No desenvolvimento desta ferramenta foram utilizados métodos de estabilização na solução da equação de transporte e o método dos gradientes conjugados. Os métodos de estabilização buscam superar as limitações impostas pelo número de Peclet. O método dos Gradientes Conjugados, por sua vez, tem como objetivomelhorar a eficiência da solução do sistema de equações decorrente da utilização do método dos elementos finitos na solução do problema de transporte. Desenvolveu-se um modelo de reação química que fosse capaz de lidar com compostos que possuem propriedades de transporte diferentes. O desenvolvimento deste modelo levou à idealização de uma metodologia que abrange outros modelos químicos de uma forma única. Para descrever essa metodologia foi utilizado o paradigma de Orientação a Objetos que deu origem a uma hierarquia de classes capaz de suportar o desenvolvimento de modelos químicos das mais variadas formas. Por fim utilizou-se a ferramenta desenvolvida para avaliar alguns problemas decorrentes da contaminação por HCH da Cidade dos Meninos no município de Duque de Caxias, estado de Rio de Janeiro, e a avaliação da técnica de barreiras reativas como alternativa de remediação de águas subterrâneas contaminadas.

The development of better numerical simulation techniques in combination with the enormous expansion of computer tools, have enabled numerical simulation of transport phenomena (mass of phases and components, energy etc. ) in porous domains of interest. Before any practical application of the results of such simulations can be used, it is essential that the simulation models have been proven to be valid. In order to establish the greatest possible coherence between the models and the physical reality, frequent interaction between numericians, mathematicians and the previously quoted researchers, is necessary. Once this coherence is established, the numerical simulations could be used to predict various phenomena such as water management, propagation of pollutants etc. These simulations could be, in many cases, the only financially acceptable tool to carry out an investigation. Current studies within various fields of applications include not only physical comprehension aspects of flow and energy or solute transport in saturated or unsaturated media but also numerical aspects in deriving strong complex equations. Among the various fields of applications generally two types of problems can be observed. Those associated with the pollution of the environment and those linked to water management. The former are essentially a problem in industrialized countries, the latter are a major source of concern in North-Africa.

The papers appear in alphabetical order (on the basis of the first author). A brief introduction to each paper is given below. Allen and Curran consider a variety of questions related to the simulation of ground water contamination. Accurate water velocities are essential for acceptable results, and the authors apply mixed finite elements to the pressure equation to obtain these ve locities. Since fine grids are required to resolve heterogenei ties, standard iterative procedures are too slow for practical simulation; the authors introduce a parallelizable, multigrid-based it.erative scheme for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed method. Contaminant transport is approximated through a finite element collocation procedure, and an alternating-direction, modified method of characteristics technique is employed to time-step the simulation. Computational experiments carried out on an nCube 2 computer.

Book excerpt: Reactive Transport Models (RTMs) provide quantitative tools to analyze the interaction between transport and biogeochemical processes in subsurface environments such as aquatic sediments and groundwater flow. A tremendous amount of research has shown the role and impact of scaling behavior of the reactive systems which stems from geologic heterogeneity. Depending on the kinetics of the reactions, different types of formulations have been proposed to describe reactions in RTMs. We introduce a novel quantitative criteria on the range of validity of local equilibrium assumption (LEA) in aquatic sediments with irreversible heterogeneous sorption reactions. Then we present a one-dimensional (1-D) early diagenetic module, MATSEDLAB, developed in MATLAB. The module provides templates for representing the reaction network, boundary conditions and transport regime, which the user can modify to fit the particular early diagenetic model configuration of interest. We describe the theoretical background of the model and introduce the MATLAB pdepe solver, followed by calibration and validation of the model by a number of theoretical and empirical applications. Finally, we introduce a new pore-scale model using lattice Boltzmann (LB) approach. It uses an iterative scheme for the chemical transport-reaction part and recent advances in the development of optimal advection-diffusion solvers within the lattice Boltzmann method framework. We present results for the dissolution and precipitation of a porous medium under different dynamical conditions, varying reaction rates and the ratio of advective to diffusive transport (Pe, Peclet number) for linear reactions. The final set of calculations considers sorption reactions on a heterogeneous porous medium. We use our model to investigate the effect of heterogeneity on the pore-scale distribution of sorption sites and the competition between three different sorption reactions.

Subsurface flow models still need considerable development. For example, nonequilibrium effects, entrapped air, anomalous dispersion and hysteresis effects can still not be adequately described. Moreover, parameters of the models are diffcult to access and often uncertain. Computational issues in subsurface flows include the treatment of strong heterogeneities and anisotropies in the models, the effcient solution of transport-reaction problems with many species, treatment of multiphase-multicomponent flows and the coupling of subsurface flow models to surface flow models given by shallow water or Stokes equations. With respect to energy and the environment, in particular the modelling and simulation of radioactive waste management and sequestration of CO2 underground have gained high interest in the community in recent years.
