Book excerpt: The volume provides an archive of some of the most beautiful illustrations ever made of the gravid uterus with fetus and placenta, which will serve future generations of investigators, educators, and students of reproduction. The approximately two hundred figures from over one hundred volumes included are from the late fifteenth through the nineteenth century. For each author whose work is depicted in this volume, we have used the first edition or first illustrated edition. In the commentary, each volume and illustration is placed in its historical perspective, noting both the significance of that image, but also some background on the life and work of the author. For most of the works cited, there are additional references for the reader who may wish to explore these in greater depth. This volume is a unique collection not only of these historical images, but also their place in the development of scientific study.

It is very comprehensive, up to date on the latest practices, and explains very much the "why?" we do certain things the way we do in L&D units. Pretty much explains you what the standard of care is across the board. Some of my experienced nurses also found it very useful as a refresher and ended up buying it as well. Worth the investment.” “I can see myself referring to this book often in my career.” “A must have for Mother/Baby Nurses. I think L&D RN's would benefit a lot too. I got it for the RN MNN RNC exam and so far it has been great for resource and up to date standard of care information.. good investment.”
Book Synopsis The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology by : Lawrence D. Longo
Download or read book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology written by Lawrence D. Longo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition offers an expanded and updated history of the field of fetal and neonatal development, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological aspects that contribute to the wellbeing or pathophysiology of newborns. In this concluding opus of a long and prominent career as a clinical scientist, Dr. Longo has invited new contributions from noted colleagues with expertise in various fields to provide a historical perspective on the impact of how modern concepts emerged in the field of fetal physiology and contributed to the current attention paid to the fetal origins of diseases in adults. In addition to new chapters on maternal physiology and complications during pregnancy, others trace the history of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, governmental funding of perinatal research, and major initiatives to support training in the new discipline of maternal fetal medicine, including the Reproductive Scientist Development program. The extensive survey provided by the author, who personally knew most of the pioneers in the field, offers a unique guide for all clinical and basic scientists interested in the history of – and future approaches to diagnosing and treating – pathologies that represent the leading causes of neonatal mortality and, far too often, life-long morbidity.

Book Synopsis Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring by : Wolfgang Künzel
Download or read book Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring written by Wolfgang Künzel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade fetal heart rate monitoring has become a generally ac cepted method for fetal surveillance during pregnancy and labor. Although its importance has been doubted recently, I personally feel that this method has become an important obstetric tool. It has not only improved our knowledge about fetal behavior and fetal condition throughout gesta tion, but it has especially improved fetal surveillance during labor; the most dangerous period of human life has never been as safe as nowadays. The only people who can question the advantage of fetal heart rate moni toring are those who did not experience the period before fetal heart rate monitoring was generally introduced. The first paper on the history of fetal heart rate monitoring takes us back to the beginning of fetal surveillance and provides an introduction to the different aspects of fetal observation which are covered later in this volume. Common practices of fetal surveillance in different countries are discussed, and the paths that future developments will take are suggested. An outline of the physiological aspects of fetal heart rate regulation is fol lowed by discussion of the pathophysiology with which the obstetrician is very often confronted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on Obstetric Auscultation: With an Analysis of the Evidences of Pregnancy, and an Inquiry Into the Proofs of the Life and Death of the Fetus in Utero If we for a moment consider the responsible task for medical adviser is occasionally called upon to perform, when desired to pronounce on the existence or absence of pregnancy; that peace of mind, domestic happiness, character, property, nay even life itself, may be sacrificed by inaccuracy in his diagnosis; we shall find sample reason to question, whether there be, in the broad field of medical science, any subject which more calls for the attention of the practitioner, as well from its importance as from the difficulty so frequently attending its investigation. Every medical man, at all conversant with midwifery practice, knows how often he is required to give an opinion in cases of doubtful pregnancy, by his ordinary patients, who are naturally anxious to be acquainted with their real situation; and he also well knows what dissatisfaction and want to confidence his refusal to give a decided answer on this subject frequently engenders. Book Synopsis Care of the Fetus by : Robert C. Goodlin
Download or read book Care of the Fetus written by Robert C. Goodlin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Obstetrical care of the fetus is explained to medical students, with the main emphasis placed on the fetus's well being. Traditionally, pregnancy has been viewed primarily as it affects the mother. However, throughout pregnancy the fetus has independent responses to external stimuli, nutrition, and diseases. Some studies even suggest that the fetus can be variously affected by sexual intercourse. Monitoring of fetal heart rates can suggest possible disorders and can determine if the fetus is in any immediate distress or danger. Other procedures such as aminocentesis can diagnose congenital defects in early pregnancy. Bibliography, protocols, and obstetrical data charts are included.
