Book excerpt: This book was prepared in conjunction with the forthcoming book by the same authors, Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Chemical Engineering Processes. Both books were conceived as links between basic subjects such as mathematics, physics, physical chemistry, and fluid mechanics, and process calculations forming the final stage of chemical engineering education. An understanding of the underlying principles and methods of solution is emphasized, rather than purely computational skills.

Book excerpt: Designed as an undergraduate-level textbook in Chemical Engineering, this student-friendly, thoroughly class-room tested book, now in its second edition, continues to provide an in-depth analysis of chemical engineering thermodynamics. The book has been so organized that it gives comprehensive coverage of basic concepts and applications of the laws of thermodynamics in the initial chapters, while the later chapters focus at length on important areas of study falling under the realm of chemical thermodynamics. The reader is thus introduced to a thorough analysis of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics as well as their applications to practical situations. This is followed by a detailed discussion on relationships among thermodynamic properties and an exhaustive treatment on the thermodynamic properties of solutions. The role of phase equilibrium thermodynamics in design, analysis, and operation of chemical separation methods is also deftly dealt with. Finally, the chemical reaction equilibria are skillfully explained. Besides numerous illustrations, the book contains over 200 worked examples, over 400 exercise problems (all with answers) and several objective-type questions, which enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts and theory discussed. The book will also be a useful text for students pursuing courses in chemical engineering-related branches such as polymer engineering, petroleum engineering, and safety and environmental engineering. New to This Edition • More Example Problems and Exercise Questions in each chapter • Updated section on Vapour–Liquid Equilibrium in Chapter 8 to highlight the significance of equations of state approach • GATE Questions up to 2012 with answers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised, updated, and rewritten where necessary, but keeping the clear writing and organizational style that made previous editions so popular, Elements of Environmental Engineering: Thermodynamics and Kinetics, Third Edition contains new problems and new examples that better illustrate theory. The new edition contains examples with practical flavor such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, nanotechnology, green chemistry, and green engineering. With detailed theoretical discussion and principles illuminated by numerical examples, this book fills the gaps in coverage of the principles and applications of kinetics and thermodynamics in environmental engineering and science. New topics covered include: Green Chemistry and Engineering Biological Processes Life Cycle Analysis Global Climate Change The author discusses the applications of thermodynamics and kinetics and delineates the distribution of pollutants and the interrelationships between them. His demonstration of the theoretical foundations of chemical property estimations gives students an in depth understanding of the limitations of thermodynamics and kinetics as applied to environmental fate and transport modeling and separation processes for waste treatment. His treatment of the material underlines the multidisciplinary nature of environmental engineering. This book is unusual in environmental engineering since it deals exclusively with the applications of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics in environmental processes. The book’s multimedia approach to fate and transport modeling and in pollution control design options provides a science and engineering treatment of environmental problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion involves change in the chemical state of a substance from a fuel-state to a product-state via chemical reaction accompanied by release of heat energy. Design or performance evaluation of equipment also requires knowledge of the RATE of change of state. This rate is governed by the laws of thermodynamics and by the empirical sciences of heat and mass transfer, chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics. Theoretical treatment of combustion requires integrated knowledge of these subjects and strong mathematical and numerical skills. ANALYTIC COMBUSTION is written for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and professionals in mechanical, aeronautical, and chemical engineering. Topics were carefully selected and presented to facilitate learning with emphasis on effective mathematical formulations and solution strategies. The book features over 60 solved numerical problems and analytical derivations and nearly 145 end-of-chapter exercise problems. The presentation is gradual starting from Thermodynamics of Pure and Mixture substances, Chemical Equilibrium, building to a uniquely strong chapter on Application Case-Studies.

Book excerpt: Understanding and modeling the kinetics of chemical reactions is crucial to any research and development effort aimed at process optimization and innovation. This volume of Advances in Chemical Engineering provides four complementary points of view. It reflects state-of-the-art developments as well as views on the way to proceed by reporting on the efforts of a representative, sample of research and development groups. A first contribution by W.H. Green Jr. sets the scene. The author advocates a paradigm shift in chemical kinetics from "postdictive" to predictive models. The contribution from the Politecnico di Milano reports on the tremendous experience accumulated over the years in the field of steam cracking, one of the largest scale production processes of the petrochemical industry. The Russian school of chemical kinetics is represented by a chapter on oxidation of alkanes, this contribution addresses more "philosophical" issues. The last chapter gives an indication of the state-of-the-art in an industrial environment. Provides original reviews Presents leading chemical engineers as authors Reviews state-of-the-art developments

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of theory in science was formulated very brilliantly by Max Planck: Experimenters are the striking force of science. The experiment is a question which science puts to nature. The measurement is the registration of nature’s answer. But before the question is put to nature,it must be formulated. Before the measurement result is used, itmust be explained, i.e., the answer must be understood correctly. These two problems are obligations of the theoreticians. Chemical engineering is an experimental science, but theory permits us to formulate correct experimental conditions and to understand correctly the exp- imental results. The theoretical methods of chemical engineering for modeling and simulation of industrial processes are surveyed in this book. Theoretical chemical engineering solves the problems that spring up from the necessity for a quantitative description of the processes in the chemical industry. They are quite different at the different stages of the quantitative description, i.e., a wide circle of theoretical methods are required for their solutions. Modeling and simulation are a united approach to obtain a quantitative description of the processes and systems in chemical engineering and chemical technology, which is necessary to clarify the process mechanism or for optimal process design, process control, and plant renovation. Modeling is the creation of the mathematical model, i.e., construction of the mathematical description (on the basis of the process mechanism), calculation of the model parameters (using experimental data), and statistical analysis of the model adequacy.
