Book excerpt: The expansion rate of the Universe changes with time, initially slowing (decelerating) when the universe was matter dominated, because of the mutual gravitational attraction of all the matter in it, and more recently speeding up (accelerating). A number of cosmological observations now strongly support the idea that the Universe is spatially flat (provided the dark energy density is at least approximately time independent) and is currently undergoing an accelerated cosmological expansion. A majority of cosmologists consider "dark energy" to be the cause of this observed accelerated cosmological expansion. The "standard" model of cosmology is the spatially-flat ACDM model. Although most predictions of the ACDM model are reasonably consistent with measurements, the ACDM model has some curious features. To overcome these difficulties, different Dark Energy models have been proposed. Two of these models, the XCDM parametrization and the slow rolling scalar field model [phi]CDM, along with "standard" ACDM, with the generalization of XCDM and [phi]CDM in non-flat spatial geometries are considered here and observational data are used to constrain their parameter sets. In this thesis, we start with a overview of the general theory of relativity, Friedmann's equations, and distance measures in cosmology. In the following chapters we explain how we can constrain the three above mentioned cosmological models using three data sets: measurements of the Hubble parameter H(z), Supernova (SN) apparent magnitudes, and the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak length scale, as functions of redshift z. We then discuss constraints on the deceleration-acceleration transition redshift z[subscript]d[subscript]a using unbinned and binned H(z) data. Finally, we incorporate the spatial curvature in the XCDM and [phi]CDM model and determine observational constraints on the parameters of these expanded models.

In the following chapters we use H II starburst galaxy apparent magnitude versus redshift data from Siegel et al.(2005) to constrain DE model parameters. These constraints are generally consistent with those derived using other data sets, but are not as restrictive as the tightest currently available constraints. Also we constrain above mentioned cosmological models in light of 32 age measurements of passively evolving galaxies as a function of redshift and recent estimates of the product of the cosmic microwave background acoustic scale and the baryon acoustic oscillation peak scale.

In the standard model of cosmology, this accelerated expansion is attributed to a dark energy in the form of a cosmological constant. It is conceivable, however, for the dark energy to exhibit mild dynamics (so that its energy density changes with time rather than having a constant value), or for the accelerated expansion of the Universe to be caused by some mechanism other than dark energy. In this work I will investigate both of these possibilities by using observational data to place constraints on the parameters of simple models of dynamical dark energy as well as cosmological models without dark energy. I find that these data favor the standard model while leaving some room for dynamical dark energy. The standard model also holds that the Universe is flat on large spatial scales. The same observational data used to test dark energy dynamics can be used to constrain the large-scale curvature of the Universe, and these data generally favor spatial flatness, with some mild preference for spatial curvature in some data combinations.

Book excerpt: Our understanding of cosmology, supported by different forms of observation have led to a standard model of cosmology called the $Lambda$CDM model. This model combines the idea of isotropy and homogeneity, with the presence of a cosmological constant and cold dark matter along with usual components. Additionally, it requires a special set of initial conditions, such as those that can be generated by inflation. The $Lambda$CDM model is consistent with all current data and most model parameters are known to high accuracy by combining information from CMB experiments, Galaxy surveys, supernova surveys and measurements of the Hubble Constant. However, current data cannot discriminate between a cosmological constant and other dark energy or modified gravity models that also produce a late time acceleration. Similarly, it cannot distinguish between different models that could seed the primordial perturbations. Thus, the goal of future experiments is to distinguish between such models and thereby study the differences in the underlying physics. In this thesis, we discuss the observables for dark energy models with a time dependent equation of state, and methods of constraining cosmological parameters from current data as well forecasting constraints from future experiments. We apply these methods to forecast constraints on the dark energy with a time dependent equation of state for the LSST supernova survey, and to a combination of a CMB and supernovae survey similar to PLANCK and the Dark Energy Survey. We use examine parameter constraints in a cosmology with a time dependent equation of state by combining WMAP5, SDSS, SNe, HST data sets by comparing the power spectra. We carefully quantify the differences of these constraints to those obtained by using geometrical summaries for the same data sets. We find that (a) using summary parameters instead of the full data sets give parameter constraints that are similar, but with discernible differences, (b) due to degeneracies, the constraints on the standard parameters broaden significantly for the same data sets. In particular, we find that in the context of CPL dark energy, (i) a Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum cannot be ruled out at $2sigma$ levels with our current data sets. and (ii) the SNe Ia, HST, and WMAP 5 data are not sufficient to constrain spatial curvature; we additionally require the SDSS DR4 data to achieve this. We then use large scale structure data that will be available in the future in a non-standard way to forecast the constraints on the dark energy equation of state. We argue that the shapes of cosmic voids, as measured in spectroscopic galaxy redshift surveys, constitute a promising new probe of dark energy (DE). We do this by forecasting constraints on the DE equation of state and its variation from current and future surveys and find that the promise of void shape measurements compares favorably to that of standard methods such as supernovae and cluster counts even for currently available data. Owing to the complementary nature of the constraints, void shape measurements improve the Dark Energy Task Force Figure of Merit by two orders of magnitude for a future large scale experiment such as EUCLID when combined with other probes of dark energy available on a similar time scale. Modeling several observational and theoretical systematics has only moderate effects on these forecasts. We discuss additional systematics which will require further study using simulations. Finally, we study how the experiments in the future will be able to constrain a different kind of deviation from the expectations of the standard model: a position dependent rotation of the plane of the CMB polarization after recombination. Following Kamionkowski (2008), a quadratic estimator of the rotation of the plane of polarization of the CMB is constructed. This statistic can estimate a spatially varying rotation angle $alpha(n)$. We use this estimator to quantify the prospects of detecting such a rotation field with forthcoming experiments. For PLANCK and CMBPol we find that the estimator containing the product of the $E$ and $B$ components of the polarization field is the most sensitive. The variance of this EB estimator, $N(L)$ is roughly independent of the multipole $L$, and is only weakly dependent on the instrumental beam. For FWHM of the beam size $Theta_{fwhm}sim 5'-50'$, and instrument noise $Delta_p sim 5-50 mu K$-arcmin, the scaling of variance $N(L)$ can be fitted by a power law $N(L)=3.3times 10^{-7} Delta^2_p Theta^{1.3}_{fwhm}$ deg$^2$. For small instrumental noise $Delta_p leq 5 mu K$-arcmin, the lensing B-modes become important, saturating the variance to $sim10^{-6}$deg$^2$ even for an ideal experiment. Upcoming experiments like PLANCK will be able to detect a power spectrum of the rotation angle, $C^{alpha alpha}(L)$, as small as $0.01$ deg$^2$, while futuristic experiment like CMBPol will be able to detect rotation angle power spectrum as small as $2.5 times 10^{-5}$ deg$^2$. We discuss the implications of such constraints, both for the various physical effects that can rotate the polarization as photons travel from the last scattering surface as well as for constraints on instrumental systematics that can also lead to a spurious rotation signal. Rotation of the CMB polarization generates B-modes which will act as contamination for the primordial B-modes detection. We discuss an application of our estimator to de-rotate the CMB to increase the sensitivity for the primordial B-modes.

