Book excerpt: Nutrient availability directly affects how well plants grow and produce. A sufficient supply of all nutrients is critical to nutrient management and sustainability. If a single essential element is below the critical level for availability, crop growth and yield will fall even if the other elements are in sufficient supply. Concern for nutrient sufficiency is often confined to N, P, and K because they are needed in relatively large amounts by crops and are most often the limiting factors in crop production. However, nutrient insufficiency can go beyond N, P, and K.A balance of a sufficient supply of nutrients is a key component to profitability. Plant nutrients interact positively when properly balanced. For example, in the case of N fertilization, a shortage of another nutrient could decrease N uptake, reduce N use efficiency and returns on investment, and increase the potential for N loss ...

Beginning with an overview of the fundamental principles and understanding of citrus biology and behavior, the book provides a comprehensive view from Citrus evolution to current market importance. Reporting on new insights supported by the elucidation of the citrus genome sequence, it presents groundbreaking theories and fills in previous knowledge gaps. Because citrus is among the most difficult plants to improve through traditional breeding, citrus researchers, institutions and industries must quickly learn to adapt to new developments, knowledge and technologies to address the biological constraints of a unique fruit-tree such as citrus. Despite the challenges of working with citrus, tremendous progress has been made, mostly through advances in molecular biology and genomics. This book is valuable for all those involved with researching and advancing, producing, processing, and delivering citrus products. Includes the most current research on citrus genomic information Provides the first detailed description of citrus origin, a new proposal for citrus taxonomy, and a redefinition of the genus Citrus Details citrus challenges including climate change, global disease impacts, and plant improvement strategies

Book excerpt: Soil fertility refers to the ability of a soil to supply plant nutrients. Bioavailable phosphorus is the element in soil that is most often lacking. Nitrogen and potassium are also needed in substantial amounts. For this reason these three elements are always identified on a commercial fertilizer analysis. For example a 10-10-15 fertilizer has 10 percent nitrogen. Inorganic fertilizers are generally less expensive and have higher concentrations of nutrients than organic fertilizers. Also, since nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium generally must be in the inorganic forms to be taken up by plants, inorganic fertilizers are generally immediately bioavailable to plants without modification. However, some have criticized the use of inorganic fertilizers, claiming that the water-soluble nitrogen doesn't provide for the long-term needs of the plant and creates water pollution.
