Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the effect of longitudinal pressure pulsations or vibrations on the velocity distribution in laminar or turbulent fully developed pipe flow. Specifically, the Reynolds equations are formulated in a noninertial reference frame so that the influence of pressure pulsations, vibrations, or a combined pressure and vibrational oscillation can be obtained from a single solution. For axisymmetric developed flow of a constant property (incompressible) fluid, the radial and circumferential momentum equations can be solved and the axial momentum equation is linearized so that the velocity field can be obtained as the sum of a steady and a time-dependent component. By obtaining a solution for the case where the pressure (or amplitude of vibration) varies sinusoidally, one obtains the solution for disturbances of arbitrary waveform through a Fourier series expansion of the disturbance. Results are presented that show that the velocity field is dependent upon the mean flow Reynolds number, a vibrational Reynolds number, and the amplitude of the forcing function. In general, the fluid response to differing waveforms is similar to that obtained for simple harmonic oscillations with respect to the various parameters explored.

Also the effect of suction on pressure gradient and pressure change is examined experimentally. The frictional characteristics of Irrigro$\sp{\circler,}$ the porous tubing used in this investigation, is studied by means of a comprehensive experimental program that considered different lengths of porous tubing. Three aspects of flow in porous pipes are investigated in this study, (i) a computational study of the effects of suction on the flow characteristics, (ii) an experimental study of the frictional characteristics of the porous tubing with no suction condition and (iii) an experimental study of pressure change along a porous tubing with lateral flow. The numerical study of turbulent pipe flow with wall suction rates ranging from A = 0 to 13 percent showed that in fully developed pipe flow, wall suction results in a more uniform velocity distribution with increased near-wall velocity values and reduced velocities near the centerline. The near-wall component of radial velocity, $\nu,$ increases with increasing distance from the wall in the zone near the pipe wall. The absolute levels of turbulent kinetic energy decrease with increasing suction rate. Wall suction increases the wall shear stress, $\tau\sb{\rm w},$ along the wall of the tube. The increase in $\tau\sb{\rm w}$ is significant even for the smallest suction rate (up to 30 percent) while such an increase is much higher for A = 13 percent (up to 360 percent). Analysis of the experimental friction loss data obtained for small diameter porous tubing in this study confirmed that the Colebrook and White (C-W) equation is a very accurate predictor of the friction factor for porous tubing with small diameter size and Reynolds numbers less than 100,000. These results are in agreement with the results of Aggarwal et al (1972). The value of the relative roughness obtained in this study showed that the porous tubing under study is smoother than most of the tubing used as laterals in the traditional trickle irrigation. Also, the fact that the friction factors agreed with the Colebrook-White law indicates that the physical roughness in the porous tubing under study corresponds very nearly to the equivalent sand roughness with a relative roughness of about e/D = 0.002. A relationship was established as a convenient and accurate head loss prediction equation (within 5% error) by combining a power function with the Darcy-Weisbach equation. The combination equation is correctable for viscosity changes and accurate for the porous pipe tubing under study. A pressure change and a pressure gradient prediction relationship were established in the transition zone of the Moody diagram for high suction rates, assuming a uniform radial flow rate along the suction region. The relationships presented herein are based on a control volume approach analysis and incorporated the data obtained from laboratory studies on the porous tubing under study.

Book excerpt: Measurements with particle image velocimetry were carried out in fully developed turbulent pipe flow at a Reynolds number of 5,277. Data were obtained in a plane through the centerline of the pipe, across the full diameter. Statistical properties of the flow obtained by ensemble averaging of the data along the axial direction were in good agreement with direct numerical simulation. Maps of instantaneous tangential vorticity reveal spatial structures near the pipe wall that resemble coherent flow structures predicted by direct numerical simulation. (Author).

The scope and style employed preserve the nature of its subject: the turbulence phe nomena in gas and liquid flows which are believed to occur at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers. Since at first glance the field of interest is chaotic, time-dependent and three-dimensional, spread over a wide range of scales, sta tistical treatment is convenient rather than a description of fine details which are not of importance in the first place. When coupled to the basic conserva tion laws of fluid flow, such treatment, however, leads to an unclosed system of equations: a consequence termed, in the scientific community, the closure problem. This is the central and still unresolved issue of turbulence which emphasizes its chief peculiarity: our inability to do reliable predictions even on the global flow behavior. The book attempts to cope with this difficult task by introducing promising mathematical tools which permit an insight into the basic mechanisms involved. The prime objective is to shed enough light, but not necessarily the entire truth, on the turbulence closure problem. For many applications it is sufficient to know the direction in which to go and what to do in order to arrive at a fast and practical solution at minimum cost. The book is not written for easy and attractive reading.

The investigated flow regimes and inter-regime transformations include fully laminar and fully turbulent, laminarisation, and turbulentisation. The model auto-selects both the flow regimes and the inter-regime transformations. This book studies both steady and unsteady flows, as well as flows in pipes and ducts of both axially unchanging cross section and axially enlarging cross section.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, the effects of computational domain size and radius ratio on fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer in a concentric annular pipe are investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). To perform DNS, a new parallel computer code based on the pseudo-spectral method was developed using the FORTRAN 90/95 programing languages and the message passing interface (MPI) libraries. In order to study the effects of computational domain size on the turbulence statistics, twelve test cases of different domain sizes are compared. The effects of radius ratio are investigated through a systematic study based on four radius ratios of a concentric pipe. The characteristics of the velocity and temperature fields are examined at two Reynolds number of Re_(D_h ) =8900$ and 17700. The radius ratio affects the interaction of two boundary layers of the concentric annular pipe and has a significant impact on the turbulent flow structures and dynamics. The characteristics of the flow and temperature fields are investigated in both physical and spectral spaces, which include the analyses of the first- and second-order statistical moments, budget balance of the transport equation of Reynolds stresses, two-point correlation coefficients, and premultiplied spectra of velocity, vorticity, and temperature fluctuations. It is observed that the scales and dynamics of turbulence structures vary with the radius ratio as well as the surface curvature of the concave and convex walls. The characteristic length scales of the turbulence structures are identified through a spectral analysis.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both laminar and turbulent flows in strongly curved ducts, channels, and pipes are studied by numerical methods. The study concentrates on the curved square-duct geometry and flow conditions for which detailed measurements have been obtained recently by Taylor, Whitelaw, and Yianneskis. The solution methodology encompasses solution of the compressible ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations at low Mach number using a split linearized block implicit (LBI) scheme, and rapid convergence on the order of 80 noniterative time steps is obtained. The treatment of turbulent flows includes resolution of the viscous sublayer region. A series of solutions for both laminar and turbulent flow and for both two- and three-dimensional geometries of the same curvature are presented. The accuracy of these solutions is explored by mesh refinement and by comparison with experiment. In summary, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement between solution and experiment is obtained. Collectively, this sequence of results serves to clarify the physical structure of these flows and hence how grid selection procedures might be adjusted to improve the numerical accuracy and experimental agreement. For a three-dimensional flow of considerable complexity, the relatively good agreement with experiment obtained for the turbulent flow case despite a coarse grid must be regarded as encouraging.
