Book excerpt: "A good time to be the church is right now," declares Bishop H. George Anderson. Rather than lamenting the lost influence of the church or dreaming of some golden age, Christians can see the spiritual hunger of our time as a special opportunity to speak and act boldly. Solidly grounded in the Bible and Christian history, and keenly aware of contemporary issues, the Lutheran bishop identifies Christian truths that are especially needed in our time. He recalls his own spiritual journey and encourages readers to tell their faith stories. In an engaging question-and- answer format, Anderson helps readers clarify their own beliefs and discover ways to share the Christian faith with others. With questions for reflection and discussion, along with suggested prayers and hymns, this book is a stimulating study guide for congregations, church councils, evangelism committees, and other Christian groups.

Download or read book Forever Prayer written by Jimmie L. Hancock and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forever Prayer is the story of one man's search for understanding the essential nature of prayer. The conclusion is that our thoughts reveal who we really are and what we truly desire--and God is keenly aware all the time of all our thoughts. That makes us forever at prayer because God is always listening in on our thoughts. If we can believe this, and become aware that we are always at prayer, our lives will become more in tune with God's presence and desires as revealed to us in his Word. Forever Prayer will enlighten and renew your thinking about prayer. Have you ever considered your thoughts being known to God? That would mean you are always at prayer because God would always know your desires at all times. It would also make it very important to maintain good thoughts that please God. Also, good behavior would be expected to follow. Of course, you would have to know what pleases God and that would mean having a knowledge of the Bible which contains God's desires for your life.
Book Synopsis The Professionalization of Pastoral Care by : T. Dale Johnson Jr.
Download or read book The Professionalization of Pastoral Care written by T. Dale Johnson Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the organization and structure of the church in America was altered in the early 1900s to meet modern demands, the role of the pastorate became more specialized to adapt to the burdens of the new, "efficient" structure. In 1920, Gaines Dobbins utilized the business efficiency model at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to formulate a distinct ecclesiology. Discontent with traditional methods of instruction in theological education, Dobbins sought to implement theories and methodologies from modern educationalists. He adopted a psychologized educational methodology and utilized the psychology of religion as an empirical measure of the soul, human nature, and human behavior. Use of the social sciences seemed to grant Dobbins, as a practitioner, academic respectability within the realm of theological education. Both the professionalization that resulted from Dobbins's efficiency standards, and a working theory of human nature derived from psychological models, were synthesized into a specialized system of pastoral care. Dobbins followed the new shape of pastoral theology in America, adopting Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as the model for pastoral training. As a result, CPE became an integral part of the curriculum at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for over sixty years, and spread to influence many other SBC entities.

Book Synopsis Shamanic Dimensions of Psychotherapy by : Robin van Löben Sels
Download or read book Shamanic Dimensions of Psychotherapy written by Robin van Löben Sels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shamanic Dimensions of Psychotherapy: Healing through the Symbolic Process, Robin van Löben Sels uniquely and honestly recounts her personal journey toward a shamanic understanding of psychotherapy. Exploring the disruptive breakthrough of visions and dreams that occurred during her analysis, personal life, and psychoanalytic training, van Löben Sels illustrates how the phenomenology of ancient shamanism is still alive and how it is a paradigm for the emergence and maturation of the psyche in people today. This original book delves into van Löben Sels’s personal experience of the shaman, identifying such eruptions as a contemporary version of the archaic shaman’s initiatory call to vocation. The book is split into two parts. It begins by outlining the shamanic personality in history, recognizing this as an individual that has been called out of a collectively sanctioned identity into a creative life, and the unconscious shaman complex they consequently face, especially in psychotherapeutic relationships. Practical as well as theoretical, the second part outlines the shamanic attributes that underline psychotherapeutic relationships - silence, sound, mask, rhythm, gesture, movement, and respiration - and usefully describes how to use them as asanas for consciousness, or vehicles toward psychological awareness. With clinical examples and personal stories throughout, this book’s unique Jungian perspective addresses contemporary expressions of the shaman complex in our current world. Shamanic Dimensions of Psychotherapy: Healing through the Symbolic Process will be essential reading for Jungian analysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training, as well as for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian studies. It will be especially helpful and illuminating to those who have experienced an involuntary plunge into the depths and who seek ways to articulate their experience.
