Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kansas State University conducted a study to identify and evaluate potential alternatives for marking narrow bridges. Based on the results of the literature review, the surveys of current practices and the field observations, several alternative signing strategies for low volume bridges were formulated. These alternatives include: 1) do not use object markers on low volume roadways, 2) reduce the height of object markers on low volume roadways, 3) stagger the object markers on low volume roadways, 4) use flexible sign supports, 5) use removable object markers, and 6) redesign the object marker and/or support. Implementation of such practices statewide could result in substantial cost savings to the highway agencies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Download or read book Low-Volume Roads Engineering - Best Management Practices Field Guide written by Gordon Keller and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Low-Volume Roads Engineering Best Management Practices Field Guide is intended to provide an overview of the key planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance aspects of roads that can cause adverse environmental impacts and to list key ways to prevent those impacts. Best Management Practices are general techniques or design practices that, when applied and adapted to fit site-specific conditions, will prevent or reduce pollution and maintain water quality. BMPs for roads have been developed by many agencies since roads often have a major adverse impact on water quality, and most of those impacts are preventable with good engineering and management practices. Roads that are not well planned or located, not properly designed or constructed, not well maintained, or not made with durable materials often have negative effects on water quality and the environment.

Book excerpt: "The 2009 AASHTO Transportation Glossary is an update and revision of the 1983 Transportation Glossary and the 1998 Transportation Glossary, which was unpublished. The largest additions in terminology were in bridge and drainage subjects. The new Glossary also includes lists of organizational acronyms, abbreviations, and other glossary references. Terms and definitions in this glossary were taken from an unpublished 1998 AASHTO Glossary and supplemented with definitions listed in AASHTO publications issued after 1998. Several additional sources were also referenced, including the Highway Capacity Manual, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Code of Federal Regulations-Title 23, an FHWA list of roundabout terminology, and the Transportation Research Thesaurus. Glossary terms are listed in alphabetical order regardless of transportation mode. However, the glossary also includes two indexes-subject area and keyword-which provide cross references for the user."--AASHTO Bookstore website (viewed June 24, 2.
