In order to extend the frontiers of our knowledge, physicists are especially interested in extreme scenarios. The strongest and thus most interesting source for the study of gravitational waves, a prediction of general relativity, is the merger of two black holes. To understand the generation and evolution of gravitational waves in such a case, extensive efforts have been made. One is the construction of highly sensitive detectors, which are likely to find gravitational wave signals. The other is extensive theoretical and computational efforts developing numerical treatments that simulate merging black holes. A substantial advance in research arose from the remarkable expansion of computing power in recent years. Yet, every attempt remains restricted by the specific requirements of a numerical setup. Based on the 3+1 formulation of Einstein’s equations presented by Arnowitt, Deser and Misner (ADM formalism), this thesis will provide a comprehensive discussion of suitable quantities, the Weyl scalars [psi subscript n], for the analysis of gravitational waves in numerical relativity, their features and their theoretical background. The first part of the thesis focuses on the so-called TIGER, i.e. Test Infrastructure for General Relativity, an innovative Bayesian framework for performing hypothesis tests of modified gravity using ground-based GW data. After developing the framework, Li simulates a variety of General Relativity deviations and demonstrates the ability of the aforementioned TIGER to measure them. The advantages of the method are nicely shown and compared to other, less generic methods. Given the extraordinary implications that would result from any measured deviation from General Relativity, it is extremely important that a rigorous statistical approach for supporting these results would be in place before the first Gravitational Wave detections begin. In developing TIGER, Tjonnie Li shows a large amount of creativity and originality, and his contribution is an important step in the direction of a possible discovery of a deviation (if any) from General Relativity. In another section, Li's thesis deals with cosmology, describing an exploratory study where the possibility of cosmological parameters measurement through gravitational wave compact binary coalescence signals associated with electromagnetic counterparts is evaluated. In particular, the study explores the capabilities of the future Einstein Telescope observatory. Although of very long term-only applicability, this is again a thorough investigation, nicely put in the context of the current and the future observational cosmology.

In the last part, the initial data problem is studied, the choice of spacetime coordinates within the 3+1 framework is discussed and various schemes for the time integration of the 3+1 Einstein equations are reviewed. Book excerpt: The study of black holes and their interactions and the extraction of gravitational waves become of primary importance from both - the astrophysical and theoretical points of view now that the first gravitational detectors have started operating; gravitational waves, while certainly extremely weak, are also extremely pervasive and thus a novel and very promising way of exploring the universe. Space-times containing highly distorted black holes will generally have strong time-dependent gravitational fields and presumably provide the strongest sources of gravitational waves in the universe. This work focuses on two fundamental problems in modern numerical relativity: (1) Creating valid initial data of non-perturbative distorted black hole space-times for numerical evolution, and (2) extracting the radiation quantities in a coordinate independent way, using the Newman-Penrose formalism. I first consider the initial data for such distorted black hole space-times, prescribing them successfully in a simplified situation of superimposed time symmetric Brill waves, and leading the way to more general initial data which corresponds to rotating black holes. To drop the assumption of time symmetric initial hypersurfaces will be subject of future work. Next I move to the numerical evolution and introduce a simple but stable way to perform excision in spherical coordinates. Finally, I extract the gravitational wave signal from the numerical simulations, using the Newman-Penrose formalism, in particular the Weyl scalars. I adopt a particular frame where the Weyl scalars acquire physical meaning, and can be directly associated with the waveform. Moreover, I derive a formula to calculate the energy carried away by the wave. Comparison of the even and odd parity waveforms of our non-perturbation approach with the metric perturbation approaches such as Regge-Wheeler [1], Zerilli [2] and Teukolsky [3] will partly be discussed and partly be subject of future work
