Book excerpt: Each of us has at least once in our lifetime come into contact with nurses of all backgrounds, whether in the course of being cared for or while they care for our family and friends. More often than not, we have seen nurses as what they truly are: compassionate professionals who often go above and beyond the call of duty in an unequivocally selfless manner. But not many of us have taken time to ponder over the challenges nurses confront, the experiences they encounter, and the stories that come with these opportunities to change peoples lives and be sometimes changed in the course of doing so. This book, Nursing Stories: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey, chronicles the challenges nurses face, the camaraderie they share, the experiences they have, and their unfaltering desire to make a difference. Many nurses of diverse specialties working across the globe have, in this book, succinctly told their stories, experiences, and challenges, not only to promote nursing as a profession in which one can make a difference, but also as one in which the difference one makes can help shape ones outlook on life. Every new page in this book highlights that while nurses try to change lives, a lot of them end up being changed themselves. Nursing Stories: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey is a compilation of actual life-transforming stories that range from subtly hilarious stories to confronting clinical experiences. Some of the stories are intriguing, challenging, inspiring, scary, or outright inconceivable. Welcome to the world of nursing, welcome to Nursing Stories: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey.

Book excerpt: Stories about nurses are scarce, but stories about nurses who have accomplished extraordinary feats are almost non-existent. This beautifully produced, full-color book breaks that trend with stories about nurses who, in their daily lives, have made outstanding contributions in extraordinary ways in their communities. From around the globe, authors have contributed over 100 stories and images of nurses guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and applaud as you learn of their accomplishments. Through narrative and photography, each story shows how the individual nurse applies her or his talents to improve the quality of life of others. These stories capture the diversity, intensity and heroism of nursing. Collectively, they form a fascinating mosaic describing the fullness of the nursing profession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago singularly honored nurses, our "Angels of Mercy," for a decade (1949-1958). Father Clarence M. Brissette O.S.M., director of the Sorrowful Mother Novena, originated both Chicago's "Nurses Day" and Chicago's Nurse Parade in 1949. The purpose of the parade was twofold: to give the nurses a "day of glory" and to also encourage others to join this undermanned, noble, and caring profession. The first Chicago Nurse Parade (1949) had two floats, four bands, and included many nurses marching in capes. The 10-year anniversary parade (1958) had 4,000 marching uniformed nurses, over 30 bands, and over 100 decorated floats representing nearly all Chicagoland hospitals and schools of nursing. In 1958, over 100,000 spectators lined Jackson Boulevard to honor nurses in what would be the final parade.

Book excerpt: Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft house—a farmer’s stone cottage—on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends. In anecdotes that are by turns funny, sad, moving, and tragic, she recalls them all, the crofters and their laird, the boatmen and tradesmen, young lovers and forbidding churchmen. Against the old-fashioned island culture and the grandeur of mountain and sea unfold indelible stories: a young woman carried through snow for airlift to the hospital; a rescue by boat; the marriage of a gentle giant and the island beauty; a ghostly encounter; the shocking discovery of a woman in chains; the flames of a heather fire at night; an unexploded bomb from World War II; and the joyful, tipsy celebration of a ceilidh. Gaelic fortitude meets a nurse’s compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the process of evolution, human beings have overcome a multitude of challenges and trials. One such recent encounter was with the pandemic COVID-19. The onslaught of a pandemic is not new in history, not so frequent and will also not be the last. However, during this pandemic, while some people perished, many evolved fighting against it and that’s what makes the journey of human species fascinating. This book is a perception of the journey of a variety of demographics through the pandemic and the series of lockdowns initiated to contain it. If on one hand, there was a closure of economic, religious, education and governmental institutions, on the other, there were attempts made to go digital and cope with new realities. While the women and LGBTQ+ community became vulnerable in their homes, the migrant labourers and sailors longed to return to their homes. If addiction to adult films was worrying, the actors in this industry struggled to survive. The small shopkeepers and domestic helpers were left in a lurch. The journey was tough yet extraordinary. As we move towards a new normal, how well prepared are we? Do we have any lessons learnt?

Book excerpt: In spite of a diving accident that has left her paralyzed for more than thirty years, Joni Eareckson Tada has been able to build a life of faith and purpose. The peace she has found as she confronts the painful realities of life as a quadriplegic has made her a hero to many people. In Ordinary People, Extraordinary Faith, Joni lets us know who her heroes are. Inside she tells the stories of people who inspire her with their faith and courage. Although Joni has met many famous "heroes of the faith" through her ministry, the lives she shares here are not the Billy Grahams of the world. They are a mother, a housewife, a nursing home resident, a child. Some are missionaries or pastors; others are bank tellers or data entry clerks. All of these people have touched Joni's life and the lives of others as they found their faith rise to the occasion – to forgive an assailant, to find strength despite the debilitating effects of cerebral palsy, to choose love in the face of racial prejudice, and to discover in the midst of questioning that God Himself is the answer to all questions.

Book excerpt: From the Bestselling Author of Call the Nurse and Nurse, Come You Here!, the Moving Story of Her Young Life and Her Path to Independence through Training to Be a Nurse—"A Must-Read Suggestion for Fans of the BBC's Call the Midwife" (Booklist) Mary MacLeod's mother died in childbirth when Mary was five, an event that marked for the child a "before time"—a lost joyful time—and after. She was shunted from one relative to another while her father coped with his grief. He married again only nine months later, perhaps to have a mother for his child, but her new mum, harsh and withholding of her love, quickly exerted complete control over her thoughts and deeds, with her father oblivious. Her name was changed to her stepmother's choice of "Julia." Yet the pale, thin, quiet little girl didn't know she was unhappy: things were just the way they were. Narrating from the perspective of the child she was but with the understanding and empathy of the nurse and mother she became, the author of Call the Nurse recounts the moving, intimate, indelible story of her young life, growing up in rural England near Bath, relishing the good times when her stepmother was friendly or she helped her father in the garden, experiencing the world war—air raids and blackouts, the war effort, evacuees, German prisoners—winning a scholarship, leaving home to train for three years as a nurse, and gradually finding her way as an independent woman.
