Book Synopsis Caring for the Sick and Elderly by : Marie Roccapriore
Download or read book Caring for the Sick and Elderly written by Marie Roccapriore and published by Twenty-Third Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the various ways pastoral care ministers and parish volunteers can reach out to the sick and elderly. There are a wealth of ideas here for extending spiritual, sacramental, and charitable support to parishioners who are homebound, in nursing homes, or in hospitals. For many years, Sr. Marie Roccapriore has been involved with a parish program called Project H.E.A.L.--Homebound are Encouraged through Assistance in Love. The details of this program are provided in this book, along with forms and other reproducible information that will be useful in developing this type of program in your own parish. Also included is an extensive listing of resources that are invaluable for ministry with the sick and elderly. The creative ideas offered will motivate more involvement among children as well as adults, and bring positive results among the sick and elderly recipients who eagerly look forward to the compassionate and loving care of others. Personal examples and anecdotes help illustrate the ways that even the simplest gestures of care and concern can make a world of difference in the lives of the infirm.
Download or read book Stand written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Contributions by John Piper, John MacArthur, Jerry Bridges, Randy Alcorn, and Helen Roseveare These powerful calls to godly perseverance from four admired Christians elevate the value and necessity of lifelong faithfulness in the lives of God's people. Many people seek to better their lives by leaving, changing, swapping, or modifying their commitments. But God's Word holds up a beautiful value that, while difficult, leads to deep satisfaction and great reward: endurance. Such long, steady, hold-the-course perseverance is especially needed within our vacillating generation. This thoughtful book thus not only elevates the virtue of godly endurance but bears witness to its power in the Christian life through the exhortations of John Piper-who provides the context and overview for the entire book-John MacArthur, Jerry Bridges, Randy Alcorn, and Helen Roseveare. Each contributor represents a different kind of endurance: from MacArthur's longtime, faithful shepherding of a church to Alcorn's radical obedience in the culture wars, from Bridges' unswerving patience through suffering to Roseveare's courageous constancy on the war-torn mission field. Stand will awaken and solidify rugged, Christ-exalting endurance in people who are weary in their faith journey or who simply long to remain firm to the end. And for everyone who dreams of a Christian culture-shift from brief trial runs to lifelong commitments, John Piper and Justin Taylor's latest offering is a watershed that will serve to seal that vision in people's minds and hearts.

Book Synopsis Let's Begin With Prayer by : Mitch Finley
Download or read book Let's Begin With Prayer written by Mitch Finley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let's begin with prayer." Whether spoken by a student, teacher, or principal, these words signal the beginning of the school day in many Catholic schools. The quesÂtion is, what comes next? Let's Begin With Prayer offers an eloquent and practical answer. 130 brief prayers specifically designed for use in Catholic junior and senior high schools are offered here, prayers that are grounded in the Catholic tradition while reflecting the concerns of today's Catholic school community. The prayers are divided into three sections. "Prayers for Holy Days and Holidays" are for the days that regularly appear on our calendars, from saints' days to national holidays. "Prayers for Special Days" address special events in the school community. Here, you'll find everything from a prayer "To Welcome New Students" to a prayer "Before a Championship Game." Of special interest here is a section of prayers for difficult occasions, such as the death of a classmate. A third section, "Prayers for Ordinary Days," offers possibilities for the average day, which is the biggest part of school life. Included here are prayers for development of Christian character, prayers for specific groups within the school community, and prayers for larger world concerns. A final section offers six full prayer services. These brief but meaningful services for occasions such as the beginning and end of the school year provide a way to gather students together for more focused attention to the spiritual dimension. Let's Begin With Prayer will be a welcome resource for anyone attempting to inÂcorporate regular, meaningful prayer into the hubbub of Catholic school life in Catholic junior and senior high schools.

Book Synopsis Gendering War and Peace in the Gospel of Luke by : Caryn A. Reeder
Download or read book Gendering War and Peace in the Gospel of Luke written by Caryn A. Reeder and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Caryn A. Reeder examines the gendered language and imagery of war and peace in the Gospel of Luke. Peace is represented with the blessing of fertility, pregnancy, and newborn infants. Pregnant and nursing women, women and children in general, and feminized Jerusalem also represent the horrors of war in the Gospel - abandoned, crushed to the ground, subject to woe and distress, to the point that barren wombs and dry breasts become a blessing. Reeder argues that the representation of peace with pregnant women and newborn infants, the most vulnerable in the population, indicates that victory belongs to God. This message is clarified by the encouragement of surrender and flight from besieged Jerusalem, rather than an active defense. Notably, there are no men to defend Jerusalem in Luke's warnings of war. The Gospel undermines the masculinization of war commonly found in Greco-Roman texts by redirecting the means of making peace from the violence of victory to the unmanly act of surrender.
