Book excerpt: Statement of Problem Nursing students experience high levels of stress (Beck, Hackett, Srivastava, McKim, & Rockwell, 1997), have been shown to be at increased risk for physical and psychiatric illnesses (Beck & Srivastava, 1991) and stress has been shown to increase dropout rates (O'Regan, 2005). No prior published studies that focus on the relationship between demographic variables and reported stress levels in nursing students have been published. Sources of Data Data was collected from a convenience sample of all nursing students currently enrolled at California State University San Marcos. Students completed an online survey that included demographic data, the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI) (Jones & Johnston, 1999), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Strahan & Gerbasi, 1972). Conclusions Reached Two independent variables, GPA (p=.001) and Study Time (p=.013) showed statistical significance in affecting the self-reported stress levels as measured by the SNSI.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the self-assessment of stressors, and the reaction to stress in the LPN nursing student. The study was comprised of 43 Licensed Practical Nurse students in the Nursing Department of the Allied Health Division of a community college in southeast United States. Data were collected using the Student-Life Stress Inventory Tool (Gadzella 2001) and a demographic survey. Data was collected within the first two weeks of the three semester program. Results of this study indicated that there were no significant differences in the students' reported level of stressors, and reaction to stress based on level of stress and demographic factors. The reported level of stressors by this small sample size may not be those stressors typically encountered by the academic student on a national level. The degree to which the students in this survey reported their level of stress and their ability to accommodate their reaction to stressors may also account for the variability in the results of this study and the results of previous studies by Dr. Gadzella.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate the relationship between self-reported stress levels and the amount of work outside the home of students enrolled in an associate degree nursing program in Western Minnesota. The Neuman System Model (NSM) was utilized to focus on the holistic person, describe their relationship to stress, response to stressors, and how to restructure the environment. A convenience sample of semester I and semester II associate degree (AD) nursing students (n=37) currently enrolled in a nursing program were surveyed at a community and technical college. The working demographic form was created to collect information about the same population. The student nurse stress index (SNSI) tool was utilized to measure stress. The results of the study indicated that there was a significant relationship between three of the categories (CC, PP, and IW) in self-reported stress levels tool and the number of hours worked outside the home in an AD nursing student. The results also indicated there was some relationship between one of the categories (AL) from the SNSI tool and the number of hours worked outside the home in an AD nursing student.

Commonly the suffering experienced by clinicians is moral in nature, in part a reflection of the increasing complexity of health care, their roles within it, and the expanding range of available interventions that challenge their moral foundations. Moral suffering is the anguish that arises occurs in response to moral adversity that challenges clinicians integrity: the inner harmony that arises when their essential values and commitments are aligned with their choices and actions. The sources and sequelae of moral distress, one type of moral suffering, have been documented among clinicians across specialties. Transforming their suffering will require solutions that expanded individual and system strategies. Moral resilience, the capacity of an individual to restore or sustain integrity in response to moral adversity, offers a path forward. It encompasses capacities aimed at developing self- regulation and self-awareness, buoyancy, moral efficacy, self-stewardship and ultimately personal and relational integrity. Whether it involves gradual or profound radical change clinicians have the potential to transform themselves and their clinical practice in ways that more authentically reflect their character, intentions and values. The burden of healing our healthcare system is not the sole responsibility of individuals. Clinicians and healthcare organizations must work together to transform moral suffering by cultivating the individual capacities for moral resilience and designing a new architecture to support ethical practice. Used worldwide for scalable and sustainable change, the Conscious Full Spectrum approach, offers a method to solve problems to support integrity, shift patterns that undermine moral resilience and ethical practice, and leverage the inner potential of clinicians and leaders to produce meaningful and sustainable results that benefit all.

The factors examined in this study included demographic characteristics such as age, years in practice and employment status. Other factors examined include general health, perceived stress, salary, vacation, scheduled hours, flexibility, benefits and opportunities for advancement. The tool used in this study was a demographic survey combined with a 67-item questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire was adapted from the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 10), The General Health Survey (GHQ 28) and The McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale (MMSS). Forty-five participants took part in this study. Each participant was currently a graduate nursing student. The study revealed that graduate nurses in the Los Angeles metropolitan area were less satisfied overall with diminished perceptions of health and increased stress particularly at 6-10 years of experience. The findings also suggest that work- related stress prevention programs would promote satisfaction attainment among nursing staff and potentially improve organizational outcomes.

Book excerpt: A significant majority of graduate nursing students hold part-time or full-time nursing positions while simultaneously committing to school full-time. The culmination of stressors from a graduate level curriculum, a professional role as a healthcare worker, in addition to personal responsibilities at home renders the graduate nursing student extremely vulnerable to a negative professional quality of life (ProQOL). The unforeseen challenges brought about by the global pandemic widely known as COVID-19 further placed working, graduate nursing students at risk to negative ProQOL. The purpose of this study was to explore ProQOL in graduate nursing students through their experiences with compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO), and secondary traumatic stress (STS) during the global pandemic, and identify the potential risk factors that predispose students to both compassion fatigue (CF) and the consideration to quit one's current job.A total of fifty-three (n = 53) 1st-year, 2nd-year, and post-masters graduate nursing students completed the demographic questionnaire alongside Stamm's (2010) ProQOL scale version 5, and a Chi-square test was utilized to identify associations between specific demographic characteristics to experiences with CS, BO, and STS. Although overall scores for CS, BO, and STS were average, high CS served as a protective factor against development of high BO and STS. The fear of contracting COVID-19 due to lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) was associated with lower CS scores and consideration of quitting one's current job. Lastly, graduate nursing students that considered quitting one's current job was associated with higher BO scores. The results highlight the importance of healthcare and academic institutions in maximizing CS among graduate nursing students. Future research should further examine the prevalence and impact CF, especially STS, in graduate nursing students during a global health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
