Book Synopsis Conference on Anopheline Biology and Malaria Eradication by : Ronald A. Ward
Download or read book Conference on Anopheline Biology and Malaria Eradication written by Ronald A. Ward and published by Entomological Society of America. This book was released on 1970-05-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaria control and eradication have achieved noteworthy successes in such diverse areas as Venezuela and Taiwan. However, in many portions of the world malaria control has reached a state of stagnation and even retreat. The reasons are manifold but in the main arise from problems which have been evident in the biology of the parasite and the anopheline vector. The discovery of resistance to drugs and insecticides serves to amplify these problems. Breakdowns of antimalaria programs based on vector control have been especially serious in Africa. It is not always clear why these campaigns fail or what can be done about it now. Prospects for future control may improve provided further research is accomplished. As a means of delineating the present status of the biology and control of malaria vectors and providing a platform for the discussion of areas for further study which may provide practical means of interrupting transmission by controlling or eradicating the vector, a Conference on Anopheline Biology and Malaria Eradication was organized. It is hoped that the recommendations which developed from this conference will stimulate further entomological research along those channels which appeared to be most promising to the conferees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anopheles mosquitoes are highly important insects due to their involvement in the transmission of human malaria and its devastating consequences in endemic countries worldwide. In 2010 alone, malaria was responsible for an estimated 660,000 deaths. As the study of Anopheles species and populations is a key element for reaching the goal of malaria elimination, an enormous amount of information has accumulated over the past century, and together in recent decades with the advent of novel technologies the acquisition of new knowledge has accelerated even further. The originality of this book is to offer the latest compilation on various research, new concepts, paradigms and innovative approaches for the control of anophelines using state-of-the-art methodologies and analysis. The 24 chapters, written by internationally recognized experts from 5 continents, cover the rich landscape for the understanding of Anopheles mosquitoes and the development of more effective weapons to control the vector of malaria.
Book Synopsis The Excellent Powder by : Donald Roberts
Download or read book The Excellent Powder written by Donald Roberts and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the world's most successful public health insecticide, saving millions upon millions of lives from preventable, insect-borne diseases. Yet despite decades of use and thousands of studies on its effects, DDT remains the world's most misunderstood chemical. Orchestrated, well-financed, earnest, but myth-based campaigns forced most countries to ban DDT without scientific justification. These campaigns created a climate of irrational fear and ignorant prejudice around DDT and have condemned millions of the world's most vulnerable people to death. The Excellent Powder dispels these myths and sets the record straight. It reviews the fascinating history of this chemical that changed the world. It analyzes the scientific evidence and explains how and why DDT safely protects millions from the threat of malaria and other diseases. Finally, it documents how many activists choose to ignore this evidence, and how their ignorant prejudices continues to undermine disease control programs. "DDT has been the main agent in eradicating malaria ... and of having saved at least 2 billion people in the world without causing the loss of a single life by poisoning from DDT alone." World Health Organization, 1969 "The ban on DDT, founded on erroneous or fraudulent reports . . . has caused millions of deaths ..." 7 Gordon Edwards, scientist & entomologist, 2004

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell, Tanya L. and Burkot, Thomas R. 2023. A guide to mosquitoes in the Pacific. Pacific Community, Noumea. The Pacific is home to 11.4 million people residing in 22 countries and territories across the region. Recently, the Pacific has been experiencing unprecedented outbreaks of dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus alongside ongoing malaria and lymphatic filariasis transmission with direct effects on morbidity and mortality. The ongoing transmission of mosquito-borne diseases places a heavy toll on already fragile health systems with local economic and social repercussions. This handbook provides practical and basic biological information on the behaviours and distribution of the mosquitoes of the Pacific region as they are presently known. This handbook is a foundational reference for all those working towards reducing the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases in the region. An overview of the diversity and distribution of mosquitoes throughout the Pacific, including checklists for the species present in each of the 22 Pacific Island countries and territories, is provided. For the mosquitoes that are common and/or of medical importance, one-page profiles are provided that include information about their key behaviours.
