Book excerpt: -- Published to coincide with a major exhibition. -- Examines in depth the historical background of each designer and firm, their styles and techniques. This introduction to the most innovative period of goth century glass-making was published to coincide with The Art of Glass - Art Nouveau to Art Deco exhibition at the Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery. The fascinating history of art glass in this Period begins in the 1880's with the precursors to Art Nouveau, follows the creations of Galle, Daum and Muller Freres. It continues with the development of opalescent, frosted and clear molded glass -- especially Lalique, Art Deco, functionalism, Orrefors and English and Scottish glass. But it is above all the glass itself, beautifully reproduced in full color, that brings to life one of the most exciting and creative periods in the history of art glass.

Book excerpt: Jean Starobinski, one of Europe's foremost literary critics, examines the life that led Rousseau, who so passionately sought open, transparent communication with others, to accept and even foster obstacles that permitted him to withdraw into himself. First published in France in 1958, "Jean-Jacques Rousseau" remains Starobinski's most important achievement and, arguably, the most comprehensive book ever written on Rousseau. The text has been extensively revised for this edition and is published here along with seven essays on Rousseau that appeared between 1962 and 1970.

Book excerpt: Andre Vachon is clearly traditional in his choice of theme, selection of material, and the historical methods that he adopts. He expounds an older interpretation that accounted for the expansion of New France in terms of missionary zeal, the geographic imperative, economic necessity, and military security. Nothing is said that reflects the historical revisionism of the last two decades with its emphasis on self-interest and the personal pecuniary motive. The heroes are familiar: Cartier, Champlain, Talon, and Laval, but not Frontenac. The author raises no serious doubts about the desire on the part of these individuals for the expansion of New France, but he is forced to admit that by 1700 the colony had become too big and too fragile. Hardly a soul is criticized in the entire text. The general reader might be amused by knowing how cunning Amerindians duped Jacques Cartier or that Champlain never learned an Indian language and judged their conduct by the standards of French law rather than according to native customs he could never appreciate. ..."-- from review by T.A. Crowley ://journals.sfu.ca/archivar/index.php/archivaria/article/view/12657/13822.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the issues of collecting, consuming, classifying and describing the curiosities, antiques and objets d'art that proliferated in French literary texts during the last decades of the nineteenth century. After Balzac made such issues significant in canonical literature, the Goncourt brothers, Huysmans, Mallarmé and Maupassant celebrated their golden age. Flaubert and Zola scorned them. Rachilde and Lorrain perverted them. Proust commemorated their last moments of glory. Focusing on the bibelot (the modern French term for knick-knack, curiosity or other collectible), Janell Watson shows how the sudden prominence given to curiosities and collecting in nineteenth-century literature signals a massive change in attitudes to the world of goods, which in turn restructured the literary text according to the practical logic of daily life, calling into question established scholarly notions of order. Her study makes an important contribution to the literary history of material culture.

Book excerpt: "L'art nouveau, an artistic movement of a highly eclectic nature that developed in the late 19th century, took its lead from such diverse sources as Japanese art or the medieval revivalism of the Arts and Crafts. Perhaps in no medium was it better represented than in pottery, whose technical possibilities allowed for great freedom of expression. This richly illustrated dictionary, with glossary and select signatures, lists over 1,100 artists, ceramists and firms that participated in the creation of Art Nouveau ceramics in France, the melting pot of die new aesthetic."--Page 4 of cover.
