Sus comedias plantean situaciones típicas o descabelladas, personajes prototípicos, chistes groseros, equívocos, enredos y todo un arsenal de recursos escénicos destinados a suscitar risotadas inmediatas, algunos de los cuales las convierten en comedias musicales. Plauto es un maestro en el uso del lenguaje coloquial, y no se abstiene de incurrir en obscenidades y groserías. Es un fino psicólogo que revitaliza los personajes de las comedias griegas: jóvenes calaveras, prostitutas, alcahuetas, traficantes de esclavos, viejos verdes, parásitos, soldados fanfarrones, etc. El genio de Plauto consiste en el juego constante que mantiene con el público acerca de la realidad y la ilusión, en su capacidad de extraer todas las posibilidades de las situaciones y los personajes, en la variedad de registros lingüísticos que usa con absoluto desparpajo y maestría. Este segundo volumen contiene La comedia de Asquilla (en estado fragmentario, obra de infidelidades, nacimientos secretos y desvelamientos), Gorgojo (sobre los amoríos de dos jóvenes obstaculizados por un viejo y achacoso rufián, y los intentos de los primeros por desembarazarse del segundo con la asistencia de un gorrón), Epídico (de intrincada trama, acerca de equívocos sobre hijas y amantes, amos y esclavos, viejos y jóvenes), Los dos Menecmos (desternillante pieza de equívocos sobre dos hermanos gemelos, uno desaparecido, el otro confundido con él por una cortesana, la esposa, el suegro...), El mercader (menos cómica y más lacrimógena de lo que es habitual en Plauto, sobre la conversión de una esclava en amante), El militar fanfarrón (comedia bufa sobre el Miles gloriosus grotesco en sus presunciones ridículas, el joven galán, la esclava atada al viejo), La comedia del fantasma (en que un joven despilfarra el patrimonio de su padre, ausente en viaje de negocios, y el esclavo del primero trata por todos los medios de que el segundo no se entere) y El persa (una suerte de sainete, de trama simple y trivial, pero amable y divertida, acerca de liberaciones de esclavas y engaños a rufianes).

Book excerpt: The Spanish Moriscos, Muslims forcibly converted to Christianity, were expelled by Philip III between 1609 and 1614. Subsequently, writers known as Catholic Apologists wrote justifying the event. Pedro de Valencia, humanist, biblical scholar, jurist and royal Chronicler, condemned expulsion. Both Apologists and Pedro de Valencia made their case by invoking Divine Providence: the former contended that millenarian prophecies and apocalyptic visions were signs of divine warning beforehand and of approval afterwards; Valencia urged Philip III to act as a shepherd king, arguing that Divine Providence would punish monarchs who put political expediency before moral rectitude. Drawing on unpublished source material, the book juxtaposes the ideals of Valencia, a Christian humanist, with the bigotry, superstition and racism of the Apologists.
