Book excerpt: Explores the body of nude photography being made by a large group of young artists from all over the world. The collection examines the new moods and outlooks in photography engendered by the heady era that witnessed the explosion of the snapshot aesthetic, the birth of digital photos and the proliferation of online outlets for sharing and exhibiting art. As these changes shaped the means of photography, the relaxing of social mores changed the ends. The young artists of today are more open in their portrayal of sexuality in these intimate and beautiful nudes.
Book Synopsis Veils, Nudity, and Tattoos by : Thorsten Botz-Bornstein
Download or read book Veils, Nudity, and Tattoos written by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight, tattoos, nudity, and veils do not seem to have much in common except for the fact that all three have become more frequent, more visible, and more dominant in connection with aesthetic presentations of women over the past thirty years. No longer restricted to biker and sailor culture, tattoos have been sanctioned by the mainstream of liberal societies. Nudity has become more visible than ever on European beaches or on the internet. The increased use of the veil by women in Muslim and non-Muslim countries has developed in parallel with the aforementioned phenomena and is just as striking. Through the means of conceptual analysis, Veils, Nudity, and Tattoos: The New Feminine Aesthetics reveals that these three phenomena can be both private and public, humiliating and empowering, and backward and progressive. This unorthodox approach is traced by the three’s similar social and psychological patterns, and by doing so, Veils, Nudity, and Tattoos hopes to sketch the image of a woman who is not only sexually emancipated and confident, but also more and more aware of her cultural heritage.
Book Synopsis The Naked Nude by : Frances Borzello
Download or read book The Naked Nude written by Frances Borzello and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clarks classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with todays depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time. Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters take a thematic approach, focusing in turn on Body art and Performance art, the new perspectives of women artists, the nude in painting, portraiture and sculpture and in its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone. The final chapter illustrates radical developments in art and culture over the last decade, focusing in particular on artworks by women, trans artists and artists of colour. Borzello links these works to their art-historical and political predecessors, demonstrating the continually unending capacity of the nude to disrupt traditional hierarchies and gender categories in life and art.
Book Synopsis The Philosopher's New Clothes by : Nickolas Pappas
Download or read book The Philosopher's New Clothes written by Nickolas Pappas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach to the question, "Is the philosopher to be seen as universal human being or as eccentric?". Through a reading of the Theaetetus, Pappas first considers how we identify philosophers – how do they appear, in particular how do they dress? The book moves to modern philosophical treatments of fashion, and of "anti-fashion". He argues that aspects of the fashion/anti-fashion debate apply to antiquity, indeed that nudity at the gymnasia was an anti-fashion. Thus anti-fashion provides a way of viewing ancient philosophy’s orientation toward a social world in which, for all its true existence elsewhere, philosophy also has to live.

Drawing on the expertise of a wide range of scholars, this current and comprehensive reference helps readers understand the persecution of members of particular faiths as well as violence committed by members of those faiths. In doing so, it promotes a greater understanding of the role of religion in global politics, domestic and international terrorism, and religious bigotry. Download or read book The Satisfied Soul written by John Piper and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “May these meditations become in your life the living embodiment of God’s Word and penetrate to the deep places of your soul. God has a good work to do there.” –John Piper ONLY GOD CAN SATISFY YOUR SOUL. Every day, the world takes another step away from God’s truth and into greater moral and spiritual relativism. If your view of life is fed by a steady diet of television news and popular opinion, you’ll find yourself starved, parched, and confused. But there is a way for your soul to be satisfied and at peace during these turbulent times. The answer is to turn those hungers, questions, and desires towards God. These meditations offer a daily serving of God’s Word along with practical insights from beloved pastor and author John Piper. Each reading reorients you to the eternal rather than the popular. In a world where ephemeral feelings are valued more than firm facts and eternal joys, each selection will awaken you to the truth of who God is—and who you are. These 120 devotional readings celebrate God’s sovereignty in every aspect of our world, from how to feed our soul, the danger of hero worship, and loving our enemies, to suffering, having a passion for purity, and ways we can be a refuge for our children. This collection offers a daily feast of truth and wisdom that places God right where He belongs—at the center of our lives. These meditations originally appeared in John Piper’s Pierced by the Word, Life as a Vapor, and A Godward Heart. YOU ARE INVITED TO ENJOY THE RAREST OF TREASURES… The world tries to distract our minds. Deaden our hearts. Water down our beliefs. If there are no absolutes, then we can pursue whatever tickles our fancy. We are the captain of our destiny. But, sadly, the result is that we remain hopelessly adrift in a constantly changing sea of confusion. There is a better answer: Rather than numb our soul, we can fully satisfy it. Instead of letting the world squeeze us into its mold, we can be molded into sons and daughters of God. The solution is to feast on God’s Word and drink deep from His river of life. These daily meditations invite us into this central promise about God: You are good and do good; Teach me your statutes. –Psalm 119:68 Discover the supremacy of God in every area of your life...and as the only source of a truly satisfied soul.
