Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is an introduction to algebra via examples. The book moves from properties of integers, through other examples, to the beginnings of group theory. Applications to public key codes and to error correcting codes are emphasised. These applications, together with sections on logic and finite state machines, make the text suitable for students of computer science as well as mathematics students. Attention is paid to historical development of the mathematical ideas. This second edition contains new material on mathematical reasoning skills and a new chapter on polynomials has been added. The book was developed from first-level courses taught in the UK and USA. These courses proved successful in developing not only a theoretical understanding but also algorithmic skills. This book can be used at a wide range of levels: it is suitable for first- or second-level university students, and could be used as enrichment material for upper-level school students.

Book excerpt: Following the same successful approach as Dr. Burn's previous book on number theory, this text consists of a carefully constructed sequence of questions that will enable the reader, through participation, to study all the group theory covered by a conventional first university course. An introduction to vector spaces, leading to the study of linear groups, and an introduction to complex numbers, leading to the study of Möbius transformations and stereographic projection, are also included. Quaternions and their relationships to 3-dimensional isometries are covered, and the climax of the book is a study of the crystallographic groups, with a complete analysis of these groups in two dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to abstract algebra that eases student anxieties by building on fundamentals. Introduction to Abstract Algebra presents a breakthrough approach to teaching one of math's most intimidating concepts. Avoiding the pitfalls common in the standard textbooks, Benjamin Fine, Anthony M. Gaglione, and Gerhard Rosenberger set a pace that allows beginner-level students to follow the progression from familiar topics such as rings, numbers, and groups to more difficult concepts. Classroom tested and revised until students achieved consistent, positive results, this textbook is designed to keep students focused as they learn complex topics. Fine, Gaglione, and Rosenberger's clear explanations prevent students from getting lost as they move deeper and deeper into areas such as abelian groups, fields, and Galois theory. This textbook will help bring about the day when abstract algebra no longer creates intense anxiety but instead challenges students to fully grasp the meaning and power of the approach. Topics covered include: • Rings • Integral domains • The fundamental theorem of arithmetic • Fields • Groups • Lagrange's theorem • Isomorphism theorems for groups • Fundamental theorem of finite abelian groups • The simplicity of An for n5 • Sylow theorems • The Jordan-Hölder theorem • Ring isomorphism theorems • Euclidean domains • Principal ideal domains • The fundamental theorem of algebra • Vector spaces • Algebras • Field extensions: algebraic and transcendental • The fundamental theorem of Galois theory • The insolvability of the quintic

It therefore avoids local methods and presents proofs in a way that highlights the important parts of the arguments. Readers are assumed to be able to fill in the details, which in many places are left as exercises.

Book excerpt: In science, industry, public administration and documentation centers large amounts of data and information are collected which must be analyzed, ordered, visualized, classified and stored efficiently in order to be useful for practical applications. This volume contains 50 selected theoretical and applied papers presenting a wealth of new and innovative ideas, methods, models and systems which can be used for this purpose. It combines papers and strategies from two main streams of research in an interdisciplinary, dynamic and exciting way: On the one hand, mathematical and statistical methods are described which allow a quantitative analysis of data, provide strategies for classifying objects or making exploratory searches for interesting structures, and give ways to make comprehensive graphical displays of large arrays of data. On the other hand, papers related to information sciences, informatics and data bank systems provide powerful tools for representing, modelling, storing and retrieving facts, data and knowledge characterized by qualitative descriptors, semantic relations, or linguistic concepts. The integration of both fields and a special part on applied problems from biology, medicine, archeology, industry and administration assure that this volume will be informative and useful for theory and practice.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The author of The Talent Code unlocks the secrets of highly successful groups and provides tomorrow’s leaders with the tools to build a cohesive, motivated culture. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BLOOMBERG AND LIBRARY JOURNAL Where does great culture come from? How do you build and sustain it in your group, or strengthen a culture that needs fixing? In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle goes inside some of the world’s most successful organizations—including the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six, IDEO, and the San Antonio Spurs—and reveals what makes them tick. He demystifies the culture-building process by identifying three key skills that generate cohesion and cooperation, and explains how diverse groups learn to function with a single mind. Drawing on examples that range from Internet retailer Zappos to the comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade to a daring gang of jewel thieves, Coyle offers specific strategies that trigger learning, spark collaboration, build trust, and drive positive change. Coyle unearths helpful stories of failure that illustrate what not to do, troubleshoots common pitfalls, and shares advice about reforming a toxic culture. Combining leading-edge science, on-the-ground insights from world-class leaders, and practical ideas for action, The Culture Code offers a roadmap for creating an environment where innovation flourishes, problems get solved, and expectations are exceeded. Culture is not something you are—it’s something you do. The Culture Code puts the power in your hands. No matter the size of your group or your goal, this book can teach you the principles of cultural chemistry that transform individuals into teams that can accomplish amazing things together. Praise for The Culture Code “I’ve been waiting years for someone to write this book—I’ve built it up in my mind into something extraordinary. But it is even better than I imagined. Daniel Coyle has produced a truly brilliant, mesmerizing read that demystifies the magic of great groups. It blows all other books on culture right out of the water.”—Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Option B, Originals, and Give and Take “If you want to understand how successful groups work—the signals they transmit, the language they speak, the cues that foster creativity—you won’t find a more essential guide than The Culture Code.”—Charles Duhigg, New York Times bestselling author of The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better

Book excerpt: The theories in this book are original. To achieve the mathematicization and theorization of life sciences, this book proposes a set of effective mathematical theories, "P-number". P-numbers are composed of codes, which also correspond to P-numbers, that is, a P-number is generated by the P-numbers corresponding to its codes. By studying the "P-number", we can find the mathematical laws of the mutual generating between P-numbers. After rigorous mathematical argumentation, 33 mathematical theorems and 27 mathematical corollaries are proposed in this book, forming a theoretical system. These mathematical theories can be used to study the synthesis and control relationships between various living substances in cells. The regularity of these relationships will be clearer if these relationships are expressed in a mathematical way. These mathematical theories can also be used to study the relationship between cells, and even the laws of the entire life body. Some theorems and corollaries can express some biological meanings after being interpreted, which also shows that some biological viewpoints can be directly proved through mathematical methods. In this book, the distribution laws of living substances are also explored. Some applications of these theories are also introduced, such as deriving the thinking law of brain and exploring autoimmune diseases.
