Book excerpt: « Nursing Research: Reading, Using, and Creating Evidence, Fourth Edition focuses on the concept that research is essential as evidence for nursing practice. Written in a conversational tone and using a reader-friendly approach, this text teaches students how to translate research into evidence in a practical way. The text enables students to gain a fundamental understanding of all types of research used for evidence through its emphasis on research methods, use of research evidence in clinical decision-making, and ways to engage in evidence-based practice. The Fourth Edition highlights the importance of translating research findings into evidence as the most critical step for improving patient care. This updated edition contrasts six different models for organizational evidenced-based practice, including Magnet designation requirements, collaboration between researchers and practitioners for knowledge translation, community and home health evidence-based practice, and the challenges of creating an organizational culture that values evidence-based practice. »--

Book excerpt: Results are presented of a study of nursing and nursing education that focused on the need for continued federal support of nursing education, ways to attract nurses to medically underserved areas, and approaches to encourage nurses to stay in the profession. Findings are presented on whether the aggregate supply of generalist nurses will be sufficient to meet future demand, and how changes that could occur in the health care system might affect demand. Attention is also directed to: how the current and future supply of nurses may be influenced by the costs of nursing education and the sources of education financing; and education for generalist positions in nursing. In addition, the supply and demand situation for nurses educationally prepared for advanced professional positions in nursing is examined. The influence of employer policies and practices in utilization of nursing resources on demand and supply is also addressed. Finally, areas in which further data and studies are needed to better monitor nursing supply and demand are identified. In addition to 21 recommendations, appendices include information on Nursing Training Act appropriations, state reports on nursing issues, certificates for specialist registered nurses, projections of registered nurse supply and requirements, and doctoral programs in nursing. Burns and Grove’s The Practice of Nursing Research, 8th Edition provides a solid foundation in the appraisal, synthesis, and generation of research evidence for clinical nursing practice. Not only will you learn how to properly evaluate and use existing research evidence, but you’ll also learn how to participate in research and quality improvement projects. Updated to reflect today’s focus on online research and evidence-based practice, this edition includes clear, step-by-step guidelines to research procedures as well as many examples from current and classic literature. From an expert author team led by Jennifer Gray, this book helps you perform scholarly research for evidence-based practice. Emphasis on evidence-based practice helps you learn to generate research evidence and to appraise and synthesize existing research for application to clinical practice. Emphasis on qualitative research includes phenomenological research, grounded theory research, ethnographic research, exploratory-descriptive research, and historical research. Coverage of quantitative, qualitative, and other research methodologies gives you a solid foundation to conduct, appraise, and apply research evidence to the realities of today’s clinical practice. Rich examples from the nursing literature bring research principles to life. Information on collecting digital data guides you through the use of online research. Clear, comprehensive coverage is organized into five units: 1) Introduction to Nursing Research, 2) The Research Process, 3) Putting It All Together for Evidence-Based Health Care, 4) Analyzing Data, Determining Outcomes, and Disseminating Research, and 5) Proposing and Seeking Funding for Research. NEW Mixed Methods Research chapter and emphasis covers this increasingly popular approach to research. NEW! Expanded emphasis on qualitative research provides more balanced coverage of qualitative and quantitative methods, addressing the qualitative research methodologies that are often the starting point of research projects, particularly in magnet hospitals and DNP programs. ENHANCED emphasis on evidence-based practice addresses this key graduate-level QSEN competency. UPDATED emphasis on the most currently used research methodologies focuses on the methods used in both quantitative research and qualitative research, as well as outcomes research and mixed methods research. Book excerpt: "Research methodology is a dynamic enterprise. Even after writing 10 editions of this book, we have continued to draw new material and inspiration from ground-breaking advances in research methods and in nurse researchers' use of those methods. It is thrilling to share many of those developments in this new edition. We expect that many of the new methodologic and technological enhancements will be translated into powerful evidence for nursing practice. Four years ago, we considered the 10th edition as a watershed edition of a classic textbook, having added two new chapters. We are persuaded, however, that this 11th edition is even better than the previous one. We have retained many features that made this book a classic textbook and resource, including its focus on research as a support for evidence-based nursing, but have introduced important innovations that we hope will help to shape the future of nursing research"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
