For this research project, the quantitative study used secondary data collected from the California Health Interview Survey 2015 (CHIS 2015), Adult Survey. The total number of samples in this study was 21,034 adults (18 years or older) with the mean age of 53.11 years old. Bivariate analyses (chi-square test and simple logistic regression) explored the relationship between the independent (race, health behaviors, gender, and socioeconomic status) and dependent variable (obesity). Results revealed that Hispanics, when compared to Non-Hispanic Whites, had higher rates of obesity indicating a statistically significant relationship between ethnicity and obesity. When examining whether obesity was more prevalent by gender, there was no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of obesity between men and women. The study also found an association between a person's educational attainment and the prevalence of obesity, stating that as education decreased, the study found obesity rates to increase. Lastly, those who incorporated physical activity would experience a lower chance of becoming obese. Overall, it is vital for professionals to create objectives that are practical and more realistic when it comes to reducing obesity. Focusing on public policies that cater to specific individuals who are more likely to become obese due to their race, gender, or social status could help promote change and encourage equal opportunities that strive towards healthy behaviors to reduce this public health crisis.
