Dazu leistet dieser Tagungsband einen Beitrag, indem er Erkenntnisse verschiedener Disziplinen aufzeigt, die eine fundierte und nachhaltige Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verhältnis des Menschen zur und den Auswirkungen menschlichen Verhaltens auf die Biodiversität eröffnen. The conference “Biodiversity and Society” discussed topics of biodiversity research from the perspective of social sciences and humanities. The inclusion of these perspectives in the until now scientifically orientated biodiversity research is necessary for the definition of conservation goals and value standards, as well as for the development of instruments for the preservation and use of biodiversity. Since the instruments in particular are applied in complex social, economic and legal contexts, these societal conditions should be considered. This proceedings volume presents findings of multiple disciplines and thereby contributes to an integral and fruitful analysis of the human relation to and influence on biodiversity.

Book excerpt: In view of the Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection of the European Commission and the draft of the European Soil Protection Framework Directive, a symposium on the topic «Strategies for legislating soil protection in the European Union» was held in March 2007 at the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin. At the centre of the symposium were reports on EU thematic soil protection strategies and the soil protection framework presented in the draft by six different European countries (Spain, Poland, Finland, Denmark, Austria, and Germany), providing an overview of the state of soil protection laws in these member states. The conference transcript includes these individual reports as well as the symposium's most important findings. Ausgehend von der thematischen Bodenschutzstrategie der EU und der im Entwurf vorliegenden Bodenschutz-Rahmenrichtlinie hat im März 2007 an der Technischen Universität Berlin ein Symposium unter dem Thema «Strategien für den gesetzlichen Bodenschutz in der Europäischen Union» stattgefunden. The problems are exacerbated through drought in many parts of the world. First officially formulated at the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, they have been restated or expanded since then. The UN Millennium Declaration of 2000 transformed general guidelines into specific targets. Based on the collective inputs of 23 United Nations agencies and convention secretariats, this Report offers a global overview of the state of the world's freshwater resources. It is part of an on-going assessment process to develop policies and help with their implementation as well as to measure any progress towards achieving sustainable use of water resources. Generously illustrated with more than 25 full-color global maps and numerous figures, the report reviews progress and trends and presents seven pilot case studies of river basins representing various social, economic and environmental settings: Lake Titicaca (Bolivia, Peru); Senegal river basin (Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Guinea); Seine Normandy (France); Lake Peipsi/Chudskoe (Estonia, Russia); Ruhuna basin (Sri Lanka); Greater Tokyo region (Japan); and Chao Phraya (Thailand). It assesses progress in 11 challenge areas, including health, food, environment, shared water resources, cities, industry, energy, risk management, knowledge, valuing water and governance. Proposing methodologies and indicators for measuring sustainability, it lays the foundations for regular, system-wide monitoring and reporting by the UN, together with the development of standardized methodologies and data.
