Book Synopsis Contemplating the Future of Moral Theology by : Robert C. Koerpel

This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Brian V. Johnstone, CSsR, has been quietly and unobtrusively contributing to the intellectual life of Catholicism, especially in the field of moral theology, for nearly four decades. Having published numerous theological articles on many topics, including biomedical ethics, peace and war, and fundamental moral theology, and directed many doctoral dissertations, it is no exaggeration to say that he has dedicated his entire life to teaching and writing theology. In honor of Johnstone's work, this felicitation volume covers a wide range of themes in the Christian moral life with original articles written by internationally recognized theologians. In the spirit of Johnstone's thought and work, each article challenges the reader to reflect upon the present while contemplating the future of moral theology.

Book Synopsis Christian Spirituality in the Catholic Tradition by : Jordan Aumann
Download or read book Christian Spirituality in the Catholic Tradition written by Jordan Aumann and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history not only serves to acquaint us with the origins and development of Christian spirituality, but, equally importantly in the author's view, projects into our contemporary world the lives and teachings of men and women who have reached a high degree of sanctity through the ages. His study is Catholic in both senses of the word. He has concentrated his attention on the history of spirituality in the Roman Catholic Church; and he has taken a comprehensive view of the full range of forms of that Catholic tradition, including -- so that we can learn from the mistakes of the past -- the heterodox tendencies and movements that have arisen from time to time.

Each week there are opening and closing prayers, a commentary on the Sunday readings, faith sharing questions for reflection, suggestions for living as a disciple, and a brief life of a saint for inspiration. Pope Francis tells us that at the basis of everything is the word of God, which during the season of Lent we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply. Disciples on the Journey can help the Lenten Scriptures proclaimed each Sunday come alive because we have prepared ourselves by prayer and reflection to hear God's Word.
Book Synopsis Playing in the Cathedral by : Jesús A. Ramos-Kittrell
Download or read book Playing in the Cathedral written by Jesús A. Ramos-Kittrell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Spanish colonial America, limpieza de sangre (literally, "purity of blood") determined an individual's status within the complex system of social hierarchy called casta. Within this socially stratified culture, those individuals at the top were considered to have the highest calidad-an all-encompassing estimation of a person's social status. At the top of the social pyramid were the Peninsulares: Spaniards born in Spain, who controlled most of the positions of power within the colonial governments and institutions. Making up most of the middle-class were criollos, locally born people of Spanish ancestry. During the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Peninsulare intellectuals asserted their cultural superiority over criollos by claiming that American Spaniards had a generally lower calidad because of their "impure" racial lineage. Still, given their Spanish heritage, criollos were allowed employment at many Spanish institutions in New Spain, including the center of Spanish religious practice in colonial America: Mexico City Cathedral. Indeed, most of the cathedral employees-in particular, musicians-were middle-class criollos. In Playing in the Cathedral, author Jesús Ramos-Kittrell explores how liturgical musicians-choristers and instrumentalists, as well as teachers and directors-at Mexico City Cathedral in the mid-eighteenth century navigated changing discourses about social status and racial purity. He argues that criollos cathedral musicians, influenced by Enlightenment values of self-industry and autonomy, fought against the Peninsulare-dominated, racialized casta system. Drawing on extensive archival research, Ramos-Kittrell shows that these musicians held up their musical training and knowledge, as well as their institutional affiliation with the cathedral, as characteristics that legitimized their calidad and aided their social advancement. The cathedral musicians invoked claims of "decency" and erudition in asserting their social worth, arguing that their performance capabilities and theoretical knowledge of counterpoint bespoke their calidad and status as hombres decentes. Ultimately, Ramos-Kittrell argues that music, as a performative and theoretical activity, was a highly dynamic factor in the cultural and religious life of New Spain, and an active agent in the changing discourses of social status and "Spanishness" in colonial America. Offering unique and fascinating insights into the social, institutional, and artistic spheres in New Spain, this book is a welcome addition to scholars and graduate students with particular interests in Latin American colonial music and cultural history, as well as those interested in the intersections of music and religion.

Book Synopsis Deliver us from the Evil one by : Bernardo Olivera
Download or read book Deliver us from the Evil one written by Bernardo Olivera and published by Talita Kum Ediciones. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these pages Bernardo Olivera helps us to discern and recognize how the devil can act in our life and what kind of influence he can have. What is the relationship between Satan and the spiritual combat implied in our own journey to union with God? This book brings together the advice of the principal spiritual masters who have treated the subject with the realism that comes from their own experience of the devil's worst temptations, such as the laziness, bitterness and indifference that comes from the vice of acedia. The call is not to fight Satan directly, but to persevere in the humility and patience of Christ.
Book Synopsis Reforming Reformation by : Thomas F. Mayer
Download or read book Reforming Reformation written by Thomas F. Mayer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation used to be singular: a unique event that happened within a tidily circumscribed period of time, in a tightly constrained area and largely because of a single individual. Few students of early modern Europe would now accept this view. Offering a broad overview of current scholarly thinking, this collection undertakes a fundamental rethinking of the many and varied meanings of the term concept and label 'reformation', particularly with regard to the Catholic Church. Accepting the idea of the Reformation as a process or set of processes that cropped up just about anywhere Europeans might be found, the volume explores the consequences of this through an interdisciplinary approach, with contributions from literature, art history, theology and history. By examining a single topic from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives, the volume avoids inadvertently reinforcing disciplinary logic, a common result of the way knowledge has been institutionalized and compartmentalized in research universities over the last century. The result of this is a much more nuanced view of Catholic Reformation, and once that extends consideration much further - both chronologically, geographically and politically - than is often accepted. As such the volume will prove essential reading to anyone interested in early modern religious history.
