Book Synopsis The Mexican Revolution on the World Stage by : Adela Pineda Franco
Download or read book The Mexican Revolution on the World Stage written by Adela Pineda Franco and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the wide-ranging impact of the Mexican Revolution on global cinema and Western intellectual thought. The first major social revolution of the twentieth century, the Mexican Revolution was visually documented in technologically novel ways and to an unprecedented degree during its initial armed phase (1910–21) and the subsequent years of reconstruction (1921–40). Offering a sweeping and compelling new account of this iconic revolution, The Mexican Revolution on the World Stage reveals its profound impact on both global cinema and intellectual thought in and beyond Mexico. Focusing on the period from 1940 to 1970, Adela Pineda Franco examines a group of North American, European, and Latin American filmmakers and intellectuals who mined this extensive visual archive to produce politically engaged cinematic works that also reflect and respond to their own sociohistorical contexts. The author weaves together multilayered analysis of individual films, the history of their production and reception, and broader intellectual developments to illuminate the complex relationship between culture and revolution at the onset of World War II, during the Cold War, and amid the anti-systemic movements agitating Latin America in the 1960s. Ambitious in scope, this book charts an innovative transnational history of not only the visual representation but also the very idea of revolution. Adela Pineda Franco is Professor of Latin American Literature and Film at Boston University. She is the coeditor (with Jaime Marroquin Arredondo and Magdalena Mieri) of Open Borders to a Revolution: Culture, Politics, and Migration.

Book Synopsis Daniel Cosío Villegas: by : James W. Wilkie

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Cataloging beyond the Notes: Annotating Bibliographic Records for Music Effectively in RDA by : Ralph Hartsock
Download or read book Cataloging beyond the Notes: Annotating Bibliographic Records for Music Effectively in RDA written by Ralph Hartsock and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-06 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cataloging beyond the Notes: Annotating Bibliographic Records for Music Effectively in RDA, authors Ralph Hartsock and Peter Lisius present examples illustrating the effective use of notes in the description of music, and this is especially important with RDA. Since RDA has increased granularity in the description of music, whether in score, recording, video, or data formats, the expert direction offered in Cataloging beyond the Notes makes it a key reference for music cataloging. Bibliographic records are presented using MARC21. An essential resource for practicing music catalogers, Cataloging beyond the Notes begins with a comprehensive introduction, including instructions on how to use the book, and presents examples of the granular data that informs users about specific details. In addition, the examples are augmented by the authors’ commentary, so that the result is expert guidance in a single, highly accessible publication. More than that, navigation to and from the newer RDA format is facilitated by an appendix keyed to specific RDA details. Frequently used and related terms are also covered in a glossary specific to this volume. Taken as a whole, Cataloging beyond the Notes belongs in every music library and on each cataloger’s desk.

Book Synopsis Gregory Palamas and the Making of Palamism in the Modern Age by : Norman Russell
Download or read book Gregory Palamas and the Making of Palamism in the Modern Age written by Norman Russell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth-century Greek hesychast and controversialist, Gregory Palamas, has been so successfully cast as 'the other' in Western theological discourse that it can be difficult to gain a sympathetic hearing for him. In the first part of this book, Norman Russell traces the historical reception of Palamite thought in Orthodoxy and in the West, and investigates how 'Palamism' was constructed in the early twentieth century by both Western and Eastern theologians (principally Martin Jugie and John Meyendorff) for polemical or apologetic purposes. Russell argues that we need to go behind these ideological constructions in order to gain a true perception of the teaching of Gregory Palamas. In his recent survey of Palamite scholarship, Robert Sinkewicz noted that it is now time to raise the larger questions. The second part of the book attempts to do this, following the contours of Palamas' thinking in three areas: his relationship to tradition, his philosophy, and his theology. Russell shows that Palamite thought, when freed of misunderstanding and misrepresentation, has the potential to enrich our understanding of divine-human communion. This study contributes to the changing paradigm of scholarship on Palamas, nudging it towards the point at which Palamite thought can be used fruitfully by contemporary Western and Eastern theologians without the need to subscribe to what has been regarded as 'Palamism'.

Download or read book Chaos and Cosmos written by Martín Plot and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos and Cosmos offers a new and unique interpretation of Argentine essayist and fiction writer Jorge Luis Borges as a thinker of what continental twentieth century political theory called the political. While not a political writer in the traditional sense, Borges was indeed an author whose response to the advent of totalitarianism, in particular in its Nazi form, generated the most experimental, insightful, and rigorous short fiction and non-fiction political interrogation. As is well known, Borges’ writing went beyond originality; it created a genre of its own, and the Borgesian style is not limited to form. This Borgesian style fundamentally relates to how his response to the advent of totalitarianism led to sharp and philosophically sophisticated interrogations-in-fiction of the political, understood in this book as related to three main distinctive dimensions: that of the question of the forms of society, that of the relationship between the imaginary and the real, and that of the relationship between the same and the other. Chaos and Cosmos introduces the reader to Borges as an experimental writer, as an Argentine citizen, as a thinker of global political phenomena, and as a South American Pragmatist. The book also makes incursions in a political theorizing of its own, intertwining an interpretation of Borges’ essays and fiction pieces from the 1930s and 1940s with the central concerns of philosophers and political thinkers such as William James, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Hannah Arendt, Claude Lefort, Michael Foucault, Richard Rorty, and Judith Butler.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2003 (see also Studia Patristica 39, 41, 42 and 43). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.
