The adverse effects of micronutrient deficiencies are profound and include premature death, poor health, blindness, growth stunting, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and low work capacity. Preventing Micronutrient Deficiencies provides a conceptual framework based on past experience that will allow funders to tailor programs to existing regional/country capabilities and to incorporate within these programs the capacity to address multiple strategies (i.e., supplementation/fortification/food-based approaches/public health measures) and multiple micronutrient deficiencies. The book does not offer recommendations on how to alleviate specific micronutrient deficienciesâ€"such recommendations are already available through the publications of diverse organizations, including the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Micronutrient Initiative, World Bank, United Nations Childrens' Fund, and the World Health Organization. Instead, this volume examines key elements in the design and implementation of micronutrient interventions, including such issues as: The importance of iron, vitamin A, and iodine to health. Populations at risk for micronutrient deficiency. Options for successful interventions and their cost. The feasibility of involving societal sectors in the planning and implementation of interventions. Characteristics of successful interventions. The book also contains three in-depth background papers that address the prevention of deficiencies of iron, vitamin A, and iodine.

Book excerpt: India is home to millions of undernourished children; however, little is known about the extent of undernutrition and its multiple determinants at the district level. POSHAN has generated District Nutrition Profiles (DNPs) for the 640 districts of India, with the aim of creating awareness, facilitating evidence-based discussions, and mobilizing action for nutrition at the district level. These 4 page profiles present a snapshot of the state of nutrition and its multiple determinants in each district. They were conceptualized to enable local leaders and civil society to understand what it takes to effectively tackle undernutrition in their communities. Data on the nutritional status of children in India is often only available at the national and state levels, with very little data present at the district level. So, this series is a step towards bridging this knowledge gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book revisits the causes of persisting under nutrition in India, but moves away from the usual focus on women and children to a broader view of the entire population. It estimates the economic losses resulting from ignoring under nutrition in the adult working population and questions the current narrow focus of nutrition interventions, suggesting that a family-based approach may provide quicker results and long-term sustainability. It compares the best and worst performing states in the country to glean learnings from both successes and failures and emphasizes the need to hand over the ownership of nutrition outcomes from the state to the community and family for more sustainable results. The book is organized in three sections: Part 1 details the nutrition status of the population, regional variations in nutrition outcomes and government response in terms of interventions. Part 2 reviews issues and concerns like gender discrimination, poor child nutrition status, ineffective implementation of government programmes in the field and the possible impacts of emerging issues like climate change. Part 3 seeks solutions from both international and country experiences.

Book excerpt: While India has experienced rapid economic development during the last few decades, the prevalence of undernutrition remains high and the prevalence of overnutrition is increasing, creating a "double burden". This trend is observed not only among the adult population of India, but also among the children of India. The National Family Health Surveys (NFHS), starting in 1992 and conducted every five years, collects nutritional data on participants and was used to address the question of which socioeconomic factors influence childhood nutritional status and whether or not these factors differ by state and wealth of different regions in India. To achieve this objective, the NFHS II data from 1998-1999 were studied using multiple linear regression analysis to predict child nutritional status for those under two years of age. Weight-for-height z-score (WHZ) was positively associated with Body Mass Index (BMI) and household standard of living, and an inverse relationship with respondent's age. Height-for-age z-score (HAZ) was positively associated with years lived in place of residence, education level, BMI, and household standard of living and an inverse relationship with respondent's age and type of employment. Analyses by region (West, South, North, Northeast, East, and Central) showed that the association between the socioeconomic factors with WHZ and HAZ among stunted, wasted, and overweight children varied among the six regions. In the wealthier regions, respondent's age, place of residence, and years lived in residence are significant predictors. In the less wealthy regions, respondent's ethnicity and employment are significant predictors. In conclusion, when assessing the nutritional status of children within the country of India, the association between socioeconomic factors with child WHZ and HAZ varies by region.
