Book excerpt: The development of Short Takeoff Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft has historically been an empirical- and experience-based technology. In this study, a 3-D turbulent flow CFD code was used to calculate the hot gas environment around an STOVL aircraft operating in ground proximity. Preliminary calculations are reported for a typical STOVL aircraft configuration to identify key features of the flow field, and to demonstrate and assess the capability of current 3-D CFD codes to calculate the temperature of the gases ingested at the engine inlet as a function of flow and geometric conditions. Book excerpt: Short takeoff and landing (STOL) and advanced short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft are being pursued for deployment near the end of this century. These concepts offer unique capabilities not seen in conventional aircraft: for example, shorter takeoff distances and the ability to operate from damaged runways and remote sites. However, special technology is critical to the development of this unique class of aircraft. Some of the real issues that are associated with these concepts are hot gas ingestion and airframe heating while in ground effects. Over the past nine years, NASA Lewis Research Center has been involved in several cooperative programs in the 9- by 15 Foot Low-Speed Wind Tunnel (LSWT) to establish a database for hot gas ingestion and airframe heating. The modifications are presented that were made in the 9- by 15-Foot LSWT, including the evolution of the ground plane, model support system, and tunnel sidewalls; and flow visualization techniques, instrumentation, test procedures, and test results. The 9- by 15-Foot LSWT tests were conducted at full scale exhaust nozzle pressure ratios. The headwind velocities varied from 8 to 120 kn depending on the concept (STOL or STOVL). Typical compressor-face distortions (pressure and temperature), ground plane contours, and model surface temperature profiles are presented. Johns, Albert L. Glenn Research Center RTOP 505-62-71...

It analyzes several fundamental methodology issues in numerical heat transfer and fluid flow and identifies certain areas of active application. The finite-volume approach is presented with the finite-element methods as well as with energy balance analysis. Applications include the latest development in turbulence modeling and current approaches to inverse problems.

Book excerpt: A large-scale VTOL test bed designed around the Ames Lift Engine Pod was used for ground-proximity tests at the Ames Research Center VTOL test facility, under sponsorship of the Naval Air Systems Command. Objectives were to obtain parametric data on gas ingestion and jet effects experienced by jet-powered VTOL configurations. Results showed that ingestion and induced-lift effects are configuration- and time-dependent; for many configurations the degree of ingestion experienced cannot be tolerated in operational aircraft. This contrasts with results of recent small-scale tests. Wing geometry, size, location; engine arrangement, lift/cruise engine location and pitch attitude have strong influences on ingestion tendencies and jet-induced effects. Near-field temperature environment appears to be influenced by engine arrangement and number of operating engines. Rapid inlet temperature rise with a high temperature distortion at the compressor face sometimes resulted in engine stall. Hot gases expelled from the engine subsequent to stall occasionally caused stalling of adjacent engines. Large induced force levels and moments resulted from near-ground operation of many configurations. Positive- and negative-induced lift were measured. Aerodynamic suckdown results with a single jet-fundamental geometry configuration are in agreement with empirical correlation of small-scale tests. Results showed that transient measurements with rapid-response thermocouple and recording equipment are needed for realistic assessment of VTOL environment and inlet temperature rise caused by ingestion. Book excerpt: The problem of hot gas ingestion in V/STOL and STOVL aircraft has motivated a set of experimental studies. Two-, three-, and four-jet configurations in cross flow were studied in ground effect. The results presented here were based on a quantitative, concentration measurement technique know as marker nephelometry. The effects of configuration, velocity ratio (freestream over jet velocity), model height, and inlet suction were investigated. The experiments were conducted in three parts. In the first part, comparisons of low speed two-, three-, and four-jet configurations were made. Measurements were made in the planes beneath the models in ground effect. As the number of jets increased, the vortical structures in the flowfield were found to move further upstream due to the increased total momentum. In the second part of the experiments, measurements were made at the inlet entry plane of the low speed two- and three-jet configurations in ground effect. The results indicated that ingestion occurred intermittently, especially in the upper portions of the inlets. The highest levels of concentrations were measured at a model height of two jet diameters. As the model height increased, the concentration levels decreased. Finally, a high speed, two-jet configuration without inlet suction was studied. The flowfield structures were generally found to move further downstream as the jet velocity increased at a constant velocity ratio. Holdeman, James D. (Technical Monitor) and Vukits, Thomas J.