In spite of its observational successes, the Lambda-CDM model is facing two difficulties, the cosmological constant problem and the coincidence problem. The cosmological constant problem is a discrepancy of about 120 orders of magnitude between the observed values of dark energy density and the value expected from quantum field computations. The coincidence problem relies on the observation that the energy densities of cold matter and of dark energy are currently of the same order of magnitude, although this couldhappen only during a narrow window of time in the Lambda-CDM model. A possible way to solve these two problems is to replace the cosmological constant by a dynamical form of dark energy whose density could vary in time. This thesis will be focusing on various aspects and different models of dynamical dark energy. More specifically, inchapters 2 and 3 we consider a model where dark energy and dark matter are coupled through an interaction term proportional to a power n of the dark energy density . We show that for n is equal to 3 halves, the ratio of the densities of dark energy and cold matter becomes constant at late time and thus possibly provides a solution to the coincidence problem. However, the values of the model parameters consistent with the observational constraints disfavoured this solution. In chapter 4, we consider the proposed hypothesis that the dark energy should be in thermal equilibrium with the cosmological horizon and find the form of the interaction term Q required to maintain this equilibrium. Finally in chapter 5,based on studies of particles production from vacuum energy in de Sitter spacetime, we verify under which conditions this decay could affect the probability distribution of the values of the cosmological constant obtained from a modified version of the anthropic principle, the causal entropic principle." --

We derive a set of constraints on the nature of the dark energy assuming a flat Universe. By including constraints on ([Omega]{sub M}, w) from baryon acoustic oscillations, we obtain a value for a static equation-of-state parameter w = -1.05{sub -0.12}{sup +0.13} (stat 1[sigma]) ± 0.13 (sys) and [Omega]{sub M} = 0.274{sub -0.020}{sup +0.033} (stat 1[sigma]) with a best-fit [chi]2/DoF of 0.96. These results are consistent with those reported by the Super-Nova Legacy Survey in a similar program measuring supernova distances and redshifts. We evaluate sources of systematic error that afflict supernova observations and present Monte Carlo simulations that explore these effects. Currently, the largest systematic currently with the potential to affect our measurements is the treatment of extinction due to dust in the supernova host galaxies. Combining our set of ESSENCE SNe Ia with the SuperNova Legacy Survey SNe Ia, we obtain a joint constraint of w = -1.07{sub -0.09}{sup +0.09} (stat 1[sigma]) ± 0.13 (sys), [Omega]{sub M} = 0.267{sub -0.018}{sup +0.028} (stat 1[sigma]) with a best-fit [chi]2/DoF of 0.91. The current SNe Ia data are fully consistent with a cosmological constant.

Book excerpt: Modern concordance cosmology is faced with two tasks: Accounting for the abundance of the known constituents, and determining the nature of the unknown components - dark matter and dark energy. The initial conditions which led to structure formation pose another important question. This work studies the potential of weak gravitational lensing to determine the nature of dark energy through its equation of state and its evolution, and to advance our understanding of the distribution of the primordial density fluctuations. We show how a future all-sky tomographic weak lensing survey in conjunction with expected results from CMB anisotropy probes could provide constraints on the dark energy equation of state as well as neutrino and primordial power spectrum parameters. We also examine how the parameter precision depends on the cosmological model used in our calculations, and discuss the significance of our results to survey optimisation. This work should be helpful to astrophysicists working in the field of weak lensing, and to the wider community of observational cosmologists.

Book excerpt: To the eyes of the average person and the trained scientist, the night sky is dark, even though the universe is populated by myriads of bright galaxies. Why this happens is a question commonly called Olbers'' Paradox, and dates from at least 1823. How dark is the night sky is a question which preoccupies astrophysicists at the present. The answer to both questions tells us about the origin of the universe and the nature of its contents OCo luminous galaxies like the Milky Way, plus the dark matter between them and the mysterious dark energy which appears to be pushing everything apart. In this book, the fascinating history of Olbers'' Paradox is reviewed, and the intricate physics of the light/dark universe is examined in detail. The fact that the night sky is dark (a basic astronomical observation that anybody can make) turns out to be connected with the finite age of the universe, thereby confirming some event like the Big Bang. But the space between the galaxies is not perfectly black, and data on its murkiness at various wavelengths can be used to constrain and identify its unseen constituents.
