Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method for the numerical solution of the wave equation governing the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a horizontally stratified, inhomogeneous, anisotropic layer is described. The wave equation is a homogeneous set of four linear differential equations of the first order. In the computer calculation, all singularities of the wave equation are removed in practical cases and a proper step-size based on the gradients of the medium properties is programmed automatically. The multiplicative nature of the solutions facilitates the procedure. Modification of solutions from one height to another is expressed in explicit form on the assumption that the propagation tensor varies linearly with height in each step of integration. In the mathematical development, matrix operations are extensively used in order to achieve a general representation. Four independent solutions of the wave equation are derived. During an ordinary integration for an inhomogeneous medium, a degradation occurs inevitably in the degree of linear independence among special solutions. This cause is analyzed. To obtain a complete set of special solutions with good linear independence, a particular device is developed for general applications. This method has been programmed for computer calculation by an IBM 7090. The resultant wave fields and wave polarizations for the independent modes are shown for a model ionosphere. The resultant wave is described as a 'scrambling' of four characteristic waves. The 'scrambling' state is visualized at each height. (Author).

Book excerpt: Abstract: "We introduce a method, constructed such that numerical solutions of the wave equation are well behaved also when the solutions contain discontinuities. The wave equation serves as a model problem for the Euler equations when the solution contains a contact discontinuity. Numerical computations of the wave equation in 1D, the Euler equations in 1D and the wave equation with variable coefficients in 2D are presented."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave propagation in multi (n- )- mode inhomogeneous media, quite generally is described by an n:th order wave equation with variable coefficients, or sometimes, especially in the case of 4-mode systems, by coupled, second order wave equations in total fields. It is shown how the propagation phenomena can be analyzed in terms of first order, coupled mode amplitude equations. These first order equations become especially simple when the system has symmetric, or anti-symmetric properties. Since the methods developed are completely general, they can be applied to a multitude of wave propagation phenomena, involving coupling between waves of very different physical nature. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces parabolic wave equations, their key methods of numerical solution, and applications in seismology and ocean acoustics. The parabolic equation method provides an appealing combination of accuracy and efficiency for many nonseparable wave propagation problems in geophysics. While the parabolic equation method was pioneered in the 1940s by Leontovich and Fock who applied it to radio wave propagation in the atmosphere, it thrived in the 1970s due to its usefulness in seismology and ocean acoustics. The book covers progress made following the parabolic equation’s ascendancy in geophysics. It begins with the necessary preliminaries on the elliptic wave equation and its analysis from which the parabolic wave equation is derived and introduced. Subsequently, the authors demonstrate the use of rational approximation techniques, the Padé solution in particular, to find numerical solutions to the energy-conserving parabolic equation, three-dimensional parabolic equations, and horizontal wave equations. The rest of the book demonstrates applications to seismology, ocean acoustics, and beyond, with coverage of elastic waves, sloping interfaces and boundaries, acousto-gravity waves, and waves in poro-elastic media. Overall, it will be of use to students and researchers in wave propagation, ocean acoustics, geophysical sciences and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a comprehensive mathematical formulation of the three-dimensional ocean acoustic propagation problem by means of functional and operator splitting techniques in conjunction with rational function approximations. It presents various numerical solutions of the model equation such as finite difference, alternating direction and preconditioning. The detailed analysis of the concept of 3D, N x 2D and 2D problems is very useful not only mathematically and physically, but also computationally. The inclusion of a complete detailed listing of proven computer codes which have been in use by a number of universities and research organizations worldwide makes this book a valuable reference source. Advanced knowledge of numerical methods, applied mathematics and ocean acoustics is not required to understand this book. It is oriented toward graduate students and research scientists to use for research and application purposes.

Book excerpt: The long wavelength reflection coefficients for a day and night horizontally stratified model ionosphere are calculated by integrating the governing differential equations. The wave fields inside the ionosphere and the group height are also illustrated. This is useful when the measured reflection or conversion coefficients show unexpected features and a detailed examination of these wave fields may lead to a physical insight of the origin of such features. The compute time is 200 horizontally stratified slabs per second on a CDC 6600. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Dialectric Optical Waveguides, Second Edition focuses on the practical usage of optical waveguides. This book explores the rapid growth of integrated optics, which is devoted to the development of microscopic optical circuits based on thin film technology. Organized into nine chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the properties of dielectric slab waveguides. This book then examines the theory of directional couplers with and without diffraction gratings. Other chapters describe the numerical methods for solving guided mode as well as wave propagation problems. This text discusses as well the beam propagation method and the popular effective refractive index method. The final chapter deals with the significance of nonlinear phenomena. This book is a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of physics and electrical engineering. Practicing engineers and scientists in the fields of integrated optics, optical communications, and fiber sensors will find this book extremely useful.
