, about the role that translated constitutions had in instigating and in shaping political crises at both a local and global level, and how these events had an effect on translations themselves. Similarly, the role that translations played as instruments for either building or undermining empires, and the extent to which interpreters could ease or hamper negotiations and foster new national identities has not been adequately acknowledged. This book addresses all these issues, among others, through twelve studies focused not just on texts but also on instances of verbal and non-verbal communications in a range of languages from around the world. This interdisciplinary work will engage scholars working in fields such as Translation Studies, History, Modern Languages, English, Law, Politics and Social Studies.

Download or read book Women's Health in Britain and America written by April Patrick and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Health in Britain and America: Texts and Contexts offers an unparalleled record of women’s health in the United Kingdom and the United States since 1750. Through chapters on pregnancy and childbirth, contraception and abortion, and breast and gynecological cancers, today’s readers can better understand historical precedents for contemporary issues. Introductory overviews present context about the history of medical care for women, such as diagnosis and treatment of specific conditions, medical advances, social and political contexts, and the effects of these on their lived experiences. The book presents a collection of primary texts including archival memoirs, letters, and diaries as well as published fiction, poetry, and medical advice. Women’s Health in Britain and America provides the necessary background for those new to the subject while also offering unique texts that will engage those already immersed in the field. As the political and social discussions around women’s bodies become more contentious and consequential, the history and the multiplicity of voices presented on these pages are more important than ever.
Book Synopsis Medical Specialisation at the London Hospital by : Michael Swash
Download or read book Medical Specialisation at the London Hospital written by Michael Swash and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of specialty skills in medical and surgical practice in the late 19th and in the 20th century transformed medical practice. For the first time, a patient could visit a doctor with the expectation of an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Disease prevention became a realistic proposition. Traditional practice methods became obsolescent, but a yearning for generalist medical wisdom and respect continued until the 2nd World War disrupted progress. In the 19th century, the London Hospital was remarkably open to new ideas, and the Chairman of the Board, Viscount Knutsford, was a master fundraiser. Investment in novel facilities and staff, including the establishment of special departments, and consequent changes in clinical practice led to a growing national and international reputation in clinical practice and education. Specialty skills defined innovations, both in hospital and family practice. More recently, merging St Bartholomew’s, the Royal London Hospital and other hospitals has reactivated the advance of specialism.
Book Synopsis Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching by : Richard Smith
Download or read book Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching written by Richard Smith and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By adopting a historical perspective, this edited collection of papers takes a fresh look at a key concept in applied linguistics, that of innovation. A substantial introduction advocates historical re-evaluation of this notion via exploration of its rise to prominence, while the ten subsequent chapters present in-depth case studies of apparently successful as well as ineffective innovation(s), from the early eighteenth to the late twentieth century. Language learning/teaching developments in Brazil, China, England, France, Germany and Italy are considered along with ‘global’ innovations in language learner lexicography, while the languages considered include Chinese, English, French, Italian, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. Various types of primary source material are utilized, illustrating the possibilities of applied linguistic historiography for both students and academics new to the field. The book questions ideas of perpetual innovation and progress, supporting the adoption of more critical perspectives on change and innovation in applied linguistics and language teaching.
