Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novels such as One Hundred Years of Solitude have awakened English-language readers to the existence of Colombian literature in recent years, but Colombia has a well-established literary tradition that far predates the Latin American "boom." In this pathfinding study, Raymond Leslie Williams provides an overview of seventeen major authors and more than one hundred works spanning the years 1844 to 1987. After an introductory discussion of Colombian regionalism and novelistic development, Williams considers the novels produced in Colombia's four semi-autonomous regions. The Interior Highland Region is represented by novels ranging from Eugenio Díaz' Manuela to Eduardo Caballero Calderón's El buen salvaje. The Costa Region is represented by Juan José Nieto's Ingermina to Alvaro Cepeda Samudio's La casa grande and Gabriel García Márquez' Cien años de soledad; the Greater Antioquian Region by Tomás Carrasquilla's Frutos de mi tierra to Manuel Mejía Vallejo's El día señalado; and the Greater Cauca Region by Jorge Isaacs' Maria to Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazábal's El bazar de los idiotas. A discussion of the modern and postmodern novel concludes the study, with special consideration given to the works of García Márquez and Moreno-Durán. Written in a style accessible to a wide audience, The Colombian Novel will be a foundational work for all students of Colombian culture and Latin American literature.

Book excerpt: Holy Terrors presents exemplary original work by fourteen of Latin America’s foremost contemporary women theatre and performance artists. Many of the pieces—including one-act plays, manifestos, and lyrics—appear in English for the first time. From Griselda Gambaro, Argentina's most widely recognized playwright, to such renowned performers as Brazil's Denise Stoklos and Mexico’s Jesusa Rodríguez, these women are involved in some of Latin America's most important aesthetic and political movements. Of varied racial and ethnic backgrounds, they come from across Latin America—Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Peru, and Cuba. This volume is generously illustrated with over seventy images. A number of the performance pieces are complemented by essays providing context and analysis. The performance pieces in Holy Terrors are powerful testimonies to the artists' political and personal struggles. These women confront patriarchy, racism, and repressive government regimes and challenge brutality and corruption through a variety of artistic genres. Several have formed theatre collectives—among them FOMMA (a Mayan women’s theatre company in Chiapas) and El Teatro de la máscara in Colombia. Some draw from cabaret and ‘frivolous’ theatre traditions to create intense and humorous performances that challenge church and state. Engaging in self-mutilation and abandoning traditional dress, others use their bodies as the platforms on which to stage their defiant critiques of injustice. Holy Terrors is a unique English-language presentation of some of Latin America's fiercest, most provocative art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles three decades of social and political disintegration in a nation marked by violence, paradox, and hyperbole, a country both blessed and cursed by its wealth of natural resources, its culture, and its strategic location in the western hemisphere. The plays (Soldiers [C. J. Reyes et al.]; Old Baldy [Jairo Nino]; Lucky Strike [Santiago Garcia]; Roadhouse [Teatro La Candelaria]; Pilot Project [Enrique Buenaventura]; Femina Ludens [Nohora Ayala et al.]; and The Orgy [Enrique Buenaventura]) reveal the historical, economic, and social roots of Colombia's tragic circumstances. They are vehicles of critical analysis for making sense of both the causes and the consequences of the violence, as they examine the role of the army, the roots of the drug wars, the situation of women and victims of conflict, and the poisoning of a common ethos. The translations and introductory notes make the works and their subjects equally accessible for staging in the theater and for readings and discussion by groups interested in Latin American Studies. Judith A. Weiss is Professor of Hispanic Studies at Mount Allison University in Canada.

Book excerpt: The Novel in the Americas contains thirteen provocative and timely essays by leading writers and scholars of the Americas. These essays touch deeply on issues regarding the role of art and critical thought in modern, or postmodern cultures. All of the writers cross and question boundaries - geographic, linguistic, and disciplinary - in their reflections on where we are today, where we have been, and where we can possibly go at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Included are works by Carlos Fuentes, Maxine Hong Kingston, William H. Gass, Larry McCaffrey, and others. "Every writer names the world. But the Latin American writer has been possessed by the urgency to discover", states Carlos Fuentes in the opening lines of this volume. Fuentes and a host of other distinguished intellectuals have been possessed by this urgency to discover, and the equally "possessed" Critical Studies of the Americas Committee of the University of Colorado at Boulder has spent four years organizing an inter-American dialog on the novel and the cultures of the Americas. This book presents a selection of some of the most fascinating moments of this multicultural exchange. The Novel in the Americas is the first volume in a new series from The Critical Studies of the Americas Committee. Each volume will provide interdisciplinary views on the Americas, North and South, as seen by major scholars from throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Canada.

Book excerpt: superb and indispensable. . . . this guide should serve to introduce a rich lode to scholarly miners of the Latin American literary tradition. Highly recommended. Choice Containing contributions by more than fifty scholars, this volume, the second of Diane Marting's edited works on the women of the literature of Spanish America, consists of analytical and biographical studies of fifty of the most important women writers of Latin America from the seventeenth century to the present. The writers covered in the individual essays represent most Spanish-speaking American nations and a variety of literary genres. Each essay provides biographical and career information, discusses the major themes in the body of work, and surveys criticism, ending with a detailed bibliography of works by the writer, works available in translation if applicable, and works about the writer. The editor's tripartite introduction freely associates themes and images with/about/for the works of Spanish American women writers; explains the history and process of the collaborative effort that this volume represents; and traces some feminist concerns that recur in the essays, providing commentary, analysis, suggestions for further research, and hypotheses to be tested. Two general essays complete the volume. The first examines the oral testimony of contemporary Indian women outside of the literary tradition, women whose words have been recorded by others. The other surveys Latina writers in the United States, an area not otherwise encompassed in the scope of this volume. Appendixes classify the writers in the main body of the work by birth date, country, and genre. Also included is a bibliography of reference works and general criticism on the Latin American woman writer, and title and subject indexes. This book addresses the needs of students, translators, and general readers, as well as scholars, by providing a general reference work in the area of Spanish American literature. As such, it belongs in the reference collections of all libraries serving scholars and students of Latin American and women's studies and literature.
