Download or read book Biochemistry of the Glycosidic Linkage an Integrated View written by Romano Piras and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of the Glycosidic Linkage: An Integrated View is a collection of papers presented at The Pan-American Association of Biochemical Societies Symposium, held in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina on November 8-11, 1971. This symposium is organized as a tribute to Luis F. Leloir and his contributions in the field glycosidic linkage. This book is divided into six sessions encompassing 57 chapters. The opening session discusses the role of biochemical mechanisms in the glycosidic linkage formation. The following sessions examine the metabolic functions of some disaccharides, such as trehalose, sucrose, glucose, and starch. These sessions also look into the biosynthesis, function, and properties of carbohydrates containing polymers. The discussion then shifts to the control of enzyme biosynthesis involved in the glycosidic linkage metabolism, with particular emphasis on alpha-amylase, lactose synthetase, phosphorylase, and neuraminidase enzymes. Another session is devoted to the regulatory mechanisms and control of glycogen metabolism. The concluding session covers the genetic analysis and biochemical characterization of the enzymes involved in the glycosidic linkage metabolism. Biochemists and carbohydrate researchers will find this text invaluable.

Book Synopsis Discoveries In Plant Biology (Volume Iii) by : Shain-dow Kung
Download or read book Discoveries In Plant Biology (Volume Iii) written by Shain-dow Kung and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-06-12 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific progress hinges on continual discovery and the extension of previous discoveries. The important series of volumes Discoveries in Plant Biology is specially compiled to provide a microcosmic atlas of the landmark discoveries that span the breadth of plant biology. Written by renowned plant biologists, the papers describe how classic discoveries were made and how they have served as the basis for subsequent breakthroughs. The 24 chapters in this third volume describe discoveries which contribute to the foundations of modern plant biology. The contributors, many of whom personally lit the way, bring readers back in time as if on a journey to retrace the paths and rethink the ideas they followed. These guided tours on how to decipher the natural laws will lead to an appreciation of the development of each field from simple concepts to an advanced multidisciplinary field of today. This volume will be of special interest to botanists, biochemists, plant physiologists and geneticists, and of general interest to those who are still fascinated by how discoveries are made.

Book Synopsis Plant Carbohydrates I by : F.A. Loewus
Download or read book Plant Carbohydrates I written by F.A. Loewus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential features of constitution, configuration, and conformation in carbo hydrate chemistry, so well established in the . first half of this century, had yet to be exploited by those concerned with biochemical and physiological processes in plants when the original Encyclopedia appeared. Two outstanding developments, discovery of sugar nucleotides and the advent of chromatography, brought together the insight and a means of probing complexities inherent in plant carbohydrates. These advances, combined with a modern knowledge of enzymes and cellular metabolism, have provided new horizons of investigation for the student of plant physiology. This volume and its companion (Vol. 13B) present a comprehensive assess ment of the current viewpoint in plant carbohydrates with emphasis on those aspects which impinge on physiological processes of growth and development. To accommodate the extensive amount of information to be presented, subject matter has been divided, somewhat arbitrarily, into intracellular and extracellular carbohydrates, with the latter defined as carbohydrates occurring in space out side the plasma membrane (plasmalemma). This classification is not exclusive; rather it is intended to lend a degree of flexibility to the way in which subject matter is arranged between volumes. The first section of this volume addresses the occurrence, metabolism, and function of monomeric and higher saccharides of fungi, algae, and higher plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seaweed Sustainability: Food and Non-Food Applications is the only evidence-based resource that offers an abundance of information on the applications of seaweed as a solution to meet an increasing global demand for sustainable food source. The book uncovers seaweed potential and describes the various sources of seaweed, the role of seaweeds as a sustainable source for human food and animal feeds, and the role of seaweed farming for sustainability. In addition to harvesting and processing information, the book discusses the benefits of seaweed in human nutrition and its nutraceutical properties. Offers different perspectives by presenting examples of commercial utilization of wild-harvested or cultivated algae, marine and freshwater seaweeds Discusses seasonal and cultivar variations in seaweeds for a better understanding of their implications in commercial applications Includes a wide range of micro and macro algae for food and feed production and provides perspectives on seaweed as a potential energy source
